Maybe this is the wrong platform to pose this question given the average tumblr user but

Is it just me or did our generation (those of is who are currently 20-30 ish) just not get the opportunity to be young in the 'standard' sense?

Like, everyone I talk to who's over 40 has all their wild stories about their teens and 20s, being young and dumb, and then I talk to my friends and coworkers and classmates, and we just... dont.

My mom tells stories of skipping school to sneak across the border and spend the day at a bar in Mexico. I was threatened with not being allowed to graduate because of senior ditch day. One of my friends had to go to his first hour class on senior ditch day because the teacher, who almost exclusively taught seniors, arranged a huge exam that day with no available makeup days, specifically to punish kids who took part in ditch day. Our wild and crazy ditch day was playing mini golf and then stopping for ice cream on our way back to one of our friends' houses to play cards against humanity.

Don't get me wrong, we had fun. But all of that, threats of not graduating, threats of failing classes over a single test, over some mini golf and ice cream?

Throughout high school and early in college, my friend group got kicked out of malls, stores, and even a parking lot just for being there wrong. Not being loud of disruptive. Not causing problems. Just being there too long, or without buying anything.

My mom graduated high school, after repeating her senior year, without a single grade above a D, and was offered a full ride scholarship to a state university to play on their women's football team. I had a 3.8 GPA, multiple extracurriculars, a summer job, and over 100 hours of volunteer work, and barely got into that same university, and then couldn't afford to go there anyway.

We've made getting into college so important and yet so difficult that kids are sacrificing their childhoods for it.

Then they become adults and it doesn't go away. Your employer/ potential employers are searching your social media and internet presence so you'd better hope no one has ever posted a picture of you at a party, or with alcohol, or wearing revealing clothes, or whatever else they've deemed unprofessional. And if you want to go out it's a 10 dollar cover and drinks are at least 8 dollars, and you need to tip if there's any kind of live entertainment, who can afford to do all that regularly?

My physical therapist, when I was 18, told me about his 21st birthday, how the last thing he remembers is people taking body shots off him. I spent my 21st birthday alone, was in bed by 10pm because I had to be at work the next morning. My boss had already told me that they knew it was my 21st, and if I called out, she'd write me up for improper use of sick leave because you're not allowed to use sick leave for a hangover. I don't know anyone whose 21st birthday was a big deal. No one went out and partied for it.

I dont really know where I'm going with all of this. I guess I just don't understand the point of it all. We spend our youth working hard to provide a future that we still can't afford. We have to be responsible and professional as teenagers. And we get nothing out of it. We can't afford life or friends or fun. At least our parents got to have fun being young and dumb, we just got groomed on kik.

So I'm not the only one noticing this. I wish I had an answer or at least something to say about it. But I dont. I'm just tired.

“Oh boo hoo you shouldn’t ask your friends for favors we’re all adults”

I just spent three hours pulling up carpet and staples for a friend’s home renovation and we all did nothing but chat and joke and have wonderful conversation the whole time.

Helping somebody move or renovate or giving them a ride to the airport is functionally the same as going mini-golfing or playing a board game: it’s an activity that you do that is made more fun by having good company, and which provides something to talk about when the conversation lulls.

We lost the fucking plot when we started doing "pro vs anti" ship discourse i am SO serious when i say that its literally not that deep and treating it like it is will give you brain rot beyond your comprehension

"Youre in fandom? Are you pro or anti ship ://" i have a full time job and pay taxes in tangible real life bestie

Do you think i give any hint of a shit that some teenager is writing "problematic fiction" on ao3 when inflation is a real thing and passengers tell me to kill myself 7 times a day because i took their shampoo away after they were told no less than 20 times that anything over 100ml cant fly. Do you think i care that tumblr users are doxing each other over fictional character opinions when rent prices are tag teaming me with utilities and car prices and the existential enui of being a trans guy in alberta. Do you think i care. Do you think any of this actually matters. Get real problems i am SERIOUS

I just don't understand. Do they not know that the people who built AO3 nearly 20 years ago were 30 then? I used to be annoyed by this kind of take but now I'm just baffled.

I was going to quarrel with the '20 years ago' but then I remembered that 2009 was 15 years ago 😵‍💫

Also personally I enjoy stories written by people who lived life

I think that it's important to acknowledge that yes these young people are aware that it's actually 30+ year old (mostly) women running the infrastructure of the communities that they enjoy and that they see no contradiction in criticising "older" women for being members of these communities. They expect adult women to hold the same role in wider society as their mothers and teachers and other caregivers do, doing all the work and not being involved in any of the actual fun. Adult women are not people to them, we are servants.

Obviously not all young people hold this view, but this anon almost certainly does, although I doubt that they even realise that they think this way.

Literally thousands of artists, engineers and scientists over the years: Look at all of these awesome tools we made to help artists make more art more quickly and more easily! Now art is much more accessible to everyone!

Art snobs: If you use anything more than a pencil and ink and these specific paints and brushes you’re cheating and not a real artist. Especially if you draw digitally. That’s double cheating.

Artists, engineers and scientists:

I was always told in math class that I wouldn't be able to carry a calculator with me everywhere I went.

I'm writing this from my smartphone.

Fuck all my math teachers from 2000-2010 who said this

You know what I always remember?

That post where someone said that the most broken thing ab the current education system is how we are conditioned to work alone and never look for help. This person was telling how they held a seminar for people in a company and there was a task like, to test what hey remembered, and everyone sat in silence and alone until this person was like “uh... you guys realize you can ask for help and consult the material right?”

And like, it’s so dumb. When you’re in a work place, you can do these things. You can (and sometimes must) work with others. You can refer back to manuals and materials, you don’t have to memorize everything and work by yourself.

The education system is dumb as fuck.

some pretty sick things about trade school were that all classroom tests were open note, and we were told that they’re all open note because in the ~real world~ you’re expected to actually look things up instead of just assuming you know them, because it’s always the guy who’s like “aw who needs the actual specs and rules, I remember it all” who fucks something up and gets people hurt

also certified welding inspectors are literally required to do everything open-book; their certification test is open book (and less than ten percent of people ever pass it on the first time!) because you are EXPECTED to look things up, you’re EXPECTED to know how to reference things, they consider it actively irresponsible to assume a person can know and remember the entirety of structural welding and engineering code and if you don’t use the book you’re actually in massive trouble because you are violating workplace safety standards and also like, the literal law

tl;dr the whole “real world” is open book and for damn good reason

Version 1.0 - Fanfic Trope Selector

Click here to visit the random fanfic trope selector. Filled with 126 fandom tropes supplied by my followers (and the internet), take a chance and see which one you get.

Note: The images above are screen captures from the selector. The selector displays rapidly moving text. If this will bother you (or cause issues for your health), close your eyes before clicking. On desktop, hit P to stop the selector and get your trope. On your phone, tap the screen to do the same thing. (I just learned how to do this and I wanted to try it out)

I’ve added some more tropes to the trope selector. There are now 150! And if you’d like a tool to tell you how long your fic should be, I’ve got that covered too.

Fanfic Length Selector

This tool uses the same system as the trope selector, so again be wary of rapidly moving text.

Click here to see how long your next fic will be!
