Holy shit someone said my tears ricochet is about taylor and big machine/scott and the death of her masters and at first I didn’t understand it but now after really looking at the lyrics it’s so clear. she is a GENUIS at crafting metaphors
- In the preface she mentions an “embittered tormentor showing up at the funeral of his fallen object of obsession”… taylor was scott’s prized musical possession, but now he’s bitter because of their falling out and everything masters related. she embarrassed him and he clearly tormented her. he’s also probably bitter about all the success taylor is now having and how she’s not afraid to tell him to fuck himself
- “We gather here, we line up, weepin’ in a sunlit room” = funeral for her masters?
- “If I’m on fire, you'll be made of ashes, too” = if he’s gonna burn her you better believe she’s fighting back
- “Even on my worst day, did I deserve, babe / All the hell you gave me?” = pretty self explanatory….taylor was always good to scott, what did she do to deserve this?
- “Didn’t have it in myself to go with grace” = she couldn’t stay quiet and be the good, complicit girl he always tried to force her to be, she had to fight back
- “You’re the hero flying around, saving face” = scott running around trying to save his image and make her the bad guy
- “If I’m dead to you, why are you at the wake?” = if he’s so mad at taylor why can’t he keep her name out of his mouth and leave her alone?
- “Cursing my name, wishing I stayed” = he’s mad at taylor and he knows he messed up and lost what made his label special
- “We gather stones … some to throw, some to make a diamond ring” = I could be wrong about this but I’m guessing the stones are her songs? reference to sticks and stones break bones & possibly also how her songs put big machine on the map and made scott money hence the diamond ring?
- “You wear the same jewels that I gave you / as you bury me” = taylor made scott and big machine big and now he’s turning around and betraying her by taking the very thing that made him. also jewels because taylor’s music is very precious and valuable to her
- “I can go anywhere I want … just not home” = she started with big machine and it was her home, but now after what scott has done she has to leave
- “When you can’t sleep at night (You hear my stolen lullabies)” = the stolen lullabies are her stolen masters. wow
- It’s also worth mentioning that one of taylor’s first big hits with big machine was teardrops on my guitar. back then, her tears were falling onto her guitar. now, they’re ricocheting off of the guitar and back onto big machine for the pain they caused her
