                          Well. Aren’t you a smug bastard ?
It goes without saying, a repeat of history really isn’t necessary ; but everyone knows there’s only room for one in here this exchange. And frankly, Jim’s just disappointed in the both of them now. Features come spoiling together, his eyebrows furrowing and his lips sucking in and his nose crinkling. God damn  — you’re drooling on it.
                                                        ❝ All right, Godzilla. ❞
His fingers pulse and itch in their empty wake. Arguing the toss with strangers - no less those outside the species - wasn’t so much a wary advisor as much as it was natural instinct to hold his ground. You could argue it was a territorial pursuit, or even something to keep a guy like Jim happy ; and guys like Jim, they like to win. And right now, he needs his goddamn map to make it past round one because:
                              i. your home is here, whereas his is far away.                              ii. the chewtoy you’re having so much fun with? that’s his only ride back.                 &          iii. fine. if you think you’re so great, why don’t you go press that button riiiiiiight ——
image
And THAT - that right there, my dear scaly foe, is why some just aren’t cut out for the ever advancing technology. In contrast to the beast - painted into a corner by neon greens and adorning patterns and splotches - the waning light provides at the end of the tunnel for Jim. And in this crazed pool of whirling thoughts, there’s only one marked in red, a single repeating word to claim association with his target. Go. His feet are off, sprinting before the English language has caught up with his tongue ; little time lapses and sound might have passed him in this moment  — but goddamn: gold was a mighty fine colour in the palm of his hands. With a single click, every ray of green energy retreats into the spherical case, leaving the two back at square one.
He laughs in the face of nightmares.

all it took was the abrupt absence of the intriguing green glowy lights, the entire sky vanishing without a trace, and the golden orb into the possession of pale hands to have toothless hissing in displeasure. for that brief moment however he is stunned silence, too amazed by the phenomenon to move or pounce at the other even on instinct, dazed with the light that had shined through mere air. all he could think about and question was what the technology behind such a thing was. surely not even the vikings or gothi to stir that sort of magic.

it wasn't until he heard the bushes rustling and the funny looking viking boy disappear into the forest ahead did he snap out of it. growling in defiance, he scrambles after the other, fast and quick on his feet to scurry into the forest. roaring as he dashes forward, left and right, vaulting over trees and hissing in infuriating, he searches for the boy.

---yet if you are a dragon

perhaps that would be a different story

the small huff has his hears perking up, a slender, glossy                      black tail whipping against the soft stems of the grass                      beneath him, while he stirs from his slumber and feels                      his snout twitch. the instant detection of an unfamiliar                      presence as his eyes sharper on instinct, needle thin slits                      snapping to the right and fixating upon -- a dragon?

It was a testament to how well he knew his dragon, the long years spent in a nearly symbiotic companionship permitting Hiccup to understand the Nightfury better than he would ever understand most people, that he sensed more than saw the brief hint of distress vibrating underneath Toothless’ scales.

And maybe it was a testament to how well Toothless knew him, too, that Hiccup could almost hear the sympathy and sadness in the dragon’s low, soft keening. The Nightfury sensed Hiccup’s loss and empathized, intellect shining in his luminous green eyes.

Hiccup’s instincts were drawn to comfort his friend. He felt a little guilt, too, for allowing himself to wallow like this, and for his best friend to have to see it.

"I’m alright, I’m alright," He reassured, with a small, sheepish laugh. "Just tired."

His mouth split into a grin as he watched Toothless shift, gesturing to the saddle as his entire body tensed as if he were bracing himself to fly. The sight alone made Hiccup’s heart ache for the wind, the sky, the sight of the sea and earth thousands of miles overhead.

image

He pushed himself to his feet, took Toothless’ face in his hands and laughed. “You bet, bud.” It was easy, fluid, the way he leaped onto the saddle upon Toothless back, hooked his metal prosthetic in place. Toothless dark wings opened up, and with a powerful leap they were off, darting into the vanilla sky.

Hiccup felt whatever weight twisting in his chest melt away as he felt the wind against his face, higher and higher until Berk was a speck below them, and Hiccup was suddenly not tired anymore.

He closed his eyes for a moment, allowing his dragon to be his eyes. When he opened them again, Hiccup leaned towards Toothless’ ear. “Where to, Bud?” He laughed, “Surprise me!”

