The thing is, those Manic Pixie Dream Girl movies aren't unrealistic because that kind of thing never happens in real life. They're unrealistic because they never show the epilogue five years later, where the Sadboy Protagonist is posting on reddit going "help, my girlfriend has cool unique hobbies and it's embarrassing me."

I don't know how this comes as a shock to some people, but if you're dating a girl with a bug collection, you're going to be dating a girl who proudly shows dead bugs to your mom.

Hey now. Sometimes you come back five years later and now they're both cool girls

Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1

The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.

So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.

So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.

Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.

And the probe is working again.

From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

Fuck, this may very well be the end of Eurovision as a cultural force in Europe.

What’s going on:

  • The Dutch artist have been showing some mild unease at the Israel presence there this year during the past week. The Irish ones have been forced to change their looks because it included the words “ceasefire” and “freedom for Palestine” in ancient gaelic script.
  • Yesterday, someone from the Israel delegation joked about the dutch artist’s father death (the Dutch song is dedicated to him) and there was “an incident” (undisclosed, but the rumor-mill says the Dutch guy may have punched the jokester)
  • Eurovision have disqualified the Netherlands from today’s final.
  • The Dutch broadcaster association (those who pick who to send to EV) posted this a few hours ago:
  • There has been protest within the Finnish public broadcaster asking for Finland withdrawal
  • The head of the political party who is the junior partner in the government of Spain is also calling for our withdrawal.
  • The Israeli delegation seem to have spent the week literally harassing anyone they perceive as critical, with several complains about their behavior already being published.
  • The Israeli song is one of the favorites to win, and if they do, next year Eurovision would be organized by them. If that happen, there is no way several countries wouldn’t just refuse to take part.

So yeah, there is a chance this may be it for the festival. Good job, Eurovision. Great fucking job.

Shit is going down HARD in Eurovision right now.We are hours from the beginning of the fest and in the last couple of hours:

  • The french artist stopped his song during the dress rehearsal today, gave a speech about peace, and left the stage
  • The Irish ones sent a press release asking the EBU to disqualify Israel for the comments their broadcaster had done about the Irish song
  • Both Ireland and Greece didn’t show up to the festival flag parade that kickstarts the show.
  • Norway’s artist who were going to be the spokesperson of the jury tonight announced she is declining to participate… An hour ago, about 8 hours before she would have to go live

the problem with autism is sometimes you want to do something (brave) but you need someone to gently walk you through each step so you know what will happen. and people don’t like doing that

i had to phone a taxi today, scary

every time i see this post i think of that person who posted on reddit that they wanted to go to subway for the first time but they were scared they would say the wrong thing so someone gave them step by step instructions for the entire process and what all the choices would be and when they would ask what question and i just think

someone will

someone out there will see you and say "yes. the world is scary. but let me hold your hand and show you how to do it anyways"

everyone needs that someone, and everyone can be that someone

The subreddit r/explainlikeimscared is a surprisingly good resource for this. People are always very kind and thorough from what I've seen, and I spend a decent amount of time there giving walkthroughs and answering questions when I know the process.

All those videos that are like “Why is this big area of this country uninhabited???” always have five reasons it might be.

  1. It’s really cold
  2. It’s really hot
  3. Big mountains are hard to build on
  4. No water and humans generally need that
  5. All four of the above all at once

“Why is the population of Spain almost all concentrated in these little areas?”

Well it’s probably the mountains innit

“Why does most of Russia live on the west side of the country?”

Well it’s probably the freezing cold winters and boiling hot summers innit

“Why does most of China live east of this line?”

Here there be water, my friends.

Many great societies have managed a living in some of the less habitable parts of the planet but they have generally been hardy and small in number while the rest of us have stuck to the mostly temperate river areas.

Yes there’s ways to get water in the Sahara desert and ways to get warm in the Arctic but most people generally prefer flat areas with livable temperatures and lots of water.

Like that’s why the American west was mostly sparsely populated until relatively recently. The fact that there’s so many of us there now is frankly a result of the hubristic technology that is the air conditioner.
