Hey! I am an incoming student of Class of 2018 who is from Korea. Do you have some recommendations about the preparation before arrival?

Hey there, congratulations and welcome to Smith! ^^ During summer break, you can blissfully spend your time at home doing things you actually want to do. I, for one, spent my after-graduation time in last year traveling in Europe, reading fun books, watching various series of movies, and the most importantly, staying with my family. (For readings, Smith has an annual recommendation for incoming students. Check this website to know your book for this year: http://www.smith.edu/student-life/for-new-students/summer-reading)

Beyond freely enjoying yourself, you should book the flight to U.S at your earliest convenience. This website contains important informations about the airport and ground transportation to Smith: http://www.smith.edu/about-smith/visiting-smith/directions

For more programs and seminars for new students, you can check this: http://www.smith.edu/student-life/for-new-students

Hope it helps and enjoy your fantastic summer!

Hello Shengjie! I visited Smith campus this April and was deeply in love with the houses on campus. I will enroll for next year. Could you tell me some detailed things about the location and community of these houses?

Hi, thank you for your question! I am happy that you love Smith and our houses. At Smith, students' living options are varied. There are 35 houses and complexes on campus and each of them has a distinct character in location, size and architectural style. According to location, these houses can generally be divided into four areas. Green St, Center Campus, Quad Area and Elm St. Houses in Green St area are some of the oldest but the closest to classrooms, gym and Paradise Pond. Center Campus houses are the most eclectic of campus. Quad is kind of far from campus center but has the energetic, welcoming and largest community. Beyond this, social life in houses is an important part of life at Smith. Some particular appeals of house events include "Big Sister-Little Sister", the Senior Banquet, House Tea (on every Friday) and so on.

And, you can check this website out to get further info: http://www.smith.edu/reslife/houses.php

The picture is the poster of An Evening of Two One-Act Plays which opened at the end of February and returned at March 6, 7, 8.

It was my first time to run a show as a lighting board operator at Smith. For lighting designers, it had a lot to happen in little time. They didn't start programming of the lighting until the weekend before the show opened. It's a lot of hours in a short period of time. Tech designers and crew spent twelve hours on Saturday and Sunday and then at least five hours on weekdays working on those shows.

Though occasionally strongly stressful, the experiences have always been positive for me. There was a start and I could keep going on.

One week ago, I watched the groundbreaking BROADWAY MUSICAL AMERICAN IDIOT at Umass-Amherst. I’m not a big fan of Green Day, but hey I don’t have to be actually. Because the play(or song) itself has a lot of meaning and people will associate it with themselves - that’s why I say it is GREAT.

The song Boulevard of Broken Dreams is my favorite. It is kind of bloody brilliant and depressing, but at the same time peaceful. It has so much emotion and sentimental value to let you think…

The play reminds me of the first time when I listened to Green Day’s song. At that time, I was a fifteen-year-old girl and a real beginner of punk. I listened to numbers of rock/punk bands afterwards and thought that Green Day is kind of pop, and not that punk. But so what, from my point of view punk is more of an attitude than of a style.

"In the falling quiet, there was no sky or earth, only snow lifting in the wind, frosting the window glass, chilling the rooms, deadening and hushing the city." ― Truman Capote

Everyone was insanely busy and living under the shadow of finals during the one-week long reading period. I went out of the Neilson Library as a breath.

The snow was endless. It covered the land as far as I could see. All the world was completely white and the snowflakes were coming down as big as popcorns. When I walked around Seelye Hall, the man who was sweeping the snow said to me:"Welcome to the wonderland!" Warm words from people who I don't know were like sunlight shining in the gloomy sky.

The photo was taken outside the Neilson Library in the snow.

NOV/22/2013 HAPPY JULIA CHILD DAY!

Lovely dinner is waiting for us after a long day. Food offered on Julia Child Day is like ultimate stress reliever when almost everyone is insanely busy and living under the great shadow of final exams.

At night, after meeting with my First Year Seminar professor, I had dinner with her in Cutter-Ziskind House. Chatting with my professor beyond class about novels we both love, her experience about writing beautiful English articles as a foreigner and the deep miss of Israel are memorable for me, both as a freshman who is struggling with college-level academic writing and as an International student who misses her sweet home sometimes...