              Surprises, huh.

at the single command, toothless took a slow gliding dive forward, letting out a soft coo in delight as the wind touched his scales and the faint clouds met his sight. He had grown so accustomed to feeling the weight of his best friend on his back that even simply gliding without him felt so -- empty. boring. he supposed it was because both of them had grown so use to piloting eachother, then being one without the other didn't feel right as a whole.

hiccup guided his directions and flight;                     the same way toothless supported his                     stance and walk.

crippled both souls,                                   but steady in bravery.                                    alike in dignity

the distress that had been piling on the dragon had drifted away as well, only the sheer exhilaration of taking to the sky with his rider the only thing that circled and occupied his mind. however, now he had to think of what SURPRISE he was to show the other.

while hiccup use to be away for significant meetings with other vikings and gothi and astrid in berk, toothless wold scurry away with his dragon friends onto the forests, go on exploring until they detect their riders calling for them. for now, however, toothless had a very special place in mind, one that he went to when hiccup was away; when he was alone to think; or when he missed their old days.

a low gurgling sound, one of delight. he suddenly changed his directions towards the forests of berk, a sharp glide through the trees and atop a small stream of water that inevitable passed RAVEN POINT. Then, he lends inside a cove; one that had a lake, trees, and a small gaping hole upon the walls where a young viking once passed in order to encounter with the NIGHTFURY.

Ladies and reptilian,  today was the last day of    Jim’s life ; he’s not yet registered it, but perhaps in    his dying moments, he’ll make peace with this un-    timely   incident.   Like   it   or   not   (   spoiler  alert:    he  doesn’t  ),  it sure was a helluva way to bite  the    dust.
                                          ❝ —— H - hey !!
He hears his own voice obscured by the sound    of  a  slithering  shimmy   and   ten   tons   of   heart-    pounding adrenal fire bouncing  between the cavity    of his chest. The distance with which the creature’s    attention had been taken was his ticket out, but not    without his god damn round-circley chew toy.

He’s going to pretend to feel a connection to this    slithering predicament here, maybe  then  might  the    creature’s  receptors pick up on the electrochemical    signals that erupt from Jim’s soul.

He could understand the other perfectly.

which was why he was deliberately ignoring him when he told him to put down the ball that so genuinely fascinated toothless he felt the instant urge to show it to hiccup knowing his rider wold love to take a look at it; and because it belonged to this scrawny two legs, pretending to be a friend, toothless took pleasure in watching him fret over it.

                  why was a toy ball so important to the other, he wondered as he let saliva coat it.. holding it in his mouth, dropping it, and rolling it away from the other before pouncing around with it, he made a few things obvious;

                              i. he was intelligent; understanding.                              ii. he was purposely playing with the other                 &          iii. you can't catch me.

wiggling his bottom and spreading his wings only slightly, he crouched down in excitement as he watched the other stumble after him. however, in the process of rolling the ball away, one of his talons had pricked into the ball, and to his sudden surprise, the sky had exploded. growling; briefly frightened by the burst, he perked up only when he realized stars surrounding him, the ones he flied under during night time. there was the moon too, and green glowing lights, and how this was beyond something phenomenal ; he was left stunned in spot.

He couldn’t move… not in this condition. Not while he had                  several broken bones, open wounds and this massive                  creature still hunting him. Yes, he was in pain, so much                  pain, but there was no sense crying or screaming over it.                  No pain lasts forever. So, Ronin kept himself under control,                  steadying his breathing, trying to focus on getting himself                  out of this situation. He could try crawling, or dragging himself                  away and call for Serika. Well, that seems like the only option                  he has right now. And so, in a fit of pained groans, he begins                  to shift his body weight over, slowly but surely. And that was                  when the ground began to shake underneath his fingertips,                  informing him of the danger growing closer and closer with                  each passing second. Blue eyes stay locked with the open                  spaces ahead, just waiting until the creature made presence.                  And once it came into view, Ronin almost laughed. It was jumping                  around like a little child, as if it were still playing around with                  him. But once it was nearly just a few inches away from his                  own broken  frame, Ronin found himself gaping. Eyes searching                  upward in great awe, looking at this creature now in the sunlight,                  scales and all. It was almost like a reptile, isn’t it? But with wings.                  A reptile that could fly. You learn something new everyday, don’t you?
Ronin gives off a breathy laugh aloud, shifting around in an                  attempt to stand, but it hurt too much, he couldn’t do anything.                  It was clear the creature didn’t necessarily mean to hurt him,                  for if it did, he would be dead by now. And then it made a noise,                  one that yet again made Ronin laugh, it nudging him around                  gently.
”Ooh, careful. You gave me quite the toss                                                            now, didn’t you?”
He was speaking to it like it was a friend. It certainly is beautiful,                  isn’t itCertainly deceiving, too. On one side it could swallow                  him whole, but on the other it was soft and caring. But once the                  massive wing is placed underneath him, letting out a wince, Ronin                  was carried away to a watering spring.
“You are full of surprises, you know that?
He was smiling. This creature is intelligent, and understanding.                  It knew he was hurt. Wow. Ronin didn’t know what else to say                  besides… WOW. And the water droplets surrounding him began                  to soak in, cleaning away the blood. It stung, and he held his                  breath as it did, but after a while it felt soothing. However it wasn’t                  going to fight off the infection. He doesn’t even know if he will live.                  Assessing himself as three broken ribs, a broken leg, injury to the                  head… oh. His vision was suddenly blurry. And that  p o u n d i n g.                  Ugh, it hurt. Maybe he just needed to close his eyes a moment.                  Maybe he just needed sleep.
                                                             ”Thank you for helping me.”
                 He manages, before slowly slipping.

