Shopping Time || Emmeryn & Severa

As Emmeryn put her purchases away and led Severa out of the shop, she couldn’t help but laugh. Her friend wanted to seem upset, but the former Exalt could tell that she was putting on that act she used so often around the others.
Image
“Hehe, I’ll try not… to forget…” Emmeryn teased. “For now, though… why don’t we try to find… that tea shop… before we forget it again… I think we’ll be… ready to go back… after that…”

Why did it sound like she was going to forget it and buy her another staff or something for healing? Shaking her head at that thought, she thought of that tea shop that they talked about before.

“Right, you said that they had some good tea right?” Severa held onto her staff, not wanting to lose it after all the effort the former Exalt put into helping her.

“Right…” replied the former Exalt with an encouraging smile. “Something about breath… helps our energy… move through us… But by itself… that’s not always enough… It needs… fuel… like a lamp…”

When the two reached the counter, the apothecary looked at Emmeryn and she nodded back. When she turned her attention back to Severa, the Sage chuckled. “I hope you don’t… mind… I already bought it for you… Hehe, you just had… to choose…”

Severa blinked when she said that she had bought the staff already for her then frowned. How did she know the exact price for one thing, secondly.. she really didn’t have to. Well too late to complain about that, so she just sighed.

“It’s alright, just don’t tell the others or they’d kill me if they knew that...” She paused for a moment then shook her head. “I can buy things myself, don’t do it next time alright?”

“Close…” Emmeryn replied, smiling. “This glow… it came from the breath you took… That light… it’s you… Some people use magic… that relies on blood… or emotion… but the magic I’ll teach you… it relies on your spirit… and shines through… with every breath you take… The stronger the spirit… the brighter the light… so for your first time… this is really good…”

“First time with a little spark...” She looked at the staff then snapped out of her thoughts, going to purchase it before she continued with her lesson.

“So... I just have to concentrate with my spirit to heal someone?” Severa was confused about it but she wanted to be clear about it.

Watching the gemstone carefully as Severa did as she instructed, Emmeryn saw a tiny spark of light glowing from within. It may have been small, but this was exactly what she was hoping to see.
Image
“Severa… open your eyes… and look…” the Sage said cheerfully. “That light… it’s the breath of life… When we heal… this is what we use… If you’re able to do this… on your first try… then I think you’ll be a… really wonderful healer someday…”

Severa opened her eyes, wondering what she was talking about and looked at the staff, seeing the light.

“You use this glow?” She blinked then thought if she’d really be a good healer or not. If anything, it was something her mother wasn’t so she could give it a try...

“Thanks Lady Emm.”

“Really…? Severa… that’s a good first sign…” the Sage replied reassuringly. “Just… one more test… okay…? I need you… to hold it in both hands… and take a deep breath in… When you’re ready… close your eyes and breathe out…”

“First sign?” She blinked, trying to understand what she was trying to tell her then nodded, holding it with both her hands, not too tightly like a sword. She remembered that much and took a deep breath, closing her eyes and breathed out.

“That’s… for you to decide…” the former Exalt responded, turning the staff upwards in Severa’s hands. “You’re probably… more comfortable… with a sword… but you don’t need to hold this as tightly… Let it rest in your palms… and tell me how it feels…”

For her to decide huh? She watched the former Exalt and nodded slowly. Just let it rest in her hand basically and tell her how it feels.

Severa held onto the staff lightly, trying to word how she was feeling it.

“It... kinda feels connected to me in a way? Like it’s a part of me.”

A light smile tugged at the former Exalt’s cheeks as she watched Severa look out among the staves. Emmeryn could tell that her friend was trying hard to apply what she had taught her to her decision making process.
Image
“Hm… That one… I think it’s using garnet… for its gemstone…” she commented. “Severa…. you were born in January… right…? Garnet… it’s your birthstone… Hehe… they say it’s good… for love… and inner healing…”

“Garnet?” She blinked, unsure of how to really feel about this staff, but out of all the other ones she looked at, this one felt right to her.

