I wanna talk about Mo Ran and Choice (or lack there of) in 2Ha
I was rereading and came across that scene in Farm Arc where Ling’er asks what does Mo Ran like and he was so taken aback by the realization that this is the first time someone has asked what he likes or wants. Meatbun then goes on to say how since he was a very poor child, he didn’t have the luxury of choice. This is understandable and adds tragedy to already tragic character, a needed element in a redemption arc like his.
But what actually made me lose what last drops of serotonin I had was when I realized how this pertains to the previous lifetime and The Flower. Also how it shows that Taxian Jun’s tragedy also revolves around not having a choice.
What The Flower does is essentially amplifying whatever hatred or negative feelings he has, making it worse as it goes. In an ordinary scenario a normal person would have a choice between ignoring / suppressing or even resolving that anger but the Flower takes those choices away and distorts his perception of things.
Mo Ran of 0.5 timeline was robbed of the right of choosing what he could or could not feel and in extension, express.
the Flower is taking away his ability at controlling or resolving his feelings and directly influencing thoughts that otherwise wouldn’t even have occurred in the first place.
Mo zongshi grew from a choiceless child to a man who could decide for his own self both in terms of free will and resources. But Taxian Jun grew from that poor child to a man stripped of even the ability to experience his own feelings and think his own thoughts. And to make it worse, the last unaffected decision he took, his final choice made of free will, was to take the Flower, essentially signing away his mind, in place of Chu Wanning. And his final coherent thought was, “I’m going to disappoint you shizun.”
