“…Bucky?” Your voice was weak as your eyelids pulled apart. You stretched your fingers out around you, only to find a cold mattress dampened with your own sweat, your hair sticking to your forehead. Sitting up, you clenched a hand over your mouth to stifle the sobs escaping you.

This was every morning for you. Nightmares, realization, weeping, before heading out to face another painful day. Another day without him.

The memories of the break-up flashed through your mind for the thousand time that week. The argument sparked by a drunken kiss with Natasha, but the fuel was the quiet pain you suffered. Longing for the man you loved, only to get ignored most the time. It wasn’t his fault, as he was trying to adapt to the new world.

You could remember as he stood, allowing you to smack his chest repeatedly, screaming and crying. He just watched you, let every word sink in, before gently kissing you on the cheek and leaving without a word.

Your sobs became audible, worse than usual. You began to rock backward and forward, tears streaming down your face.

You still loved him dearly when he died.

A scream erupted from deep within your soul, and it repeated again and again. You hardly noticed when Steve burst into the room, distraught, dark bags under his eyes and hair messy. He watched you for a minute as you just screamed over and over, shouting for Bucky, yelling for him not to go, sometimes just pure screams of agony.

Eventually he sat beside you, rubbing your back soothingly, kissing the top of your head. You fell into his chest, the screams dying down.

“I still love you,” You gasped, the words causing Steve to let tears run down his face as well.

Little did you know, outside your door, the Avengers listened to your screams. Clint had his arm around Natasha, Wanda and Vision holding each other, Sam and Rhodie leaning against the wall with solemn expressions, Tony wincing with every whimper you made, Bruce’s eyes shut, wishing the sounds would stop.

Some liked to think maybe Bucky could hear the terrorizing sounds too, but you didn’t. You didn’t want him to hear the pain wrenching shrieks.

Because, deep down you still knew.

You knew that he still would have loved you too.
