mentor/mentee vibes (because ur worth it–)

aka i really love the energy of this dynamic, but unfortunately this whole effort turned into me typing down actual dialogue that happened in my car while my poor father tried to teach me how to drive. but they make for fun threads! bon appetit!

from the mentor.

  • “ you’re doing it wrong. ”
  • “ would you like me to show you how to do it? ”
  • “ that… that’s not how you do it. ”
  • “ maybe this mentoring stuff requires patience that i don’t have. ”
  • “ keep doing it like that, and you’ll end up hurting yourself. ”
  • “ correct me if i’m wrong, but that’s not how i showed you to do it, is it? ”
  • “ okay, alright, look at me. you looking? do it exactly like i’m doing it. ”
  • “ move your feet, come on, you’ve got to move if you don’t want to end up flat on your ass again! ”
  • “ look… it’s progress, yeah? you’re better than you were before. ”
  • “ don’t beat yourself up; it’s a tricky move, nobody gets it right the first time. ”
  • “ okay, let’s… let’s try a different tactic. ”
  • “ you’re overthinking it. don’t think; just be in the moment. ”
  • “ stop, stop… alright. looking back on what you’ve just done, what do you think i’m going to say? ”
  • “ there’s definitely plenty of room for improvement. ”
  • “ ah… god, okay, don’t cry… it’s not as bad as it looks, you’re really not as bad at this as you think! ”
  • “ we’ll get there together. ”
  • “ okay. time for a break, yeah? let’s stop for now, catch a breath, we can come back to it later. ”
  • “ you obviously don’t enjoy any of this; why do you want me to teach you so badly? ”
  • “ i could teach you, if you’d like? ”
  • “ come on, like i showed you, remember? ”
  • “ feet apart, hands up; anticipate your opponent’s movements! ”
  • “ alright… don’t think about getting hit. this isn’t a fight. it’s a dance. you move in response and in anticipation of your opponent. ”
  • “ who the hell taught you to do that?! ”
  • “ that wasn’t terrible! you didn’t butcher it this time! ”
  • “ wake up. wake up, come on, up and at ‘em. you said you wanted to learn, so come on. up you get! ”
  • “ that was good! hell, that was brilliant! you knocked me off my feet! good job! ”
  • “ you need to stop worrying about hurting me. you gonna apologize and pay the hospital bills of whatever bad guy you go against next time? ”
  • “ i’m proud of you. ”
  • “ you’re doing great! “

from the mentee

  • “ can you teach me how to do that? “
  • “ i did it! “
  • “ okay, there’s no need to be dramatic, i wasn’t that bad! “
  • “ i AM trying. “
  • “ oh god, oh, i’m so sorry! did i hurt you? “
  • “ i need your help with this. okay? i can’t do this alone. “
  • “ you’re the expert, right? “
  • “ i’ve seen you fight; i wanna be as good as you! “
  • “ people’s lives are at stake if i lose. their blood’s gonna be on my hands, and it’ll be on yours, too, if you don’t help me. “
  • “ quit yelling at me, i’m trying my best! “
  • “ i’m doing it exactly like you told me to, and i’m still not getting it right. “
  • “ i don’t need a break! i need to keep going until i get this right! “
  • “ show me how you did it. “
  • “ i don’t know how. and you do. all i’m asking is for a few hours of training… please? “
  • “ that’s it. i quit! “
  • “ you’re a terrible teacher, you know that? “
  • “ you said you’d teach me. and i’m here to learn. so let’s go already. “
  • “ what’s the point?! i’m useless at this! “
  • “ this is pointless, i’m never going to be ready! “

Tomorrow we can be on our way to anywhere in the world, with enough money to live however we like. Given where we was when we started, some people might even call that a success. ANNE BONNY & JACK RACKHAM, SEASON 3

"I didn't realise you guys were together." (from Mablung)

"We're not." she quickly corrected. "It is out of necessity, nothing more." Laurelin shot a warning look at the Sinda, silently daring him to push her on the subject.

Beleg claimed to love her - he had said it many times already - but Laurelin could not help but believe his vision was simply clouded by the joy of fatherhood, by the love for his daughter. He did not truly love her, and how could he? Her feelings for Beleg were not much clearer. She certainly cared for him, but even a lukewarm sentiment such as that was hard for her to admit.

Laurelin looked away from Mablung, turning her gaze to Beleg as he dozed in a rocking chair beside the fire, Amardil sleeping peacefully in his arms. Warmth blossomed in her chest, and she didn't notice as her expression softened and a faint smile tugged at her lips.

MAEDHROS ;;

His body hurt, not that he knew why— there were some faint scars, some even not so faint, but no open wounds. Just the simple movement of flexing his fingers left him with a thoughtful frown. It shouldn’t feel like that, should it? He scrunched his nose with a huff. Memory like sand through his fingers, there was nothing left beside faint glimpses too quick to truly understand. A strange push and pull, now outside of the gates of that immaculate white city, he no longer wanted to go further. It felt sickening. Fingertips ran over the collar of his robe. Something made his spine prickle.

