The Selection AU - Maxon’s 20th birthday
Maxon thought it was a little odd when America refused to spend his birthday just having a quiet dinner; he had been longing for peace and quiet for a while. But her counter-suggestion intrigued him, spending the day out with Carter and his friends sounded like a good idea, this was finally the time for being spontaneous, as she well put it. After years of having his birthday parties planned by his father and used as business meetings, the thought of spending the day outside the castle sounded like the breath of fresh air he much needed.
"But you’re not coming with me?" Maxon asked, still not believing she would want to spend his birthday away from him.
"I’ll stay and make dinner just for the two of us. It will be my birthday gift to you. I have some new recipes I want to try out," that was all America could say without incriminating herself.
The sound of loud music and laughter ruined the surprise when they returned, but Maxon was still in awe seeing what America had done. There were people and balloons everywhere; you could hear the buzz in the air with all the energy. Maxon’s heart started beating faster and faster until he saw her, in the center of it all, the love of his life. It was bound to be the best birthday party those castle had ever seen.
"Surprise," she said from the top of the stairs, even if it was impossible for Maxon to hear.
"I love you," he said seconds before running to meet her.

“— I love you, Marlee — he shouted at her. Could barely hear him with the noiseof the crowd, but the statement was made. — We’re going to be fine, I promise.
Marlee was so frightened they couldn’t answer, but did so with his head. At that moment, I could only think of how she looked beautiful. Her golden hair was a mess, the dress was a disaster and his shoes had been somewhere along the way.But, God, she sounded radiant.