█ ▌█ ▌█ ▌ ☠ ⊱ ———

                   Hiccup had trained him.

and over many things, so to say. how to restrain against fury, how to control hunger and thirst, how to share, how to not get into trouble, how to not eat shoes, and how to accept help and not eat humans. if anything, toothless understood that he wasn't allowed to harm anything viking or scrawny two legs that screamed when they saw him. this little guy here could -- identify as a viking, yes?

perhaps, he thought, a different species of viking, like how there were different kinds of dragons. hiccup would like to see this flying viking for sure, knowing his beloved rider dreamt of flying by himself too; going as far as to invent extraordinary pieces of mechanics that helped him glide in the sky. sadly he was on his own for now, as hiccup had rather significant meetings to attend with astrid. what could he do to help the other?

nodding at his acknowledgement, though wailing at his sudden stillness, toothless let him rest upon the certain leaf. though getting up himself, he felt alarmed. the flying viking was going to die if left alone like this, without care or help or proper treatment. on the other hand, gothi wasn't around. toothless couldn't tell ointment herbs apart either.

then an idea struck him ---- the flying viking would have a family yes? more of his kind, a place like berk where he lived? pausing during his worried pacing, he wiggles his tail and thinks over it. only people that little could thoroughly help the injured fellow...

he thinks back to how he had caught his attention in the first place. the flying viking had been spotted a little far back before toothless had chased him here into the spring water, and he had done so after his obnoxious, content purring over rolling around in soft grass strands.

scurrying away towards said portion of land, toothless began grumbling and roaring. if there were anymore flying vikings, surely they would hear him, and if they did, he hoped their curiosity would lead them to keeping an eye on toothless. thus the dragon would pounce away and back to the spring water, where he hoped they had caught sight of their fallen comrade. after he saw a few familiar flickers of light within the bushes, toothless stuck his tongue out happily, before scurrying away into the forest so as to not cause fright. maybe he would return after a while, though he wondered if he would see the same flying viking again.

Years have passed, nights and days, left in the past.

Yet riding on a dragon’s back was still something that gave him goose bumps every single time.

The wind, the fresh air, the small droplets of salty water that touched his skin whenever they flew close to the ocean, all of them were small things Hiccup enjoyed no matter what.

But flying when the moon was shining so bright, standing out in the darkness of the cold nights, those were moments that the boy cherished so dearly.

Seeing how Toothless became one with the dark blue, almost black sky simply amazed him.           Seeing the night fury be one of his kind, disguised as the night itself, flying through the clouds, then even higher were everything was clear and Toothless became practically invisible, made Hiccup often feel as if he was floating.

Though he loved all the maneuvers the dragon did -with the young man on his back or alongside him when he was wearing his own flying suit-, just gliding while gazing at the stars was what he felt would be perfect right now.

Toothless probably was eager to play some more, but Hiccup knew very well that despite that, the dragon must be feeling exhausted from the day they had today as alpha and chief of dragons and the village.

He leaned forward, resting both of his arms on the winged reptile’s head, and scratched the spot between the dragon’s eyes, just like he liked it.

"How about we just take it easy today? The dragon races are next wekk, and I thiiiink that maybe we should save up some energy for that. What do you think, bud?"

