back to school! here’s a giant massive study guide organized by mercury placements! i really don’t expect these tips to work perfectly for everyone, but if you’re having trouble studying, maybe switching up your strategy could help💛

aries - quick and decisive, you feel better when you see immediate results. you might feel most at home in areas of study that are more concrete and goal-oriented than exploratory. for example, STEM or languages rather than literature or philosophy. regardless, i prescribe the reward system - stick a piece of candy on every paragraph and eat it when you get there, a treat for every 10 flashcards, every solved problem, etc. rather than timed breaks, consider challenging yourself to x math problems, y pages until you get to take a break. try to game-ify studying and make it performance based, and make sure you reward yourself for progress!

taurus - i think a field with obvious real-world applications would suit you. engineering, economics, public policy. i do not recommend the reward system for you lol, i don’t trust y’all to follow it. instead, i recommend you build yourself the perfect environment for success. put yourself in an environment that screams learning, that makes you feel all fancy and scholarly. do not study in your room. find the campus’s most impressive library spot and bring your colored pens and cute notebooks. make your study blogs, pinterests, inspiration boards. do it for the aesthetic™ highschoolers: i realize this is harder for you. i’d prefer you didn’t study in your room, but if you must, please at least don’t study on your bed if at all possible. study at a desk, or at the kitchen table before parents come home

gemini - now, you do need timed breaks, you distractable lovelies. i think you would feel more comfortable in exploratory fields of study, where there is no right answer and you can let your mind wander at will. if you’ve chosen something more concrete, though, you need to pay real close attention to when you’re getting side-tracked. pay attention to how much time it’s taking you to complete problems/read chapters and build in breaks. it would probably benefit you to work through problem sets with classmates, who will likely have little patience for your what-ifs. studying with people will also give you the opportunity to talk it out when you get stuck. highschoolers: i know it’s tough for a lot of you to meet up with pals. my little sister sits on skype with her pals while she does homework, perhaps you could try this?

cancer - a memorization-based field like medicine or language might suit you folks. you’re a bit of a perfectionist sign - you feel uncomfortable starting until you know where you’re going. i recommend you lovelies stock the fuck up on scratch paper (because i am extremely anxious about the environment, i always saved one-sided printouts i didn’t need anymore). write down every dumb thought you have. no clue how to outline this essay? just write down ideas until you get there. no clue how to solve this math problem? start it! get it wrong a few times! i know you like to protect unfinished work and not show it to others, but i urge you to try getting comfortable with unfinished and unsatisfactory work. you don’t get partial credit if you turn in nothing, you don’t learn anything if you don’t give it a shot. also, if you are in a STEM field, show your work - yes, even the fuckups. look, i used to grade homework and it’s fine to show minimal work if you got the question right, but if you got it wrong i need to know why so i can help you (or more realistically tell the professor they fucked up teaching this concept and all their students got it wrong). if you are in the humanities, meet with your professors often. discuss your essay topics and outlines. they’ll help set you on a good path

leo - you’d probably feel better in a grand, big picture kind of field - art, economics. it’s not a competition, but i know you’re gonna treat it like one anyway. so please let that motivate you for good. be visibly studying - post up on the first floor of the library, claim your favorite table, use distinctive looking study materials. study in public, where others can see how diligent you are. their eyes on you will motivate you to do what you came to do. the other thing with y’all is that i really need you to learn to check your work. another proofread, another look at that problem, etc. reread that essay and make sure it makes sense, the structure works, you have adequate supporting sources n stuff. something you learn in college is the value of checking your work. it is wild how much that can elevate your score. please always give yourself time to do this. highschoolers: ok so studying in public is a harder ask from you, so i fully endorse you being the world’s most obnoxious social media user and posting evidence of your studying on every available platform. start a studyblr? 

virgo - you might feel best in a details-oriented field like STEM or law, where the weeds are the whole point. i suggest y’all write everything down. e v e r y t h i n g. i trust y’all to come up with an organization schema that works for you. everything the professor puts on the board goes in your notes, no exceptions. get one of those pens that records the lecture while you write (some of these are so advanced omg, my friend had one and it could play the part of the lecture from when you wrote that particular phrase, it’s wild). i do trust you to be able to hold all that info in your brain, but i also think it will make your life so much easier to have a quick-access guide written by yourself on hand at all times. you’re another sign that needs to outline your essays and show all work. it’ll help you organize your many, many thoughts. sometimes y’all have trouble with big picture stuff, so i suggest summarizing your notes as an exercise in retaining those top-line insights

libra - i think you’re well-suited for fields of study that focus on people (the humanities as a whole), but also in general i think academia suits you. research, libraries, dedicating your life to the pursuit of knowledge, traditional techniques, etc. you don’t truly know it until you can teach it, so definitely look into becoming a TA or tutor. help your friends and classmates out. it’ll help to study with other people, and surrounding yourself with smart, dedicated folks is only going to help. i suggest you try to separate your studying from the rest of your life, though. the hard part about school (especially college) is that it gets hard to let the studying go and do something else, so you wind up with this cloud of “i should be studying” anxiety wherever you go. set concrete goals, try setting a schedule, and intentionally build in those times when you are absolutely allowed to completely forget about school and do something else. please don’t work through your meals unless you absolutely have to

scorpio - you’re all about investigative fields of study - my scorpio stellium pal is in chemistry grad school! STEM, history, philosophy suit you. it would benefit you to get in the zone to study. post up in the library and drown in those books. long, uninterrupted sessions probably work best for you. but! please remember that essays written in one sitting are not your best work. i suggest separating your study needs into categories. 1. gather resources, 2. outline, etc etc. it’s ok, you don’t have to finish stuff in one sitting. you can take multiple days to do a problem set, write an essay. you might be prone to leaving it to the last minute and then powering through. instead, start when you get the assignment and do a bit everyday. it’s not easy for your brain to switch gears though, so try to plan one topic per study session - for the next hour do chemistry and don’t worry about anything else, rather than multitasking on multiple assignments. also, please do not tutor unless you can absolutely trust yourself not to crush those poor kids’ spirits. instead, you’d make a great research assistant.

