"Oh really? Are you sure?" Ruby frowned before pulling out the slip of paper from her skirt pocket, and scanning the words messily scribble across it. "Oh… My bad. Looks like it’s an off day for me."

The fact that she was willingly accepting her mistake tided him over for the moment. He exhaled, and nodded. "Would you mind switching it?" It was less of a 'would you' and more of a 'go change it.' He was never very gifted in humility, so polite conversation was something scarce with him.

"Great choice of words, but how will Georgiana take your snide comments directed at me? Is she talking? I bet just a little visit from me will have her up and about soon enough."

The mention of her name directly, called his attention. He scowled and nearly seethed over. "She doesn't want to see you. Nor will she." He paused. "Please tell me, what exactly did you come here for? To listen to yourself talk, narcissist."

"My feelings are honest and true, if you want to speak to someone who will not tell you what they mean then speak to my sister Elinor. But I am not a liar, if that is what you were thinking." She twisted her lips. "How do you order food on a phone?"

Image

"So your sister is a liar?" He hummed and nodded, "I can see how far loyalty lies in your family." Darcy then looked through his desk, looking for a few menus he had tucked away in his files. "What do you want? Pizza, Italian food, Chinese, what? Name something." He was going to explain it to the over privileged youth in his office as soon as he knew what she wanted.

She glanced down at the order once more and realized that whoever had wrote it might have intentionally wrote it wrong. There were some parts scratched out as if ready to serve then immediately blacked out with everything he didn’t want. “She’s new, as am I but I’m sorry that she got your order wrong. The manager will pay for your meal.”

Image

The last part was something of a surprise, he didn't expect his meal to be paid for but he wasn't going to complain. If that was their policy he was going to see to it that they kept their word. "Thank you." His fingers moved gently onto his lap, tapping for a few moments and wondering if he should speak to her or ignore her. "Your name is Elinor, right?" He looked at the tag on her chest. "Dashwood?"

"It’s not an inconvenience, peach isn’t my thing." Penelope replied as she turned to grab his plate. "Here you are, no harm no foul which means no more temper tantrum and you still give the waitress a nice tip."

He listened to her, lifting an eyebrow but saying nothing as they made the switch. He hadn't planned on leaving the woman a single cent. Rewarding carelessness wasn't exactly something he intended on doing often or at all. If this woman was the sort to think it was okay, then he couldn't help but assume her be too tender hearted. "No." He said simply once he was settled. "I don't praise mediocrity."

Elizabeth stood in the corner with her dear friend Charlotte Lucas, talking about the movie they had just watched. It was a romantic movie, and like all romantic movie they saw, they made fun of it, laughing at the cheesy lines and other such things as they enjoyed a glass of wine. “Remember, when he took her hand-” Elizabeth said, a wide smile spread across her lips as she made hand gestures. “and expressed his undying love for her and she simply replied with “oh my!”” Elizabeth laughed with her friend at the memory when she saw a young man walking over to her sister. “It looks as if Jane may get the same talk rather soon!” She laughed when she looked at the crowd of people and saw another young man, though separate from the first, this man looked rather stern in his appearance and posture. Her laughter faded away as she looked back at her friend. “Who is the rather grumpy man standing in the corner?” She asked, and was told he was Mr. Darcy from Pemberley incorporated. “Oh, but that cannot be him, he doesn’t look like he would accept a thing! He probably goes around, denying everything as nothing matches his personality.” She joked, making herself giggle as she took a small sip of wine.

Darcy seethed and rounded a couch, his fingers then tapped against the leather of the arm rest as waited impatiently. He knew his texts were being ignored and even considered sending an obscene amount of of letters and numbers to the male in order to get his attention. Caroline was nearby, mooning about some few feet from him going on about the how the company needed to instate some stricter policy on finance and how money was spent. Although, it wasn't her place to even make such suggestions -- he didn't dare to disvalue her input. At least, not while Bingley was still in the vicinity. And not out loud.  The brunette he had made previous eye contact with seemed to be as simple as the rest of the frocked up women at the gathering. Possibly, only interested in the free drinks and the late night activities that could take place once everyone disperses at the conclusion of the social.  She laughed far too much. Too loudly. And her friend had a simple look to her.  Not very interesting, to say the least. She reminded him of another woman he had met. The older Dashwood daughter, Elinor. Perhaps, they were both bread from the same education; producing insipid individuals.