"Besides, there’s something I would like to talk about with you…"

                    A nod in response.

he was in a relatively placid, composed mood himself. seeing                 hiccup today, and getting this rare chance to spend time with                 him before both of them were inevitably occupied with their                  responsibilities once more, it all made him very content. he                 figured it was also the reason he was in such a splendid mood.

letting his wings stretch, at a normal pace with his flight, the                 dragon glided over the ocean and rocks, hovering through                 crab caves and then lifting towards the sky with grace. it was                 the pat to his neck that had him tilting his head back to face                  hiccup, and though he enjoyed seeing the delight in his                  beloved friend's optics, he also detected an element of                  stress.

something to talk about? toothless let out a grunt in under-                 standing, tilting right to circle around berk and be a shadow                 under the sky filled sky. it was all beautiful; but he supposed                 but made it all even better was that he had someone to share                 it with now. and that being with his best friend, who was                  and would always be by his side.

it was after an hour of roaming around -- he wasn't sure -- that                 he surfaced back to berk, thought quietly and tip toeing back                 to their house before anyone woke up. successfully sneaking                  back in, toothless crouched and lowered himself; making it                 easier for hiccup to dismount.

Yes, this creature was one-hundred times the size of Ronin, and                  could destroy all of Moonhaven in just a single step. And it may                  be hard to believe, but Ronin has seen much worse. He has                  watched countless friend be killed, decay take over the forest,                  and stompers come to cut down their trees. So this creature was                  nothing compared to the war he has seen rage in this forest.
Ronin scurries along the branch, waiting just the right amount                                              of time before he thrusts himself into the air, a few spacious                                              seconds spent soaring before he lands crouching, and off he                                              goes again. Like thunder chasing lightening, he wasn’t afraid.                                              Because this was everyday of his life. Death always liked to                                              play games and follow him around, but he always managed                                              to outsmart and outrun it.
However, the creature was nearing him, and it almost made                  him smile. He certainly is a challenge, isn’t he? So Ronin                  pushes himself to move even faster, running and running,                  avoiding the claws that came latching at him. Only… attention                  was on the hands when it should of been on the tail…                  And Ronin felt the sting of pain as he is thrown to the side.                  Whisked away like he wasn’t even there.
Back colliding with something so hard, Ronin could of sworn                                              he heard something snap. He couldn’t move, couldn’t speak…                                              couldn’t breathe. Well jeez, that thing certainly packs a punch.                                              He lay there on the ground, sudden bruising happening all over                                              his skin. And there was blood coming from… somewhere. Is this                                              how he finally dies? It certainly feels lonely.

█ ▌█ ▌█ ▌ ☠ ⊱ ———

                  Where'd he go?

the nightfury frowned, scales furrowing in confusion as he scuttled around in attempts of trying to find the silver light he had been chasing, that now seemingly vanished without a trace. he was sure that the bump he had felt on his tail had been no case of mere imagination! crouching lower and letting his snout touch the grass tops, he sniffed in. though there was no focused scent, there was just that something; the smell of pollen and fresh leaves.

               ——— Gotcha!

following the incoherent trail, though mostly relying on his sharp vision, he found his way back towards the entrance of that which lead to the grass fields. from there on, it took a few glances left and right to detect the faint flash dying under ruffling stems. pouncing over, toothless skidded to a stop with what he thought was a small insect on the ground.

no, it was no insect, but a viking! a tiny one. as he lowered himself to scan the little thing, his optics zoomed in to adjust to the sight before he took a first blink. a human? but it had wings---- the odd notion of seeing a flying human startled the dragon enough that for a moment it was unsure how to react, and toothless was known for instant reactions that could involve abrupt flurries of emotions.  a low grumble left his throat as he gently nudged the little viking.

he notices that his clothes were odd too, and very different from the ones that hiccup wore. curling in his right wing, the dragon gently slipped it under the poor fellow with great care, since he wasn't entirely sure of how bad his injuries were-- he just knew he couldn't fly at the moment; much similar to toothless' case, since he couldn't fly as well without his rider. a low purr was released, one of anguish----

he had grown more sympathetic since being welcomed into berk, and since this wasn't little viking wasn't food, toothless was concerned. trudging away slowly, he came to a stop at a fresh water spring, carefully sliding the flying stranger upon a leaf that was surrounded by dewdrops.
