From what I've gathered through various channels of scuttlebutt is that while they put their friendly execs and creators forward when it comes to game conferences, press releases, etc, the actual board of the company are largely old, totally out of touch businessmen who are ruthlessly litigious and protective of the brand. They take the customer base as a given constant and are totally disconnected from the reality of those customers and how and why the brand has its base to begin with. They don't understand the use of their product in a tournament setting and don't care to learn. It's just another aberration and threat.

Nintendo is actually really fascinating as a video game company, since they are simultaneously the oldest still-functioning business in the field and one of the big three console producers. Nintendo is 134 years old. They were originally a manufacturer of playing cards, jumped on the arcade machine trend, produced an absolute smash hit banger by complete happenstance after they didn't have the rights to create a liscensed Popeye game and swapped Bluto out for a gorilla, and the rest is history.

As a result of their unorthodox history, Nintendo has a lot of vestigal stuff going on. They are the whale of the tech world; originally a small creature that decided to enter a new environment, that suddenly found itself in a whole new world as a titan of its field. Unlike its fish contemporaries, which have always lived in the sea, the whale retains the underlying bone structure of a land animal. It's the same with Nintendo. At their core of cores, they remain a conservative, suit-and-tie Japanese megacorporation. This, of course, creates unique problems. Most video game companies do not predate video game technology, and thus are rather "with it" in terms of the radical youth and their internets. Many of the people at Nintendo are like this as well, I imagine, but there remains a lot of people in this company that runs multiple huge online games and produces game consoles that honestly and truly do not understand the field their company specializes in. This square-peg-round-hole situation has clearly resulted in a lot of innovation, but also a lot of unique problems for the company and the games they produce.

Hence, you have a company that doesn't understand that online content and tournaments are free and effective advertising that people willingly watch and produce, something that's probably been widely understood since before I was born.
