Unnie! I really want to know your insights about the Goblin finale, i'm really happy with Wang Yeo and Sunny! *u* and I love your lockscreens too, saranghaeyo!~

*this contains certain spoilers for Goblin and it’s gonna be long*

General comment: The feelings I felt were not that far from Scarlet Heart. That is one. Why? Let’s start from Wang Yeo and Kim Sun’s story.

The moment Sunny decided to leave for good, I know it’s not gonna be the ending that I wanted, but it was the most probable considering the factors of the plot. Let’s keep that in check, their story got somehow lifted when they went to the other side together, atlast. Nevermind that they spend another lifetime like this, tormented and in pain, ‘cause they’ll be happy on their next.. I don’t think so? It was Sunny’s third life, and assuming it was also Wang Yeo’s third chance of living. Considering that, isn’t it cruel that they will only get to live happily with ONE LIFETIME like this? Let’s have a closer look on their past and present lives:

1. Wang Yeo x Kim Sun = Sad Ending2. Wang Yeo (in hell)* x Kim Sun’s 2nd Life = They did not meet3. Grim Reaper x Sunny = Sad Ending4. Lee Hyuk x Sunny = Happy Ending

I get that it was their last, and the deity have decided not to let them relive their past memories for they will only be in pain again. But while watching their coffee shop scene, I can see that it’s not the Grim Reaper we have come to love, it’s not the Sunny we admired, it’s Lee Hyuk. and. Sunny. That’s what made me sad, and that concept made me cry because I know that the Grim Reaper and Sunny we had come to love didn’t actually get a happy ending. It’s just that the Grim Reaper worked hard for 30 years, and it seems like the deity only waited for Sunny to die because it’s gonna be the last soul he must guide. So it’s like both of them spend their first 3 lifetimes in trial and error and heavenly challenges here and there until the they had come up with the right formula that is their also their last chance. 

And now, we go to Ji Eun Tak. I like how the writer kept the story going that she is still a missing soul, and a sacrifice. I’d like to give shoutout to anon for giving us a heads up of what Ji Eun Tak really means, and I will quote: 

Truly, she had become one big sacrifice on her first lifetime. Not that the Grim Reaper told her that it was her first life, but beforehand Kim Shin already told her that he met her in the future (during the scene where Kim Shin foreshadowed the life of Eun Tak’s teacher, he accidentally come to see her face). Well atleast, she had all her ups and downs on this lifetime and truly she was a deity’s favorite creation. With her heart in the purest form, I wouldn’t be surprised that her memories were also intact and she had come to fulfill her promise to be back in Kim Shin’s arms. If the heaven’s by your side, there’s nothing to fear and doubt. It’s 100% Given that they will meet. But on her second life, for how long will she stay alive? Given that her life would be for about 80 years old, minus the years she haven’t met him yet, that only gives her 61 years to spend with Kim Shin. If she managed to live for another 2 lives, then that will only give her 180 years in total to be the Goblin’s bride. Isn’t it too short for a life of a goblin who’s gonna turn a thousand years older? 

(S/N: The scene that I couldn’t forget was when Wang Yeo was narrating, how the longest season of the rain wouldn’t stop. It’s really, a heartbreaker.)

That’s one problem, too. But in the hopes of regenerated lifetime and light heart, I believe that the deity would in turn, make the Goblin human once and for all, and grow old with his bride. They’re combating with time, and it was the greatest enemy you could never beat, right? And of course, what made me bawl my eyes out is the reality that during the times everything is in a mess, twists are happening, with all these reincarnation and words of reborn, we have the Goblin waiting all these time. He. was. stuck. How long has it been? 9 Years of being in nowhere, another 30 years without Eun Tak, and another hundred years without the people he knew. 

That’s why during the scene where he saw Sunny and Wang Yeo, I didn’t feel anything but greater sadness. What good does it do if they are not your sister and bestfriend? They’re just the reincarnation of your loved ones. With no memories of who you are. I know that’s what he asked, but still, my empathy towards him became bigger. How much more sadness must Kim Shin carry to repay the debts of his sins?

And there, at last before the sun goes down, Eun Tak was finally able to meet Kim Shin. Now, Eun Tak goes by the name of Park Soo Min (name meaning excellence and a bright mind) BUT I believe, their meeting was just another consolation. It was just for the viewer’s satisfaction… and I realized that what if Scarlet Heart aired their alternate ending? Would I feel the same? Will I be happy or satisfied?

Maybe I would be happy, but in the end, you cannot remove the idea that one greatly suffered before attaining momentarily happiness–with no certainties in life.
