for real I’m gonna be so down when it’s revealed xephos isn’t the master

it was true before lalnable was even an established character I mean that plot point was literally boxed up waiting to be presented for our amusement and it’s probably not going to happen. it would have been so perfect and easy. I swear this isn’t my colossal desire for a yoglabs return I honestly think that would have been the best course of action

but of course if needed we can always just... forget canon......

very small heads up if you’re looking to enter the new US store opening contest

entering means they’re legally able to use your entry (and name) for promotion on the yogscast’s site and social media, no compensation.  this isn’t a disaster loophole or trap like the whole asos contest where you gave your rights to receive compensation from merchandise, just keep that in mind that you need to be comfortable with your legal name being shared to a very large number of people, and it’s open ended on what “promotional purposes” is as it doesn’t specify promotional for the contest alone.

99.95% chance it’s not shady but it’s very important for artists to practice looking at terms and conditions for things like contests.

Regarding #kin

Okay, I'm gonna be "that guy".

Please be aware that many artists do not want you to discuss anything kin related in tags of their art.  For some, tagging #kin is acceptable but beyond that is disrespectful as hell, and you should not be doing it without asking first, or looking for an indication on their blog.  90% of artists do in fact look at tags and reblogs of their work, they will see it and if you don't want to be a jerk then you'll pay attention to why this can make them uncomfortable or angry.

Drawn art is an expression of the person creating it, it's a wholly personal thing whether it's fanart, commissioned, original.  It's the visualization of the connection an artist has to the topic, you are more than welcome to view it and for it to bring you pleasure as much as it did for us to draw it! It's very flattering.  However, when you discuss the work as if the subject inside is yourself, you're taking away from the bond the artist has with it and moving the topic onto you, as if the artist has drawn it for you.  This feeling is extremely difficult to describe if you don't do visual or written artwork, you have to trust us on this.  Artists can draw for individuals and audiences, but inside their art is still their bond to something they love or care about, you don't get to break that by inserting yourself as the actual subject of said drawing.  As if the work is of you.  The artist doesn't know you, they did not draw it for you to claim as yourself, you can feel that way but you don't get to make them uncomfortable by having them see it.

If you're okay with people tagging and discussing kin things in your art, that's absolutely fine.  But people need to be aware that is not the case for a lot of people, and because it's impossible to police, assume it's not okay and keep your comments to unconnected posts.

Was it hard transitioning from pencil drawing and sketches to digitally drawing?

Avatar

hmmm, not really since I didn’t draw before I got a tablet? I think my first one was around 2006 but I was only sort of in to drawing, I had the basic skills on paper every kid had from doodling pokemon so it was more of a toy to muck around with. I only started drawing seriously as in “oh maybe I should do this for a job” in 2009 so I had a year of traditional art classes in high school for 2D but for the most part for me it’s always been digital.  I can still do pencil, it feels kinda awkward but since I’ve started using a cintiq it’s been less weird.

I don’t ever draw in public though like if I were to go to an artist meet I’d be completely useless because I don’t know how to doodle on paper LOL

tips/pointers on shading?

MY FAVOURITE TOPIC YES I could go on for years about shading ok. um some super general ones but these can be greatly expanded upon if you want

- understanding form is everything, and it’s easier than you’d think.  I guarantee that if you’re already drawing with the basics of breaking down people into geometric objects then you’ll have no problem, it’s just a lot more… rounding. trace the contours of your face with your thumb, these are still primary shapes but smoothed over and shade will still play across them the same way

- light spills. imagine light as a liquid or aerosol… ugh that one would take a long time to explain on how I picture it and I’d need example pics. just take my word for it unless you want elaboration

- for the love of god don’t be afraid to cover half of the subject in shade. don’t keep darkness to edges so it won’t get in the way of your flats and details, it’s going to make the whole thing look like someone is using rub n buff

- generally more shade = more drama, especially in the face even if you’re not backlit. features and muscles tense and create larger pits/swells which leaves more space for spots of darkness. it can still be a peaceful non-dramatic scene with lots of shading though

- old advice but don’t shade with black, don’t shade with burn tool, only in very specific circumstances that 99.5% of the time you will not be using

- I don’t see people mention this one but with cel shading, when you’re deciding the light sources and figuring out where the initial shading should be, don’t keep your flat colours on, shade with your sketch/lineart on white canvas.  it’s much easier to see what you’re actually doing with no visual distractions or illusions you’d get with combining dark colours etc.

- you can use dark purple-blue when you’re testing out where those sources would fall, it seems to stand out really well and is sort of the default colour for real life shading. I use vriska’s blue since it’s on my swatches already and it works great

- use multiply when doing the tests as mentioned above, but there’s way better layer settings to use for your final work, in sai ‘lumi & shade’ is super strong and suits a lot of pieces with bold colour. if you’re using mostly mid tones with some bright (no dark) then you can use ‘shade’, mid tones with some darker colours can be 'overlay’, if you have a wide range of tones then multiply is still your best bet for good coverage of all of them. experiment, it doesn’t take long!

there’s more but this is already long!!! yup

How do you start an illustration?

Avatar

this is definitely different for everyone, but I’ll share mine though I wouldn't recommend it if you’re new to drawing because it’s a bad habit.  normally I don’t even start drawing until I have a very clear image of what I want in my head, particularly the body expression and position of camera since it’s fairly easy to modify facial expression once you've already got the rest of it blocked in. do you want the camera overhead, below, pick a point early and consider the mood and how the perspective will help. once I've decided on everything THEN I start sketching, for me this bypasses the thumbnail step because I've already considered all the possible angles and placement in my head… if that makes sense. I do a lot of storyboards to songs in my head to pass the time while I’m walking or on the bus so I’m sure that’s shaped how I think about composition. for somebody starting out I’d suggest doing thumbnails out on paper/tablet for a better comparison, again basically all professionals do proper thumbnails but I’m too lazy.

my minor is in yoglabs architecture and history but my major is multi-universe clone theory specializing in “the lalna effect”

I have a lot of diagrams AMA

eh I’ve been sitting on them but I guess now is an okay time to share these, it’s a selection of clean yoglabs screenshots if you wanna use them for reference or out of interest.  some of the textures are weird because a resource pack needed to be hastily made from scratch, coal ore and green wool should be gray metal etc. but you get the gist of rooms. enjoy!

can we use your art for icons if we give you credit?

anything that I haven’t initialed with TL you are welcome to use as icons/banners without visible credit, though if you want to that’d be cool!  if it’s initialed (I try to hide it so do take a look) please don’t use it at all.  basically the three things you can’t do with my art

1) repost to tumblr. you can repost on another site if you link back here

2) say you made it, if somebody asks you gotta tell them where it’s from

3) sell it, sell any portion of it, or gain revenue, this should be obvious

if it becomes a big issue in the future I may change this stuff but honestly I don’t care that much, everything is for fun
