will never get over how DIFFERENT kevin is in tsc compared to the rest of aftg

neil put kevin on a pedestal at first. he was everything neil wanted to be, but he was terrifying because he was a symbol of the past. and then as time went on, neil saw him as cold, and bitchy, and a coward. but he was still Kevin Day™️. And kevin promised to teach him every night but he was still an asshole with a one track mind and a fear of riko.

but jeans pov, oh my GOD jeans pov of kevin. sure he’s resentful. he’s angry that he was left behind the first time kevin had felt pain at rikos hands when jean had been ENDURING for years, and “slit his throat on the way out”. but even then, kevin is so gentle with him. he holds his hands and grabs his face and tells jean to trust neil. he’s the beautiful boy who asked jean to teach him french in secret. he sends him post cards and brings him back magnets. he made jean promise to stay alive, because he couldn’t lose him.

both jean and neil are in awe of kevin’s prowess, but it’s so easy to see kevin as an exy obsessed douche through neil’s eyes, meanwhile you put him in front of jean and he turns so unbelievably soft.

before tsc came out I was all for the idea that the Trojans would care so much about jean they'd break their good guy streak and get a red card defending him, but after having read it I don't think that's the message Nora is heading toward.

all through the sunshine court jean is coming to terms with the Trojan's kindness and empathy. many times he's had conversations about the raven's play style and how toxic and unnecessarily violent it is. jean thinks it's normal and the way the game should be played, he says exactly that to them a lot, but in his head he also acknowledged that the Trojans are the second best right behind the ravens. he knows in his bones that the trojans are going to win championships now that the ravens are gone. according to jean's definition of how the game should be played, nobody but the ravens 'play it right'. but then how are they part of the big three? how are the Trojans championship material when everything about them is antithesis to what he was taught?

I think jean is hurtling towards the realization that the ravens didn't play right. that none of the violence enacted on him and on their opponents was correct or necessary. the Trojans confuse him the same way Neil confuses him, they refuse to give in to pressure. no matter what physical or verbal abuse is thrown their way during games, they never return it. and jean thought at first it meant they don't fight back, but I think in the next book when he starts playing with the Trojans he'll see that they do fight back. just not in the way he was taught.

as vindicating and cathartic as it might seem for the Trojans to get red carded, I think what would be even better for jean's healing is to be nice himself. to play a whole season without getting carded once. to push away instead of towards. to do it so much that by the end he doesn't even think about it.

I want jean to break his cage. I want him to spit on everything the raven instilled in him about how you're 'supposed' to play exy. when he's facing off with an opposing team, and they're calling him a whore and a traitor, I want him to look them in the eyes, smile, and say in the words of the iconic Catalina Alvarez, "have a winning day!"

I want him to kill them with kindness.

there's so many things in tsc that just come at you all at once, so it's hard to focus on just one thing to break down, but the most glaring thing that stood out to me is how hard it is to really put someone back together. especially someone so shattered that it's nigh impossible to glue them back and pray they don't crumble under your ministrations.

if jean is neil's foil, then jeremy is andrew's direct antithesis. whereas andrew is a steady bedrock because he's been broken too many times to know how to weather the storm, jeremy is too soft hands and an even softer soul. he cares and cares and cares. so empathetic and so gentle it almost breaks your heart. you pray for the impossibility that jeremy can survive knowing the truth because if he doesn't, then what hope does jean have? so you pray he can be steady too. that he can weather the storm as well. that he will not break when knowing that just under the surface lies shark-infested waters.

but then you remember the beginning. "even knowing everything could go completely sideways, you'd make that choice every time"

in every other universe, jean has not survived. but in every other universe, he did not have the trojans.

You know what makes Kaz a great boss? What makes him a better boss then both Pekka Rollins and Per Haskel?

He gets to know his crew and basically any people he’s working with. I know it’s basically an opposite of what he says about barrel gangs, but hear me out.

