When all these teen girls watch IT 2017 just because of the “hot actor” playing Pennywise, and they all dream about fucking him, but you’re a 24 year old guy who watched the 1990 original version and it creeps you the fuck out and you chose to watch it because of how scary Tim Curry was and the original Georgie’s death scene still creeps you the fuck out every single time you watch it no matter how many times you watch it, you just never get desensitized to that shit.

You’re pretty astute for a fourth grader.

One of the MANY MANY MANY heart-breaking details about Helga is that she IS smart. Heck, she’s BRILLIANT! She’s well versed in the arts (like in this photo set here), she can and does read WELL beyond the fourth grade level and writes volumes and volumes of poetry. She could have won the spelling bee if she didn’t intentionally take a dive to stick it to her dad and do Arnold a solid. Her anonymous poem won the school wide poetry contest. She’s remarkably intelligent and talented!

…But how many times do we hear her compare herself to her sister or to Lila as “Okay so maybe I’m not smart, pretty, funny, popular or nice like Lila/Olga?” Despite the fact that she IS just as smart if not smarter than the both of them? How many times do we hear her compare herself to her best friend Pheobe - who if we are honest, will admit is more STUDIOUS than intelligent. And how many times do we hear her say “Maybe if I was prettier/nicer/smarter Arnold would like-like me back?”

Helga was raised being constantly compared to her older sister. She’s been told so many times, directly and indirectly that she’ll never be as good or worthy of attention and affection as Olga. And there’s a part of her that believes this. She’s a 9 year old girl - and she believes she’s never going to be smart enough to be noticed. That’s why she resorts to bullying tactics, because negative attention is better than no attention at all.

The Pataki family is a fairly accurate (and brutal) depiction of the impact an alcoholic parent. Children of alcoholics tend to fall into different roles in response to having an alcoholic parent. 

Olga fits the: "Responsible Child" - “Family Hero”

This is the child who is “9 going on 40.” This child takes over the parent role at a very young age, becoming very responsible and self-sufficient. They give the family self-worth because they look good on the outside. They are the good students, the sports stars, the prom queens. The parents look to this child to prove that they are good parents and good people. As an adult the Family Hero is rigid, controlling, and extremely judgmental (although perhaps very subtle about it) - of others and secretly of themselves. They achieve “success” on the outside and get lots of positive attention but are cut off from their inner emotional life, from their True Self. They are compulsive and driven as adults because deep inside they feel inadequate and insecure. The family hero, because of their “success” in conforming to dysfunctional cultural definitions of what constitutes doing life “right”, is often the child in the family who as an adult has the hardest time even admitting that there is anything within themselves that needs to be healed.

Whereas Helga falls into the Lost Child.

“Adjuster” - “Lost Child” This child escapes by attempting to be invisible. They daydream, fantasize, read a lot of books or watch a lot of TV. They deal with reality by withdrawing from it. They deny that they have any feelings and “don’t bother getting upset.” These children grow up to be adults who find themselves unable to feel and suffer very low self-esteem. They are terrified of intimacy and often have relationship phobia. They are very withdrawn and shy and become socially isolated because that is the only way they know to be safe from being hurt. A lot of actors and writers are ‘lost children’ who have found a way to express emotions while hiding behind their characters.

Helga is more of the “Lost Child” at home, and her bullying at school is a result of fearing intimacy and having relationship phobia which drives her to push others away, especially Arnold since she’s the one she values most. Pushing him away and giving him reasons to hate and reject her allows her to avoid the risk of being truly rejected. 

Both Helga and Olga are being raised in a dysfunctional/abusive situation and both are harmed by this. 

That therapist should have contacted CPS. Helga needed a better environment and Miriam needed rehab.
