ya know what, this year sucked so much in so many ways. it was painful, unfair, cruel and difficult, to say the least. the new year won’t magically erase all of the problems and issues we’ve faced in 2020 but i genuinely hope you and your loved ones are able to catch a break. i hope 2021, in whatever ways possible, is kinder to you. i hope healing comes fast and i hope all the heaviness put upon you starts to lessen

i hope you pursue what you love in 2021, supported and surrounded by people who are so happy to have you in their lives. i hope you realize that we grow from failure, and that the lessons you learn will benefit you so much. those bumps along the roads, the sad days, the doubting, things not turning out just the way you imagined they would - they will happen, and it will be okay. you’ll face it, you’ll survive, grow, and you’ll make a wonderful year for yourself, regardless, or indeed because of that.

Another day, another politician that thinks Trump doing something they do means Trump should get all the criticism instead of realizing they’re both wrong

The difference here is that Trump spends tax payer money for his golfing and AOC spent her own paycheck on a video game to unwind. They literally aren’t the same thing at all

Right, where do you think that paycheck comes from?

Were you born this stupid or did you have to work at it?

Ok, just to be clear, do politicians get payed with tax money or not?

If you honestly think a government employee spending their own salary is functionally identical to charging leisure trips to your own golf courses to an expense account and billing the Secret Service for being there, just because they’re both paid for with taxpayer money, I can’t help you.

But what’s the difference in the end? They both paid for something with taxpayer money.

Okay. It’s very simple: When the government disburses money to its employees in the form of a salary, the transaction where the taxpayer is concerned is concluded. The taxpayer has paid the employee for services rendered. What that employee does with that salary after that isn’t the taxpayer’s business, since the taxpayer already got what they paid for.

To put it another way, you wouldn’t argue that Doris from the DMV is “spending taxpayer money” when she spends some of her salary on a pedicure and claim it’s the equivalent of a presidential golfing trip, or that a soldier buying a case of beer with his salary is a waste of tax money. Because you are paying them for the job they did.

In other words, it’s not fucking taxpayer money anymore.

It is, however, still taxpayer money when it is part of an account set aside for expenses incurred in the execution of one’s duties, and the President uses it to pay himself for taking vacations, and to pay himself again for the taxpayer-provided security detail.

And even if I were to play your stupid false equivalence game: At $300 per console and a game price of $59.99, AOC would have to buy 369,455 Nintendo Switches with a copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons for each to reach the $133 million racked up by Trump’s golf trips. So even if you were to blubber about how it’s all a tragic loss of taxpayer money either way, there’s your fucking difference you goddamn moron.

We’re done here.

Ah, now I understand. Thanks for explaining. But please refrain from using insults.

All right, yeah, I got a bit heated; I honestly thought you were asking these questions in bad faith. And I’m sorry that you’re getting dog-piled.

Ah, no worries. You were the first one to actually explain my faults to me, so thanks again. And don’t worry about the dog-piling, it’ll die out pretty quick.

Reblogging this version because it’s honestly so encouraging to see someone realize they were wrong and change their opinion about something.

It’s also pleasant when the person who corrected them also apologized for using insults instead of doubling-down.  The fact that this interaction is a nice surprise, however, is in its own way discouraging.

esp if youre nonblack who don't live in the u.s, instead of trying so desperately to separate yourself from what's happening, it can actually be a great time to wake the fuck up and examine your own behavior and the antiblackness in your country, cuz antiblackness is a WORLDWIDE problem. black people suffer from racism by nonblacks everywhere, black people are being killed by police and suffer racially biased policing in way more countries than just the us. you either don't wanna see it, or see it and don't give a shit. if you try to listen to black people in your country i'm sure you'll see how the current events in america are more than relatable for us.

ignoring this and having the nerve to talk down the suffering of black people is ignorant and cruel and racist. there's simply no excuse for this in times when black people fight and cry and protest for their lives to matter. LISTEN to our voices, listen to our struggles, they are never just an "american problem". support black people everywhere

God why is reading outside such an ethereal experience. Like there is just something about feeling the suns warmth enveloping you and having the pages falling between your fingers and just looking up every often to see a bird filling your ears with its song that makes me feel like this is what i’m meant to do with my life.

I took my father to see Rogue One today. I’ve wanted to take him for a while. I wanted my Mexican father, with his thick Mexican accent, to experience what it was like to see a hero in a blockbuster film, speak the way he does. And although I wasn’t sure if it was going to resonate with him, I took him anyway. When Diego Luna’s character came on screen and started speaking, my dad nudged me and said, “he has a heavy accent.” I was like, “Yup.” When the film was over and we were walking to the car, he turns to me and says, “did you notice that he had an accent?” And I said, “Yeah dad, just like yours.” Then my dad asked me if the film had made a lot of money. I told him it was the second highest grossing film of 2016 despite it only being out for 18 days in 2016 (since new year just came around). He then asked me if people liked the film, I told him that it had a huge following online and great reviews. He then asked me why Diego Luna hadn’t changed his accent and I told him that Diego has openly talked about keeping his accent and how proud he is of it. And my dad was silent for a while and then he said, “And he was a main character.” And I said, “He was.” And my dad was so happy. As we drove home he started telling me about other Mexican actors that he thinks should be in movies in America. Representation matters.