"Um… sorry, but I think they might have switched our orders," Lonnie said, tucking a strand of hair behind her ears. She would’ve kept her mouth shut, generally, but this man seemed to be intent on getting his order, and who was she to stop him? "I haven’t eaten any of it, if you just want to take the plate. Unless that’s strange."
image

Hearing the sound of her voice called his attention, it was like a chime or some sort of bell that could become grating on further listening. But regardless, her words were gentle enough. Kind enough even. Turning to get a quick glance at the source, Darcy quirked an eyebrow noticing the intricacy of her hair first. "Mm." He thought for a minute then sighed, returning his attention to the waitress and dismissing her. "I don't like this sort of dish." He thought those words alone would be enough for him to confirm his desire to switch as she had suggested but he continued on. "Yes, well. Let's make the exchange. I can't imagine anything being stranger than having to eat this."

"Are you sure?" lux pulled out the pad tucked into her apron, but she’d forgotten to actually write down his order - she’d just doodled stars and swirls all over it. Sighing, she had to concede that it probably wasn’t what he’d ordered, “yeah, sure - I’ll switch it for you…asshole,” the last part was mumbled under her breath as she turned back to the kitchen.

Image

"I'm positive I would know whether or not I had ordered this atrocity. I don't have a tendency to order things that don't agree with me." Watching her carefully and noticing the shift in her response from being doubtful, to being willing to make the switch, he concluded her carelessness was even unconscious. Not that it was any better. Perhaps, she hadn't been taught to focus her mind on a single task wherever she had been educated. Or maybe, she was even the sort to pay little care towards resources that are meant to be to her benefit thus creating the inattentive young woman before him.

"I’m sorry I couldn’t help but overhear, if that is a blueberry cobbler and you ordered peach then I think we simply were switched."

"I'm not surprised." He scoffed lightly then turned slightly to face her more comfortably. "Perhaps, if you aren't too inconvenienced we could have our orders switched back."

"I’m sorry." Elinor looked at the small slip of paper and reviewed what the other waitress had jotted down. It was illegible to say the least but it looked about what was served. "Can you repeat your order? I don’t think she got it right."

"Hotcakes. No sausage, and honey instead of syrup." He finally glanced up at her recognizing her voice. It wasn't nearly as grating as her sister's but it was as calm as a first grade teacher attempting to put her class to sleep. It was dull.

"Harsh words and yet I still don’t find the true feeling behind them. It’s like you were born to make all your words match the same tone." She quipped, "Why do you think I asked to have a lot of food. I was going to take some back to Margaret."

Image

"Of course you were." He didn't believe a single word she said, at least not any that had any supposed good will to them. If there was anything the young were particularly good at it was lying. And young women were the worst of them. "I'll give you the phone. You order some food, while in the room, and I will pay when they come to deliver it."

Having been abandoned amidst the nearly empty room by Bingley, (only nearly empty for the lack of anything worth valuable interest) to speak to a young woman all the way on the other end of it. Darcy was, already, regretting attending the small social gathering. He looked about himself, silently observing the few people gathered in small clusters chatting away about trivial matters.  Taking out his cell phone, the brunet looked at the time texting the other male.

[Text:] Hurry up.
[Text:] She's not worth your attention. She's not even paying attention. Look. She spends more time looking at her drink than at you. Move. I'm tired of this. I though this was supposed to be work related? Are we still in college?

Glancing back up from his phone, the male looked around again, making brief eye contact with a woman within the room then quickly looked away to his friend again, waiting for him to stop ignoring the buzz he knew he felt in his pocket.
