Have you made peace with the fact that you will probably stay in Lima for the foreseeable future?

I have, and it is probably what is best for my family at the moment. Now that I’m the principal of McKinley and Emma and I have a son, I have a reason to stay. My roots are in Lima, and it is a great place to raise a family. Moving away would be more of an inconvenience for more people than if it were just Emma and I moving out of Lima.

How will you feel if, in the future, any of your students gain major recognition for their art?

I would feel extremely proud for said student. I strive to help my students succeed, and I support them all the way so their dreams are achievable. I may not have been able to go for my dreams when I was younger, but I won’t let that get in the way of supporting and feeling proud of my students, current or former.

@ Mr. Schue

I can’t wait for the video. He sounds adorable.

So how is everything going with the changing of McKinley? You’ll have to let us know when the official first day is so Blaine and I can come and give our support.

Things are going well so far! I still have quite a bit of meetings for certain things, but the puzzle pieces are falling into place bit by bit at McKinley. I will definitely let you know the first day once I check my calendar again.

@ Mr. Schue

That’s adorable. You’ll have to send us a video. Don’t tell Blaine about the musical instruments- he’ll send the little guy a mini keyboard to drive you crazy with as soon as he masters his motor skills.

I will definitely send a video your way when we get the chance! We have plenty of noise making toys, and while I would love to tinker around on a little piano with Daniel, I don’t know how much Emma would love our apartment to get louder than it already is with a toddler.

Sports shouldn't be sacrificed. Obesity is a big problem in North America. How will kids get exercise being stuck in a classroom five days a week? Without their athletics, what will most of them have to look forward to?

There are other forms of athletic abilities that involve the arts, namely dance. Those who choose athletics over the arts have the opportunity to transfer to other schools in the Lima area or just outside of it. While McKinley won’t be offering athletics, there are alternative ways outside of the classroom for students to get exercise. It is up to them to keep active daily whether it be through a dance class during the school day, rehearsing choreography in a musical or doing other activities outside of school, such as running.

Things are not completely worked out regarding certain aspects of the curriculum, but I do understand that an active teenager is a healthy teenager. I am trying my best to put the needs of my students first.

Don't you think it's ridiculously unfair that the school board has just dumped the athletics department in order to throw all these kids into the arts?

I do realize that this decision is unfair to a certain amount of students, especially those who Sue recruited for this school year to specifically play sports, but what is more unfair is the arts being cut in every other school across the country because athletics tend to take a greater precedence.

I was disappointed in the school board’s decision to dump the athletics department when I first heard of it. High school football games are a staple in anyone’s high school experience, but for some, so is participating in high school musicals or playing in the marching band. Many schools are cutting their arts programs due to budget cuts or to give the excess to their athletic departments. The school board’s decision to turn McKinley into a performing arts high school was a wise one in my opinion. Now, the school will be a place where students interested in the arts can express themselves in an environment where they don’t have to worry about the jocks or having their art of choice being cut that semester.

Heard the news, Mr. Schue! Congrats! Hey, don't you think it's kind of ironic how long Coach Sue tried to get you (and the arts) out of McKinley and now that you've finally sort of won the battle, she isn't even there to see it?

Thank you, Anon! I guess you could say that I won the long lasting battle between Coach Sue and I. While she won’t exactly be in the school to see it all unfold, word will get around about McKinley’s new curriculum, whether it be by mouth or the news. I can’t imagine how she’ll take it once she finds out, but I’m glad that the superintendent and the school board saw that the arts are just as important to students as athletics are.
