Benny lights a cigarette and takes a long draw from it, watching as the ember at the end of it glows bright and then fades back to black. He held it in his lungs for a moment and then lets it out into the cool night air. He can’t really do any long term damage anyway, but it’s a habit that he picked up when he was still human and it made it easier for him to blend into a crowd without being noticed. He too was on the hunt for a den of vampires that had been causing problems and growing their numbers. This group unparticular wasn’t even just using humans as food, they would drain them all the way until the last drop and either tie them up to be turned; or just let them wander along a dark dirt road on the county line and have them die that way.
He had a suspicion based on the savagery of this behavior and lack of hiding that this den had to be tied to his old maker. If that were to indeed be the case then he would take pleasure in killing them off one by one. Benny never wanted to be a vampire in the first place, he was brought in against his will when he was still human and turned as a sacrifice. Then when he fell in love with a human woman and wanted to leave the coven, his maker killed him. Recently he found out that he had slaughtered his lover just out of spite the same night he condemned Benny to Purgatory.
The Cajun finished the cigarette and stomped it out on the ground before moving along down the sidewalk. Something about tonight seemed different and it put him on edge. A fog began to roll in causing a blur on the street lights, he relied more on his other senses that had been raised when he had been turned. He could hear the sounds of the human couple in the alleyway having sex, and there was a sweet scent in the air, the smell of blood followed by the bitter slap of decay. To a vampire it was like putting out a chocolate cake.
He sees a figure walking down the path opposite of him, he could tell that this person was different. They weren’t a vampire but they weren’t human either. He watches closely as he walked past her. “Evening Cher..” He says in a polite tone. “Interestin weather we have tonight isn’t it?”

The distraction of the body in the alleyway nearly caused her to drop her sunglasses when she heard someone walk past her. Quickly shoving the tinted aviators back onto her face, she coughed at the sickly-sweet scent of the tobacco that stained his clothes. The way he spoke sent a chill up her spine considering what she had just witnessed in the alley. She immediately went into defense mode, but made an effort not to give away her suspicions. She took in a deep breath through her nose as he passed by, trying to get more of an identification of him since she couldn’t see him well with her sunglasses on.

“Interesting weather, indeed...” She glanced back down the alleyway. “I’m waiting on my friend. She’s-uh...a little preoccupied at the moment with her new acquaintance. I haven’t heard anything in a while and was wondering if you could be a pal and come with me to check it out? If the guy did something to her, I doubt I’d be able to handle the kind of muscle-heads that hang out here.” The demon gestured to her thin frame. She was a little more skin and bones than usual since she had run out of food before making it to this little town. Malnourishment was a quick way to lose her edge on normal people, and she would need to get her strength back up if there was a nest of nomadic vampires that were hunting her down.

She didn’t really believe in prayer, but ever since she caught wind of them travelling the same path as her, she had hoped that they weren’t working with anyone else in her capture. It’s not like she had a wanted poster plastered up in every monster den in the country, but in some circles she knew there would be subtle information passed around about it. She eyed the gruff man cautiously. It was hard for her to tell if someone was human or a monster when they had the coating stench of tobacco masking their entirety.

Fangs, Blades, and Vampire Dens

“Excuse me,” Faryn raised her pale hand to attract the attention of a nearby waitress. “I know this sounds weird, but something smells off about the steak. It smells like it was freshly spoiled and then it was cooked. I know you don’t trust my nose, but I do. Would you please have the chef take a look at it, or maybe make me a new one? Thanks.” She didn’t give the young woman any time to object or even state she would take care of the problem. The blonde’s polite smile was fake, but she was just trying to do her job, and Faryn wasn’t making this night easier for her.

She took a sip of her beer, hiding the quick inhales through her nose. Every bar she had visited in the down had their smell in it. Normally, she didn’t care what the other things that go bump in the night do with their free time, but her paranoia was getting to her. Every town before this one had the same signature smell, and it bothered her. The only time the smells were consistent was when something was tracking her, or if she was tracking something. Something was off about this whole situation, and it was more than the potentially rotting meat she was served for dinner.

There were a few punks in the bar, some average joe’s trying to wind down before going home alone or to their families, and people who liked to drink away the pain before disappearing into the night. Faryn had dealt with vampires before, but each one always had different targets.

“Well isn’t this just great,” she muttered to herself. They weren’t presently at the bar, but they had been there. She sighed and stood up from the table, her grey fingers still gripping the bottle she had just started drinking. Faryn noted someone staring at her from across the room. It happened often. People thought it was interesting for someone to be wearing sunglasses...inside...at night. Another person to be aware of just in case. She took a sip and tossed some cash on the table before walking out.

“This place is a bust, and the food sucks too,” she growled as she stepped out of the door. Alcohol laws didn’t apply to her, at least she didn’t care about them. Who was going to catch her? She snorted.

Something jangled behind her. She took a step out to check out the alley nearby and saw two people going at it by the dumpster. “Real classy, guys!” She shouted and raised her hands in the air. The point was to see if they were making out or if one of them was having dinner on the other’s neck. The pale woman lifted her sunglasses for a moment to get a better look. She could see them clearly in the dark, and to her disappointment it was just another sloppy human couple.

“I hope I didn’t just miss them again.” Faryn cursed to herself. There weren’t that many people outside the bar, she could easily start sniffing for clues but if these vampires were using vehicles it would be hard to track. “Damn...” She chugged her beer and threw the bottle back down towards the couple in the alley. That’s when she noticed the feet sticking out from behind the dumpster.
