This is my place to blog about my favorite broadcast and streaming shows (Star Trek: Discovery, This is Us, The Flash, Glee, etc.), movies (Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar), actors (Chris Colfer, Darren Criss, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, and many more), music, food, technology, politics and whatever captures my interest at the moment.

Uber-producer Ryan Murphy has made small screen stars out of A-listers and fresh faces alike.
Darren Criss
Criss’ role of Blaine Anderson on Murphy’s Fox musical “Glee” catapulted him to stardom among a young audience and gave him the opportunity to expand his songwriting, earning his first Emmy nomination for music and lyrics for the 2015 song “This Time” from the series. He also appeared in a two-episode arc on the fifth season of “American Horror Story,” subtitled “Hotel.” But it was Murphy casting him as Andrew Cunanan in the second installment of his other anthology drama, “American Crime Story,” that shot him to larger industry acclaim and earned him his first acting Emmy nomination — and win. “There wasn’t even a script when I signed on,” Criss says, “but there were too many boxes to be ticked that were interesting [and] the fact that Ryan was a part of it certainly gives it an amount of credibility.”

Okay, so my dash is nothing *but* the changes and implications and stuff… but I think I missed the article y'all are talking about, and I’m curious. What is it, and is there a good place to read it?

In order to keep our professional and fan selves somewhat separated and concealed, I will link the entire special issue of Tumblr and Fandom rather than the specific article:

(BTW this open-access, peer-reviewed journal is another great thing from the OTW!)

How to Backup your Tumblr

I was just semi-complaining that I was still looking for a decent way to backup my +6k posts without having to use paid services or even just wordpress (which has an import from tumblr tool that asks for permission to access your blog and also make posts), when I decided to actually put some effort into my google search.

Results were positive: I have successfully backed up my blog

*By which I mean: everything that I have ever posted.  Not included: drafts, queue, likes, followers, following, comments, notes, chat.

I followed this method (word by word), and now have a 450 MB folder on my computer with the name of my blog on it containing:

1. Folder “Archive” (contains .html files listed by month) 2. Folder “Media” (contains gifs and images, mine has +1k files in it; might contain also audios but I have no way of confirming that because I’ve never reblogged an audio post from this blog) 3. Folder “Posts” (contains single .html files, each one a post; I have +4k files in it) 4. Folder “Theme” (contains only my avatar, but it might be a matter of if you have personalized themes or not) 5. .html file “Index” (by opening it it will give you the archive of your blog organized by month; clicking on a month will open up the archive for that month, and you’ll be able to read all the posts for that month as if you were on your blog**, except sans your theme graphic, with each page containing 50 posts)

**I can see gifs, links, embedded videos, tags, number of notes (but I can’t open up the notes, clearly), text is also correctly formatted.

So yeah, in case anyone wants a very quick way to back up their blog, it took me less than 10 minutes.

P.S. I didn’t have any issue, but to be on the safe side always check for spyware and virus threats before and after downloading anything.

this is actually really useful if you have an art blog full of years of work that you otherwise no longer have access to the original files. A lot of the art I have in the early days of my art blog are in that boat. I did this process JUST for that reason and I was pretty astonished at just how many pieces of media it backs up! (literally all of it) Drawings I didn’t even realize were sitting in my archive due to having been posted to text posts or undercuts, or untagged for years! It’s worth it if just for that, even if tumblr isn’t shutting down or deleting your blog.

This actually worked (after some big trial and error) on my Mac! I’ve got my blog saved now and a bunch of the fan art blogs. What a relief!

How big was the file? That’s my main worry because I have (goes to check) over 57,000 posts HOLY SHIT DUDE

I’m just laughing my ass off that we published an article on Tumblr and Fandom this summer and now it’s irrelevant.

And by “laughing my ass off” I mean “crying into my coffee.” Fw: @klaineharmony @sothinky @sleepdeprivedmind

Huh?? What in the world happened? @honeysucklepink  Please fill me in!

@sleepdeprivedmind, so if you go back through my blog a bit, you can see the announcement Tumblr made about its policy changes, which supposedly are flagging and removing any visual nudity, including fanart and “female-presenting nipples” (yes, it actually says that) and any visual pornography. But, of course they are using algorithms, which are painfully imprecise, and already I’ve seen people reblogging many things that are getting tagged for “violating” the new policies, when they aren’t the least bit inappropriate (a male with with only his shirt off, for example, in a group photo.) I saw a post where they had flagged Darren’s Entertainment Weekly cover, which is just a close up of his face! Another that was a classical painting of Jesus with (again) a nude torso. It’s a mess. And we know how this goes - we had similar things happen on FF.net and LJ. They start with the visual, including nude fanart, and then the writers are next. So people are understandably upset, and trying to figure out where to go next, if indeed that becomes necessary. I’ve reblogged a lot of posts about backups (WordPress) and fandom-run alternatives (Dreamwidth and Pillowfort). And if they destroy the platform for adult fandom, they’ve just made our entire TWC article irrelevant, in six months. Lovely!

Thanks for the link! @klaineharmony

@klaineharmony Thanks for catching me up! I’ll go back and find the announcement. I had read chatter about it (mostly, the “female-presenting nipples”  🤦🏽‍♀️)  but didn’t realize the full implications of the algorithm until you explained it. WOW. What a domino effect and mess. (They flagged Darren’s recent EW cover?? Good grief!)

Please keep me posted as to what y’all decide to do moving forward. Seems like we’re migrating platforms every few years. As for TWC article, geez what a monkey wrench. Agree that we have to laugh to keep from crying. The absurdity of it all.  The downside of the ever-changing trend of technology and social platforms.
