They had trekked along the forest path for miles, their pace not stopping as they made their way through the trees and more into the city. Armin was surprised that they hadn’t ran into many zombies during their journey, and he didn’t even need to fire a single bullet. He had definitely raised his gun during each time, the metal clicking as his finger trembled on the trigger, but by the time it was ready, Mikasa had already sliced the creatures apart.

It was relaxing, in a way, to be able to travel without having to run into too many dangers.

“I’m fine,” The blond replied, keeping his gun lowered. The sounds of leaves shuffling behind him instantly caught his attention, and like a startled deer, Armin flinched, head shooting upwards as cerulean eyes looked at his surroundings.

From all sides, rotting creatures stumbled towards them, groaning inhumanely as their hunger for human flesh drew them closer to the two. He didn’t even notice the fast, lithe zombie before it nearly snapped at him, disgusting teeth almost biting into his arm. Instantly, the flight technique took over his brain, and the blond soon bolted without a second thought, sprinting through the trees.

A fence lined the border of the trees, standing tall but not enough to impair him from jumping over. That wasn’t going to stop him anyway. Taking a deep breath, Armin leapt, hoping to make it over the wooden structure. His eyes widened as he felt his foot catch the top of the fence, flipping him over and crashing him to the ground, smashing his arm on the rocky ground, his gun sent flying from his grip.

As excruciating pain shot up the length of his arm, he rolled onto his back, biting his lip to try and stop himself from screaming.

Mikasa nodded as he replied, nibbling at her lip. She suddenly whipped around upon hearing noises, seeing the dead slowly shamble out from alleyways, inside buildings, and the woods at the edge of town.

Mikasa didn’t have time to see where Armin went, chopping off the head of two zombies in one strong swing. She killed several more before scaling the side of a small foreign grocery store, climbing onto the roof. Her heart practically stopped, noticing that Armin was gone.

Her eyes searched the horde frantically, which gathered at the base of the building she was on. Tears welled in her eyes. Had he went and hidden in one of the buildings? Mikasa pulled one of her last resort items from her bag, a small can of gasoline, which she uncapped and threw off the side of the building under a vacant car, lighting a flare and throwing it into the gas, causing the car to explode, which distracted the zombies for long enough that she could jump down onto a dumpster on the side of the building and book it through the store, checking everywhere for the blond.

She searched through that store before she began to look in the woods, seeing the fence, and... oh my god. Armin. She jumped over the fence, grabbing him into her arms and cradling him close, beginning to sob.

Stepping back a few centimetres after their embrace, Armin’s smile only grew bigger as Mikasa smiled. Smiled genuinely and happily, despite the circumstances they were placed in. Most of the time, the ravenette looked stoic, but as the blond knew, she definitely wasn’t emotionless. Checking for any signs of the walking dead, he nodded at her words.

“I’m right behind you. Just don’t go too crazy.” He joked quietly, adjusting his grip on the gun.

Mikasa gripped the sword in both hands, grinning a little at Armin’s comment. “I won’t. Come on, we’re nearly there.”

Several miles later, they had finally hit the city limits, starting to get more into the city. Mikasa had killed a few zombies, slathering her body in guts to get the scent on her and be more concealed. She’d tucked her scarf, a present from Eren, away into her bag. There was no way she’d get that messy. So far, Armin hadn’t had to shoot at anything, which Mikasa told him not to do unless he really needed to. “You doing okay, Arm?”

Armin’s gaze hovered towards the path ahead of them, azure eyes trying to pinpoint any rotting creatures shuffling around near the shrubs or trees. At the mention of a bite, he instantly turned back towards her, nodding in understanding. After all, the blond did trust her with the katana after all. It made sense for him to stay back.

Sighing lightly, he felt her hand grasp his cheek, and smiled as she kissed his forehead. Even in the middle of an apocalypse, they could share moments like this, close moments which always brought a smile to the blond’s face. For a few moments, Armin buried his face into the crook of her neck, before pulling back, knowing full well they had to get moving.

“I won’t let you worry. I promise.”

Mikasa couldn’t hear anything coming, staying quiet unless she was speaking to Armin. She smiled softly at Armin after kissing his forehead, feeling his soft breath against her neck. “Good.” She held him for a few seconds before letting to, managing an actual, genuine smile.

“Let’s go, then.” She murmured, grasping the handle of her katana, prepared to take it out and fight whenever it was needed.

“That’s good.” Armin replied, nodding slightly in approval as the ravenette sheathed the sword. He wasn’t a close combat fighter (he’d leave that to people who were stronger than him), but instead, he picked off the disgusting creatures from a distance. The gun, while small, was gripped in his left hand, ready to raise and shoot if a zombie were nearby.

image

“We will find them. I know we will.” He responded, trying to sound confident.

Mikasa nodded, her grip tight on the handle of the katana. “Come on, I’ll lead, you trail behind me from a safe distance. I don’t want you getting bit, after all.” She paused, looking at him through soft gray eyes. She reached forward, grasping his cheek and planting a kiss on his forehead.

“You’re the last thing I have, Armin. I won’t let a single thing get you while I’m still breathing.”

"You'll carry it with you if you want to survive."

Mikasa squeezed the sharp sword in her hand, nodding. “Okay. I’ll use it.” She murmured, sliding it into the sheath at her belt.

“We’ll find our friends, Armin. I won’t stop until we do.”

She was up all night working on some big project for one of her classes. She stuffed her hands into her hoodie pockets as she entered cafe. A familiar voice rang into her ears.

“A large black coffee would be fine.”

Mikasa nodded, getting her what she requested. She paused behind the counter, staring at her cup. Heart pounding, she scrawled down her number on the outside just under Annie’s name, in very small handwriting before filling it up with coffee.

Image

“Here,” She passed it to Annie, exhaling. “On the house.”

“Annie.” Mikasa murmured, standing behind the coffee counter. She hadn’t expected her college classmate to show up here, of all places. Mikasa’s workplace.

          “What would you like?”

"Um, Mikasa, I'd like to ask you about these inventory forms. It's a minor thing, but it might take awhile. Would you like to go grab some lunch while we do discuss them?"

“What are you talking about, inventory forms..?” Mikasa blinked, then shrugged. “Fine, that’s fine. Let’s go look at whatever you’re talking about then.”

“Let’s just say it involved researching Titan biology for long periods of time. It drains every bit of energy you have in you.” He replied, looking thoughtfully at his raven-haired friend. Of course Armin had experienced it first-hand; not only did he see Hanji slump at their desk countless times from exhaustion, he had done it a couple of times himself when he passed out from doing his own work in the early hours of the morning.

Stretching out his arms, trying to remove the slight stiffness in his bones, the blond sighed loudly, nodding in reply to Mikasa. “Sure, why not?”

Mikasa sighed, rolling her eyes. “How is that weirdo scientist still alive? You’d figure they’d have died by now, constantly picking at titans.” Mikasa crossed her arms over her chest.

Image

“Well, let’s go get dinner, maybe that will help get some of your energy back in you. There’s bags under your eyes.”

Avatar

“So you’re finally done helping Hanji with their research...? Have they not passed out from pure exhaustion after working so hard yet?”

Image

Mikasa leaned against the wall, sighing. “Wanna go get dinner with me?”