“L-Love and inner healing?!” Severa blushed when she said that’s what it’s good for. Maybe... this was good for her since she needed it but still.

“Do you really think this staff is good for me to start with?” She was still unsure if she was able to learn how to heal others properly.

“Th-That’s right…” she agreed, staying a couple feet behind her friend. “There’s a different way… to help with anything… Hehe… I like to think… that everything… has a treatment…“
Emmeryn watched on as Severa approached the staff selection at the back. The shelves were lined with staves and crystals, and though many were similar, they were all finely tuned for specific usage.

“Though the pain that we all have are different.” She mumbled, sighing to herself but she was right. Everything had some sort of treatment... the most common one was time.

The redhead looked at the staves and picked out a redish stone coloured staff. “Hmm... this one... feels different from the others....”

“Hehe, that’s it… exactly…!” the former Exalt responded happily. “Sometimes… in war… it’s easy to forget… that our enemies… they’re people too… B-But everyone has… a different way of doing things… Differences… they can separate us… but they can bring us… together too… With healing… different methods and abilities… they work best… when everything comes together… That way… you can see what works best… for what you’re trying to heal…”

Enemies are people? Well Risen were once people too, but do they really count? Severa opened her mouth to say that there were some things that people and time can’t heal but quickly shut herself from saying anything then went back to looking at the potions for the moment.

“Different potions... for different things...” She mumbled then moved towards the staves, wondering which one she could be able to start with.

“Well… nothing’s burned… Not yet…” Emmeryn replied warmly. “We’re all here… to change that… Hehe, and maybe… learn something… along the way…”
Looking through the shelf in front of Severa, the former Exalt found a little vial that would help her make her point. “This one… saints wort… it grows… all over the place… People see it… as a weed… something… worthless… but its leaves… they’re good for bruises… When it’s… distilled like this… it can even help… with depression…”
Image
Putting the vial back, Emmeryn offered Severa a smile. “Learning to heal… it’s like learning anything else… People try… different things… and the ones that work… they get passed along…”

“Yet?” She frowned. Can she see the future and places like these will still burn to the ground? “I guess you’re right about that..” She looked at the vial that the former exalt was showing her. “Bruises.... and depression?” Maybe she could grab that for Noire and Brady? What else kind of concoctions did they have here?

“And different methods gets passed along depending on the person.” She only hoped that she’d be able to pass on the proper methods to her child if she was given the chance.

know-that-i-loved-you:
Finishing up with the apothecary, Emmeryn paid the man for the balm and thanked him for his help. Though she had hoped Severa might’ve found her way to the staves in the back, she wasn’t surprised to see her wandering through the wares.
image
“There’s so much… to see here… isn’t there…? It’s funny to think… that every little thing… could save a life… if you used it right…” she said warmly to her friend. “There weren’t… many places like this… where you were from… were there…?”

Severa merely shook her head. “All of these places were... burned to the ground or too expensive to pay for the elixirs.” She sighed. “We had to make do by figuring out what herbs to use from the side of the road. Assuming they weren’t burned and trampled on of course.”

How could people find the time to premix all of the medicine together anyways? Do most of these even work besides elixirs?

“How.. do you know if they really work?”

As Emmeryn spoke to the apothecary running the store, she peaked back every now and then to see if Severa had found a staff of her own. It looked like she was taking her time and figuring things out. That must have been a good sign.

Image

“I’ll… be there in just… a little while…” the former Exalt called back reassuringly. “Just tell me… if you need some help… okay…?”

“R-Right..” She nodded. “Just take your time. I’m just looking if there’s anything useful.” What is she talking about? Of course everything here was useful... most of the time.

Cure-all for colds? Does that even work? She’d have to ask Emmeryn about it later. If anything she was mostly looking at the herbs and other ingredients that she could mix together, wondering what each plant did..

