re: nintendo and pricing stuff.
Very excited about the hardware and software and subsequently very disappointed with the pricing and a lot of the response to the pricing.
My controversial take is most AAA games aren't worth 50 because most of them are bland commercial homogenized dreck that sells spectacle over good design and writing. There are obvious exceptions, but big publisher games are so bad right now. My god.
Nintendo is, to me, one of the exceptions. They don't make games with strong writing, obviously, but they make great games with so many great design concepts you can summarize in an elevator pitch. They have so many ridiculous business practices, but generally it's been worth sticking around because the software they make has always just been fun. Friend codes? Yeah, this sucks, but at least I get to play Mario Kart.
Now my fun is finishing my backlog because they are high on bathsalts if they think I'm paying 80 dollars (before taxes!) for donkey kong.
And it's depressing, but I think it's going to work. For all the backlash I see, most of it is submissive and not flat out rejection. Even the harshest criticisms seem to come with a twinge of "this is happening to me" as opposed to a middle finger it deserves. The marketing data is out there and people have been paying 100 dollars for games for years now so long as it comes with enough doohickeys that'll end up in a shoebox or even just digital doohickeys that don't even exist.
And nintendo has always had a Disney like fanatacism, but now we also live in a world where playing Nintendo games is almost like a fashion statement. It's not just for dweebs to argue about. It's actually cool to like nintendo. People rush to draw, cosplay, stream, make videos, draw and create porn of the latest directs. People who sleep in don't want you to spoil the directs because they want to go into watching the commercials blind.
There's a fomo and social incentives attached to consuming the latest media that wasn't nearly prevalent just a console ago. As I type this my eyes are rolling so far in the back of my head I can see my repressed memories, but to put it simply, Nintendo makes games people want to post about.
I hope I'm wrong, but we live in a world where people are willing to pay 15 dollars every day to doordash a 5 dollar coffee. We live in a world where the PS5 is outperforming the PS4 when there's nothing to play on it! I suspect people are already comfortable enough buying 200 dollar CEs and will trip over themselves to make sure they're able to participate in the online discussions, and streams, and videos, and memes. Ken Kutaragi was simply ahead of his time when he said he wanted people to work a second job to get a PS3.
The funniest thing about this how this affecting Trump's approval rating and the infighting I'm seeing in conservative circles by self proclaimed alpha males that want to let everyone know how much they like daddy trump stepping on them with his tariff boots by yelling at traitors who are upset their treats are getting more expensive. I want to live in the stupid future where my entire youtube feed are thumbnails that say "How Nintendo ended Trump's presidency"