sagittarius - constantly stimulating fields will work for you. get on the bleeding edge of something: computer science, politics, marketing, something that’s fast-paced and always changing. sit the fuck down for 10 uninterrupted minutes i am begging you! you need timed breaks as well but for you it’s not about cutting yourself off from getting distracted. it’s about forcing yourself to focus for 20 minutes with the promise that when you finish that you can goof off for another 10. write stuff down! trust me it’s a lot easier to organize things when they are on pieces of paper and not in your brain. i know it all makes sense in your head, so go ahead and write down everything you’re thinking and then when it’s time to write a paper on it, it’s all right there. there are a lot of online tools that can help - like list-making websites, browser extensions that save sources, mind-mapping websites (!!!!). take advantage of the tools available to get your thoughts organized!

capricorn - you’d do well in fields where force of will is helpful, and you can argue into a right answer. literature, philosophy, anything interpretive where you can have your own point of view and argue it. you’re another perfectionist, and i need you to focus on the journey and not the result. do the due diligence. write down every step. you’re not learning if you’re rushing to the answer. when you read your sources, do it with the assignment in mind. bookmark and write down quotes you think will help you argue a point in the future. it’s good to have too much and have to edit it down. this also helps you pay attention to the text. you’re prone to goal-oriented tasks like “read this chapter.” please remember that the goal is to learn and that you may be able to breeze through that chapter real quick, but it does nothing to help you unless you understand it and can remember what it was about. you’re doing yourself a disservice by studying to check things off a list and not studying to understand.

aquarius - you need a field of study you can dedicate yourself too. it’s just not gonna work to force yourself into the field you think is more profitable, or practical. the aquarian mind wants what it wants and it can’t be denied. you’ll work best with meaningful fields of study. no shallow marketing or business degrees for y’all. anyway, try to study for love of the subject. try to incorporate it into other aspects of your life. philosophize for fun over the dinner table. see if you can mathematically calculate the number of bedsheets you’d need to turn the side of the science building into an epic mural. make the learning fun. going your own way is a strength. maybe you were taught to solve a math problem this way, but you think you can make it work a different way. try it! flexibility is honestly such a strength. basically, do it the way you think will work for you, regardless of what you’e been told. another sign that would really benefit from just trying a bunch of stuff out until you settle on a strong method/essay topic/what have you

pisces - you’ll work well with fields that activate that empathy and subjectivity: literature, art, philosophy, writing. make to-do lists! break your projects down into the concrete steps it will take to complete them, turn into a to-do list, and get to work! working with people will keep you on track. try to visualize your end result and keep that in mind as you work. you tend to get lost along the way and end up with essays that start with one argument and end with another. if it helps, write down the overall goal and keep it in front of you while you work. you need to gather your sources before you write the essay. it sometimes works for other people to start in on their argument and look for supporting quotes as they go, but this will not work for you. in the process of gathering those quote, you’ll change your mind! so make sure you’re bookmarking useful quotes as you read, and then look at them to decide what your argument will be. this way, you won’t get stuck along the way.

CENTERING — meditative visualization for centering oneself and gathering lost energy bits that are detached from you, eventually after feeling extreme emotions or performing magick. find and feel your inner center. become aware of your magical existence. can also be visualized with space: planets and stars that revolve around you, the sun, the center of your own galaxy. grounding before centering is recommended.

SHIELDING — strong visualization practice for protecting your energies from draining people and their negative energies. good for empaths. can be visualized through all kind of imaginary shields. the most important thing is that in your imagination you are entirely coated with this shield, no matter if you imagine a bright reflecting light around you, or other protecting elements. no cracks, no splits, you need to be completely shielded. practice this daily and keep it up forever.

CLEANSING — energy removing practice for clearing unwanted negative energies or spirits from an object or space by doing a small ritual such as visualization, burning incense, using effective crystals or chanting cleansing mantras, etc. this type of energy work is perfect for making a place or an item spiritually new again.

ENERGY BALLS — physical and mental practice for visualizing a glowing white energy ball (or any other form of visual energy) between the palm of your hands. rub your hands together and concentrate on the friction and warmth and also on the energies which flow from your arms into your slowly forming and growing energy ball. if you feel the distance between your hands is just right and the energy ball is completed give it a last strong input of energy to seal it.

PROGRAMMING — once you’re really comfortable with making an energy ball, you can also program it with an intent. start with deciding on an intent (example: joy) and really fill your energy ball with these feelings (example: joy, happiness, delight, pleasure, fun, cheer and laughter) by literally trying to feel those things as you do it. also, imagine your white energy ball changes its color; use the color you connect the most to this feeling/intent (example: joy - yellow/else).

CHARGING — energy work practice for infusing an object (such as a crystal, water, or other things) with personal or external energies, like a certain intent. this can be achieved either through forming and programming an energy ball and willing it into the object by visualizing and/or embracing it with your hands; or it can be done by simply visualizing that the object is surrounded by bright energetic light (eventually take a color that matches your intent here as well) and will your intent into the object directly. keep up your imagination of the charging until you feel it’s complete.

SENDING ENERGY — energy work practice for sending programmed energy to someone. create and energy ball and program it with your intent (example: i want my friend to be more happy again). use the person or a representation of the person (like a picture) and visualize your energy ball forming a connection to the desired target and then, shooting straight into the person like a laser beam. as soon as the visualized energy has left your hands completely, your friend is charged with the intent.
