For 37 years it’s been up there on the flat roof of Mark Gubin’s building in the flight path of Mitchell International Airport. A sign painted in letters 6 feet tall tells people arriving here by air: “WELCOME TO CLEVELAND.”

“There’s not a real purpose for having this here except madness, which I tend to be pretty good at,” Gubin said

Above that the roof, he was having lunch one day in 1978 with a woman who worked as his assistant. Taking note of all the low-flying planes, she said it would be nice to make a sign welcoming everyone to Milwaukee. “You know what would even be better?” Gubin said.

The next thing you know, he’s out there on the black roof with a roller and white paint creating the sign that would bring more notoriety than anything else in his long career. A story about his confusing message ran in thousands of newspapers and magazines, on national TV news, “The Tonight Show,” Paul Harvey, all over.

you wanna take Beckett out and make the show more case-oriented?

Fine.

Then take Castle out too because it would be MAJORLY OOC for him to continue solving cases without her there with him, dead or alive. It just would not happen.

Instead, center the show around ALEXIS CASTLE. Have Caskett go off for a second honeymoon or whatever in Paris or travel Europe or drive cross-country on their new motorcycles or whatever. Let Alexis call them periodically (whether or not they’re on screen; doesn’t matter) or receive funny postcards about Castle breaking the World’s Biggest Rubber Band Ball or being mistaken for Jason Bateman (again) or something at the end of each episode that keeps with the funny feeling of the show. Have her work with Hayley at the P.I. Office. Have the boys chip in every once in a while. Have Perlmutter be their M.E. and adore Alexis just as much as he loathes Rick.

DON’T KILL OFF ANYBODY

Don’t want to keep Lanie?

Fine.

Send Lanie on a luxury cruise. Get her a better job working for the FBI or something. Or maybe she can go work at a hospital or join the Peace Corps or do something but DO. NOT. KILL. HER.

These characters all deserve happy endings and definitely do not deserve to be pushed aside like they never mattered in the first place.
