“Excuse me,” Faryn raised her pale hand to attract the attention of a nearby waitress. “I know this sounds weird, but something smells off about the steak. It smells like it was freshly spoiled and then it was cooked. I know you don’t trust my nose, but I do. Would you please have the chef take a look at it, or maybe make me a new one? Thanks.” She didn’t give the young woman any time to object or even state she would take care of the problem. The blonde’s polite smile was fake, but she was just trying to do her job, and Faryn wasn’t making this night easier for her.
She took a sip of her beer, hiding the quick inhales through her nose. Every bar she had visited in the down had their smell in it. Normally, she didn’t care what the other things that go bump in the night do with their free time, but her paranoia was getting to her. Every town before this one had the same signature smell, and it bothered her. The only time the smells were consistent was when something was tracking her, or if she was tracking something. Something was off about this whole situation, and it was more than the potentially rotting meat she was served for dinner.
There were a few punks in the bar, some average joe’s trying to wind down before going home alone or to their families, and people who liked to drink away the pain before disappearing into the night. Faryn had dealt with vampires before, but each one always had different targets.
“Well isn’t this just great,” she muttered to herself. They weren’t presently at the bar, but they had been there. She sighed and stood up from the table, her grey fingers still gripping the bottle she had just started drinking. Faryn noted someone staring at her from across the room. It happened often. People thought it was interesting for someone to be wearing sunglasses...inside...at night. Another person to be aware of just in case. She took a sip and tossed some cash on the table before walking out.
“This place is a bust, and the food sucks too,” she growled as she stepped out of the door. Alcohol laws didn’t apply to her, at least she didn’t care about them. Who was going to catch her? She snorted.
Something jangled behind her. She took a step out to check out the alley nearby and saw two people going at it by the dumpster. “Real classy, guys!” She shouted and raised her hands in the air. The point was to see if they were making out or if one of them was having dinner on the other’s neck. The pale woman lifted her sunglasses for a moment to get a better look. She could see them clearly in the dark, and to her disappointment it was just another sloppy human couple.
“I hope I didn’t just miss them again.” Faryn cursed to herself. There weren’t that many people outside the bar, she could easily start sniffing for clues but if these vampires were using vehicles it would be hard to track. “Damn...” She chugged her beer and threw the bottle back down towards the couple in the alley. That’s when she noticed the feet sticking out from behind the dumpster.
