Perseverance. دأب // Jacob.

After the altercation with Malcolm, and a combination of his past offences, it was clear that Jacob was doing more harm than good. After discovering that Jacob had also been infected with Maniro, the staff were worried what that might lead to. He was known to react badly, violently, to news, and they all had their hands full as it was. He had become a threat to not only himself, but to others as well... and he was going to take more time and help than what the staff at Serenity could provide for the young man, especially with being a veteran. Seeing that Serenity was a place for children and young adults, being in the army was an anomaly that no one there could fully understand. While they could help with PTSD, it was the reason behind it that made it difficult.

After careful consideration, Jacob was released from Serenity and placed in a care facility for ex-army men who suffered from trauma, with a recommendation from none other than Jack Emerson. It took 3 years before Jacob was finally discharged. Afterwards, he called Jack, and apologized and thanked him for everything he had done.

Nothing would ever be normal again, he knew that much. But hopefully, life would become easier, and he’d be able to start again. He moved back to North Carolina, and stayed with his mom for a little while. The two became extremely close, and everything was beginning to look up. She remarried that year, and by now Jacob had gotten over everything that had happened with his dad, Trevor, and Trevor’s dad. Trevor eventually recovered from his own issues, but chose to stay on the west coast. He did keep in touch with his family, though.

He had never formally gone to college, but with everything he had endured, now was as good as a time as ever. He started school at the University of North Carolina. He’s not sure what he’s going to do yet -maybe psychology?- but thanks to the support of his friends and family, Jacob knows he’ll figure it all out eventually.

“Have you had a cough?” His lungs didn’t sound healthy per say, but it wasn’t anything serious. “I can give you a fever reducer, which should help with your head, too.”

Image

“My throats a little sore, but...” he attributed that to his never ending yelling fits with Jack, especially as of late. It itched, but he couldn’t tell why. “Anything, honestly,” he was still stern, but at this point Jacob would take anything.

“Okay, good…” she murmured. “I’m going to listen to your breathing, if you could take a deep breath in, then out a few times.” She put the stethoscope in her ears. “So nausea and headache? You’re a bit warm, too…”

Image

The adrenaline was definitely flowing through his system, but it was also calm at the same time... like it was sitting there, waiting for a situation to arise in which it needed to be used. Doing what she asked, Jacob inhaled and exhaled, trying his best to keep himself calm.

Sidney took out her tablet and pulled up his records. “How long have you felt this way?” She walked over to a locked closet and pulled out a key, then grabbed a medical kit from it, all while still looking at Jacob. A thermometer, blood pressure, and heart rate monitor were all on a small cart that she rolled out. Sidney locked the door again.

Image

“I don’t know, when I went into ISO? The day before?” he felt like an animal about to be tested on. No doubt the boy’s heart rate would be increasing right now. “I didn’t think anything about it and then I heard one of you guys talking about a thing going around, it was on the news or something,”

Sidney nodded and pressed a button to call guards to tie Jacob down. As they strapped him into the bed, she asked, “What symptoms are you feeling?”
Image

He felt like an animal, a test subject, and the restraints certainly made him more anxious. “My head hurts and I’m always dizzy, and it feels like my stomach is too, it never stops turning,”

“Under normal circumstances things would be different. But you’ve been violent. Would you like me to examine you? If you are feeling ill, we can have you restrained while I examine you.”

Image

Seriously--seriously??! Fine, whatever, restrain me, but if I throw up on you it’s not my fault.

“No, I know they aren’t when it comes to outside, but in the case of what they do in here, every patient walks in innocent. Might not stay that way for long, but clean slates are for starters. –Marshall, building a hero complex isn’t an excuse. Never has been, never will be.”
Image

So everyone in here can ‘do no harm’?? That’s a load of bullshit. People are talking, apparently there’s a kid who’s a murderer. Inside Serenity. Still innocent, huh? I’m not trying to be some sort of hero, i’m just trying to prove that I’m not a villain either.

“I did what I needed to do isn’t a fact, Marshall–it’s vague, and it doesn’t work. Every time I do my job, you get in trouble. Wanna know why? ‘Cause you get into fights, you break the rules, you do shit you’re not supposed to and you cause chaos. That’s why you get fucked over, not ‘cause of my job. You know what it entails, Marshall.”
Image

You would’ve done the same thing-- do you think everyone in here is innocent?? You have no idea.... I do, what I need to do. That doesn’t mean I like it, but it’s what has to happen.

“Did Malcolm come at you with a knife, Marshall? What’s your side in this whole thing? –This time, it wasn’t meddling; you know that. I’m donig my job, and the other times, I was trying to…figure out what was goin’ on with a friend.”
Image

I didn’t wait long enough to find out. You weren’t there, you didn’t see what happened. He was on top of me, his hands were on me, and I did what I needed to do. That’s meddling. And every time you ‘do your job’ I get fucked over, so enough.

“Marshall, you’re twice his size–right now, I dunno if you’d punch a baby if it was flying at you. S’not your fault, but you gotta calm down for a bit. As for minding my own business… Yeah. I fucked up, and that’s my fault. Dunno how to fix it, either.”
Image

And? That’s like saying you ‘can’t hit a girl because she’s a girl’. If a chick is comingat me with a knife I don’t care what’s in her pants, or anyone else’s. Then why don’t you go on and work with that, rather than meddling in other people’s lives.

“Generally, you and I clashing; specifically, you actually beating Malcolm ’til he’s bruised.”
Image

What was I supposed to do??! He was coming at me.  And if you would just mind your own business, well, that other bit would be instantly solved as well.

“What else would you do? Sit somewhere else feeling the same way? W-we’re doing our best right now. Like I said, I can offer you those things, but beyond that there isn’t much we can do.”

Image

So if I throw up, I’m just going to have to sit here in my own vomit?? I don’t get it, I don’t understand any of this...

“I-I’m not authorized to release you at this time, Jacob. I don’t know what it is that you want me to do. I can offer you an IV with fluids if you are feeling ill, but that is all, I’m sorry.”

Image

You can’t just make me sit in here feeling like this!!! That’s not fiar, you can’t...