Turning away, he looked farther down the road out into the wilds as his hands found his pockets. There were people traveling it seemed, that might serve him better anyways; better than the anxiety this place seemed to cause. Gaze flicking one direction and then the other, his ears shifted down, though he was silent as he turned to meet someone else on the road.

“Ah… Is there anywhere else to go other than— well, here?”

"Valinor still has its woods and wilds," she assured him. "In most senses, it has not changed all that much since last we were here, but there certainly are quite a few more people." Laurelin stepped closer to her eldest brother, removing the hood of her cloak and looking up at him with a teary smile.

She had been reborn only months ago, and she knew all too well how difficult the adjustment could be. Old wounds still ached, despite the evidence being erased by death and rebirth. There had been comfort in the familiarity of her scars. For thousands of years they had been a part of her - proof of what she had been through and proof of what she had survived. Now they were gone, her body healed. It almost made her miss that old, sickly, tired frame that she had once inhabited. Almost. She was adjusting.

"My home is not far from here. No one else will be there, it will be quiet." When she heard Maedhros would be reborn soon, she sent Gil-galad and their children to stay with his own parents for a few days.

"It is good to see you, Nelyo," she wanted to reach for him, to hug him - but she restrained herself, instead managing a small, gentle smile. She did not want to overwhelm him. "I have missed you so very much."

His thoughts were twisting, and yet they were empty; left to pick through the strings and shambles of memory and ideas without even a concept of what he wanted to know. Everything, really. He could remember her, of course he could: they were family. It was just that a nagging feeling remained— sickening —when he looked back at that city. Familiar and frightening in the same breath. He rubbed the heel of his hand against his eyes before looking back to her. It was strange, the loss of personality replaced with confusion and fear.

“There are a lot of people…”

Though awkward, her smile was returned. It was good to see her, truly, but the fog and missing pieces in his mind felt overwhelming and saddening. His smile was small, but well meaning, turning away from the city to look at her instead— it was easier to focus on Laurelin. Though, Nelya tilted his head at her words,

“Your house? We don’t live at our house?”

Something about the thought made his skin itch. He blinked. His brothers weren’t here: only Laurelin. Perhaps worse was a nagging feeling that he understood it. His hands were quick to find his pockets, that awkward yet somewhat alarmed smile. Nothing was quite right.

“It’s good to see you too, sister.”

Nelya took a few steps down the path, closer to her, though his gaze wandered farther down.

“So… you live alone now?”

"Not alone," Laurelin shook her head. "Gil-galad and I-" she paused, looking up at her brother. Her own time in the Halls of Mandos had been a blur, the memories foggy and muddled, as if they had been nothing more than a strange dream. It was likely he knew nothing of what had happened to her after his death. The realization made her heart ache. So much had changed, so much time had passed. They might as well have been strangers now, far from the siblings they had once been.

"I married Gil-galad a couple of centuries after the War of Wrath. We had two children - twins." Laurelin explained. She did not meet Nelya's eyes, unsure of what he would think of the news of his newfound brother-in-law. She did not go into further details; leaving out the story of how she had been gravely injured in the war, and had awoken from unconsciousness to learn that she was alone. Maedhros was dead. Maglor had disappeared. It was not his fault, she reminded herself. She took a deep breath.

"Once we were both reborn, we decided to build our own home near Amil - she lives in a smaller cottage now, though our old home still stands. I have not returned to see it yet."

It was best to take it slow, she had learned.

As Laurelin led them along the path, they soon came to a beautiful cottage, tucked within a small grove of trees near the coastline. "We lived near the sea in Lindon," she explained - Laurelin had never liked the water. "I'll admit, even I grew accustomed to the sound of the waves. Gil-galad and I couldn't imagine living too far inland now."

muses asking each other about the people they love.

note this was written about romantically entwined muses but platonic love also applies! ask about the receiver's friends as much as about their partner(s) <3
  • "How did you two meet?"
  • "Do you love them?"
  • "When can I meet them?"
  • "I've never seen them as happy as they are when they're with you."
  • "How long have you known them?"
  • "[Name] has told me a lot about you."
  • "You two were made for each other."
  • "I didn't realise you guys were together."
  • "So are you gonna introduce me to your boyfriend/girlfriend/partner?"
  • "You seem happier with them."
  • "Wait... are you two...?"
  • "They won't shut up about you, you know."
  • "So you're the famous [name]."
  • "Do you miss them when they're away?"
  • "How do you guys basically never argue?"
  • "You must trust them a lot."
  • "What is it about [name]?"
  • "You've been through a lot together."
  • "You must miss them."
