More people are concerned with why women stay in abusive relationships than why men are abusing women

SAY IT AGAIN

I’m not that girlfriend who is going to go through your phone every time I see you to make sure you aren’t cheating. I’m also not the type to not let you go out with friends because I don’t trust you. I’m not here to take over you life, I’m here to make you happy and to be there by your side through every decision, obstacle, and most importantly to see you grow in so many ways. BUT DAMN I DARE A MOTHER FUCKER TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ME.

Grab some tissues - you’re gonna need it.

From Buzzfeed, taken from the AMA of Caroll Spinney, the man who’s played Big Bird on Sesame Street all these years.

Caroll Spinney may be beloved, but he isn’t the kind of actor that most people know by name — he’s much better recognized as the feathery 8-foot-2-inch tall character he’s played on Sesame Street for over 45 years, Big Bird.

The 81-year-old, who has four Daytime Emmy Awards (plus a Lifetime Achievement Award), also does the puppetry for Oscar the Grouch.

Today, the puppeteer did a fascinating AMA on Reddit about his decades-long career touching children’s lives. And one story was particularly memorable.

User man_mayo asked: “What has been your most meaningful interaction with a child during filming? Or maybe from someone who grew up watching you and relayed a poignant story?”

And Spinney delivered what might be one of the most devastating stories ever:

Okay, here’s one. This is a very sad story, but it’s real.

I got a letter from a fan who said his little boy, who was 5 years old, his name was Joey, he was dying of cancer. And he was so ill, the little boy knew he was dying.

So the man, in his letter, asked if I would call the little boy. He said the only thing that cheered him at all in his fading state was to see Big Bird on television. So once in a while, he wouldn’t see Big Bird on some days, because he wasn’t necessarily in every show. So he asked could I telephone him, and talk to the boy, tell him what a good boy he’s been.

So I took a while to look up a phone, because this was before cell phones. And they got a long cord to bring a phone to the boy. And I had Big Bird say “Hello! Hello Joey! It’s me, Big Bird!”

So he said “Is it really you, Big Bird?”

“Yes, it is.”

I chatted a while with him, about ten minutes, and he said “I’m glad you’re my friend Big Bird.” And I said “I’d better let you go now.”

He said “Thank you for calling me Big Bird. You’re my friend. You make me happy.”

And it turns out that his father and mother were sitting with him when the phone call came. And he was very, very ill that day. And they called the parents in, because they weren’t sure how long he’d last.

And so his father wrote to me right away, and said “Thank you, thank you” - he hadn’t seen him smile since October, and this was in March - and when the phone was hung up, he said “Big Bird called me! He’s my friend.”

And he closed his eyes. And he passed away.

And I could see that what I say to children can be very important. And he said “We haven’t seen our little boy smile in MONTHS. He smiled, as he passed away. It was a gift to us. Thank you.”

if u weren’t aware of salvation army’s homophobia, its prety hardcore

a guy in a salvos truck yelled at me and my gf while we were kissing today so I was thinking of this

Do you know, when I was in high-school I went to the mall near my house with my girlfriend to do some Christmas shopping.

We were there, sixteen year old me and seventeen year old her, holding hands and window-shopping, minding our own business.

This Salvation Army shitheel gets aggro about it in the middle of the mall and I’m there totally flabbergasted cause like, it’s christmas

Only, 16!Tabi had even less composure than 26!Tabi, so I lost my fucking mind on her.

Thing is: when I’m really angry, I don’t rage, I go all cold and apparently that freaks people out, because I could see my gf backing up and the lady getting tense and then I realized that anger doesn’t solve problems.

So instead, I started wailing.

Picture this: 5’4, tiny, blonde haired high school girl with her little violin on her back and pearls in her ears just as PTA-approved as could be, full on sobbing in the hallway.

Just, sobbing like my dog’s been shot.

Now my gf’s like, “oh fuck” and the lady’s like “oh fuuuuck!” and I’m here, head thrown back, tears down my cheeks and in that shrill, distressed, /loud/ voice, “WHY WOULD YOU B-b-be so MEAN?! It’s CHRISTMAS!”

And the lady’s like “please stop Oh fuck” because now we have a crowd, and this Molly Weasley of a woman putters over, “what’s the matter, dear?”

And mall security’s coming and this bell ringer is looking very uncomfortable so I just look at this matronly ellen-watching suburban housewife lady, eyes wide and wet and my lip wobbling.

“I was, she s-said, s-s-she said I was going to HELL!”

And I burst right back into tears.

Maaaaaaaan, they didn’t even stick around to ask why she’d said it. Soon as I said it, Mall po-po bounced her like a fucking pogo stick.

We get outside and my girlfriend’s like “that is the most Slytherin thing I have ever seen anyone do.”

It was four years before I saw the Army back in that mall.

that is beautiful

The Salvation Army denied a transwoman named Jennifer Gale entry into their homeless shelter - the only one in her city that was women-only - because of her trans status. They were having one of the worst winters on record. She was found dead on a sidewalk near a church the next day, having had a heart attack brought on by the stress of sleeping on a sidewalk in freezing temperatures.

She was locally well-known; a constant mayoral candidate, someone who attended any and all town hall-type meetings where citizens could ask questions and have their say. She was a former Marine who fought for the rights of the homeless and the LGBT community.

Remember Jennifer Gale, and don’t give the Salvation Army a fucking penny.
