Hunter Hayes On Love And Heartbreak

Dating doesn't always come easy—even when you've been nominated for three Grammy's! Country crooner and mega cutie Hunter Hayes let his guard down and shared with Seventeen everything he's learned about love.

On The Girl Who Inspired "Wanted"

Seventeen: What is the story behind your single, "Wanted"?

Hunter Hayes: “Wanted” is about a girl I was friends with, but at the time it was teetering on the edge ofsomething more. I wanted to show her that I really cared about her. “Wanted” was my way of saying, we’re friends and have a great foundation, and this could be something really special.

The song was everything I wanted to say to her, but I chickened out and didn’t play it for her for the longest time! She only recently found out it was about her. Now we’re best friends. We were actually just laughing about it last night.

Willing To Take A Risk For Love

17: What about "Heartbreak"? Is that song about a specific girl too?

Hunter: Yeah, it definitely is. It was my attempt to twist the saying “be mine” into something almost borderline depressing. If you’re going to be somebody’sheartbreak, be mine.

Basically what I was thinking was, I get that this relationship probably won’t work and it’s a bit lofty of me to dream about you and I being together. But on the off-chance that it does work, I’d like to be the one who fought for it and believed in it.

On Being Friends With An Ex

17: Do you think it’s possible to befriends with an ex or someone you used to have strong feelings for?

Hunter: I think it’s healthy. Some time has to pass, but why not be buds? You both had a learning experience and it was hard, and for some people it’s harder than others—I get that.

But what you went through shapes who you are now and who you’re going to be. You can be thankful for that. So even though sometimes it really sucks, you have to look back and be glad for that experience

What he Looks For In A Girl

17: Do you have a girlfriend? What type of girls do you usually crush on?

Hunter: I don’t have a girlfriend. I don’t know if I have a type, but I really like girls who are driven. I really care about music, so I like it when a girl really cares about something too. Whatever it is they are into, I’ll be their biggest fan.

Confidence is a big thing for me too. I struggled with feeling confident for a long time, but I think it’s important to be strong and not compromise for anyone or a relationship—I’m drawn to that.

If Taylor Swift Lives Up To The Hype

17: What was it like touring withTaylor Swift? Did anything about her surprise you?

Hunter: She’s tall! I didn’t realize how short I was until I toured with her. But she’s highly respected in my world as an extremely talented songwriter and an incredible entertainer, and she solidified both of those things. I watched every show, every night. In New York, I joined her, Selena, and James Taylor on stage. It was my first tour with somebody. Not a bad way to start! It was awesome.

The song has given me a false sense of confidence. I’m such a geek. I’m so awkward and weird and shy and quiet. I don’t say these things in the song very well. That’s why I put them in a song. But I’m learning that I should write more songs for the girls that I want to make the message to, because apparently that’s way better than me talking. Because that’s never actually worked. [laughs] But it has taught me how to be honest. The rule of songwriting: say what you want to say, say it again, say it a different way, then say it again.
