Music Spotlight: Tommy Newport

Tommy Newport is a singer, songwriter and producer who first caught the Internet’s attention on the YouTube series COLORS. Born in Manchester, England, Tommy relocated to the US with his family at 6 years old and moved between Dallas and Seattle before settling down in Kansas. He began playing guitar as a teenager and released his debut single “I Forgive You” in the summer of 2018. We had the chance to talk to him about his newest single as well as how he got started so check it out. 

Congrats on the release of your new song! Can you tell us about the inspiration behind Marigold?

Marigold is inspired by the flower itself and growing as a person. It’s about learning the lesson of needing outside sources to grow up in life just like how a flower needs its elements.

How would you describe your sound? Has it changed throughout the years?

My sound is always changing! I still use a lot of similar structuring and production techniques in each track that I feel keep all my songs cohesive and I hope that people can tell right away it’s me. But I like to be different every release, I get worried about being boxed in.

Is there a moment that you consider the highlight of your career up to now?

There are so many! I’ve been releasing music for three years now and I can say it’s felt like a decade and a single minute at the same time, it’s hard to describe. You know those moments you just never forget from your childhood? I remember as a kid when the first iPod touch came out and the ad for it was scored with the coolest song, “Around the Bend,” by The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, and my mind flooded with questions about how that band got to be in this commercial. Cut to this year and I am watching my own ad from Apple and it really felt full circle. There’s many other highlights, but that one felt so specific to my path in life.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I started writing music four years ago. I taught myself how to play guitar and I couldn’t sing at all. I was tone deaf and I had to teach myself how to sing. I taught myself how to record and produce as best as I could and I released a full length project at 17, a year after I began.

Lighting round! Describe each of the following in one word: Who you are, what you value the most, and what you’d be if you were a food item.

I am Tommy Newport, a British/American musician. I value family, friends and loyalty the absolute most, and if I were a food item I would be a croissant.  

What can we look forward to from you next?

There is going to be lots of new music that I am super proud of and excited to release to everyone. And the beginning of a bigger project is hopefully starting very soon.