The main reason why Kaz was able to know that Big Bolliger was a traitor is because he knew that Bol was lazy. And knowing what he did in the "Crow club" it would be hard to know if he was lazy or just relaxed while on the job. Kaz knew that he was lazy - he took time to know the guy.

And also the thing that makes Kaz's plans good is that he keeps in mind all his crew's bad habits and vulnerabilities and plots around them. Its really easy to see that if you look at Jesper.

He keeps in mind that Jesper is late and that he can accidentally give up important info. We see that clearly in the beginning of the book. During the “set the wolf free” plan he made sure to tell Jesper the “wrong” time so that he would “be late” and free the animals at the right time. He knew Jesper would(or could) give up info by accident so he took precautions(saying this again: no one arranges an extra ship just to gather in front of it)

And we also have it in the end of CK.

I think both Inej and Jesper had been told the wrong time. Kaz knew that Dunyasha would be there, so he added some time for Inej to fight her. He talks with Jesper about kergud(I have no idea how to spell that, sorry) and also adds time for that fight. He might have actually putted the wyvil it Jespers pocket(as I do not remember Jes actually putting it there, or mb he just made sure it was there).

I mean, it would have been weird if there would be just the sound of one shot fired, but after the siren it would sound better.

When Kaz told Dregs that he won't be their father, he meant it, your father doesn't know you that well, but your sneaky annoying little sibling does.

i just don’t think “is dude gender neutral” is that productive of a conversation because a word can be gendered and still used regardless of gender. i call my male friends girlypop and my female friends man but i don’t think anybody would agree that those are somehow not gendered terms.

the real question is just “would you be willing to apologize and stop using a word if somebody told you it made them uncomfortable?” the answer to which in a surprising number of cases is no mostly because it seems like overall ppl r more upset abt getting accused of transphobia than they are abt being transphobic

what they dont tell you about adulthood is that it’s startlingly easy to go long periods of time without having any fun at all not even a little bit. btw this causes ur brain to try to kill you with knives and hammers.

Are you cool about trans people who don’t physically transition? Are you cool with trans people who transition in unconventional ways? Are you cool with trans people who you perceive as having an appearance that doesn’t align with their gender? Are you cool about trans people who have complex relationships to gender? Are you?

It's interesting to me how Christopher was so present in Buck's journey to his queer awakening, despite not appearing in the episode at all. Buck, Bothered & Bewildered was told exclusively from Buck's POV, and Christopher was everywhere. Even though we didn't see him once.

Eddie needing a babysitter so he could hang out with Tommy. Chris spending time with Tommy. Chris telling Buck how cool Tommy is. Tommy — basically still a stranger — reassuring Buck of his singular place Christopher's life.

And season 7 started with Buck and Chris in a very pointed, decidedly parental way. Interesting how they're weaving this all together.

canon lines from s4/5 that i think we should go a little berserk about again:

  • "i can know weird stuff too!!"
  • "if that's how you feel - how they made you feel - then you have every right to say so"
  • "show off" "i had to do it" "no, i know you did"
  • "it's like the universe is screaming at you and you refuse to listen." "the universe does not scream"
  • "there was construction on sunset, had to take a detour"
  • "Just make sure you're following your heart, not christopher's"
  • "I kinda lost it when I told him you got shot"
  • "you act like you're expendable but you're wrong" (lmao obviously i don't think we ever forgot that one)
  • "He takes christopher there all the time, got the place memorised"
  • "You need to tell me if something's wrong"
  • "Sorry about the mess but i guess it's your mess now"
  • "ice goes on the eye, bud"
  • "you don't need to pretend with me"
  • "buck, you need to move on. i have"
  • "i misunderstood the assignment"
  • "shouldn't it be when you're at your worst, they're at their worst, you have every reason to give up and you still want to try again"
  • "isn't that what we all want in a partner? knowing that they have your back?"