Emmeryn smiled as she opened the door to the apothecary’s shop. Almost instantly, the smell of medicines and tonics rushed out to greet them. The shelves on the walls were lined with all kinds of dried plants and potions, and there was even a decent selection of staves towards the back.

Image

“See… what you can find… and I’ll come join you…” the former Exalt told her friend warmly. “I want to see… if the apothe…cary has some fresh balms… for soreness… Hehe, Lissa… she’s always so… sore… after marching… It’d be nice… to get her something…”

“So I’ll just find.. whatever I think is useful or something?” She blinked when she said to see what she could find then thought of what she could look for. Emmeryn was looking for fresh balms already.

“That sounds useful. Maybe I can try to find something for sickness. Maybe relaxation or something, but in tea or something like that.” Usually that was easier to drink right? She didn’t know and just went to find anything that she could get her hands on.

“Feelings… they can be hard… to control… and even when… we think we can help… sometimes it’s… to late…” she replied, “When that happens… sometimes healers… we feel responsible…”

Emmeryn paused for a little while when she remembered some of the people she herself was too late to save and how heavily their passing still weighed on her. Shaking her head to get her out of her funk, the former Exalt let out a quick sigh and turned back to Severa.

Image

“I think… a Heal Staff… is good for… beginners…” she answered, perking up a bit. “What kind… how it feels… and the crystal you use… those are all up… to you… Hehe, sometimes… the choice comes… naturally… like magic…”

Well that did made some sense. Feeling responsible for being unable to heal someone who was dying in their arms. They might as well be holding a weapon and feeling responsible that they couldn’t protect them with their strength. It was a very similar feeling now that she thought of it.

“A heal...staff?” She blinked. Could she even use it? “Naturally huh... so in a way it’s the opposite of weapons...” What kind of crystal could she even use? If she was right, the choice should just come naturally to her if they enter the store right? “Alright, let’s see what we can find..”

Emmeryn giggled and shook her head. “Hehe… sometimes we do… It’s a lot like… feeling sensitive… all the time… When you get tired… you’re tired… emotionally… I think your friend… Brady… he knows how that feels…”

Image

When they got to the apothecary shop, Emmeryn readjusted her hat and turned to smile at her friend. “You don’t need… to worry… After I woke up… the first time I tried… to use a staff… I almost broke it… Practice is… important… and I’ll help you… Hehe, now let’s see… if we can find a staff for you… inside here…”

Tired emotionally.. that does make sense but still. “He was... really stressed out when he couldn’t heal someone before. And we felt bad that we couldn’t really help him.” She sighed, especially when she heard the story of him and Owain found a young girl she was smiling but then she was gone.

“A staff huh...” She wondered which would be good. How could one even tell which staff was good for her to use? “Is there a beginner staff or the staffs have special powers to pick you?” Or was that just a rumor of the weapon picking it’s owner?

“S-Stamina…?” Emmeryn repeated curiously. “O-Oh, no… For healers… using staves… it’s not about your body… or your mind… it’s about how you feel… People say… that it has to do with your… spirit… more than your mind… Knowing how… a person’s body works… and having natural magic… that just helps the spell… work better…”

Image

Slowing down to look over her shoulder, the former Exalt smiled at her friend. “That’s why I thought… you’d be good… at healing… You care… about looking after your friends… and it’s… easy to see… that you have a lot of love… for all of them… If healing magic… really does have to do with your spirit… then I think you have… a good one for it…”

Wait really? Now she felt more confused. “I guess.. caring for people really tires you... healers out then.” She always thought that healing caused mental stress on people just by watching Brady over the years.  Or maybe it was because he wasn’t strong enough yet? Who knows.

Severa looked up at the former exalt and blushed when she said that she’d be good at healing because of how much she cared for her friends.. even if she acted like she didn’t most of the time.

“I-I don’t know. I tried using a stave once, and I couldn’t heal a basic cut or bruise.” She mumbled. She was a child then and didn’t know how to heal anything and just cried most of the time.
