I don’t want to join the hysteria, but I am honestly wondering what I can do.

In Germany we have a very right-wing party called “AFD” who has been gaining more and more power throughout the past few years.

What can I do but vote. I am not good at debating and I get too emotional in political conversations, and we don’t need more emotions in our debates right now.

I work in a creative field and can send certain messages through pictures and graphics.

But who is my audience? Shall I preach to the choir, who agrees with me anyway? If I analyze the AFD’s party platform and point out what they literally say – for example, that LGBT relationships are “sick society experiments” – then everyone who was appalled before will be appalled again, and the others will cheer or argue, “but the immigrants!”

I am not able to argue against someone who unironically says “Thanks Merkel” / “Thanks Obama”.

I try to counter whenever I hear platitudes from my friends and family. I notice how kids in my family, who are actually quite bright and inclusive, repeat after their grandparents, because it sounds nice and easy: “we cannot provide shelter for everyone. They take away what’s ours.”

Educate, where it’s possible.

The US elections have shown that someone can utter the most heinous inhuman insults and not be considered unable for the job… on the contrary.

We cannnot argue against those who don’t want to listen. Because we cannot change the circumstances they live in. this counts at least for a demographic that has to fear for their jobs and experiences poverty and just searches for a scapegoat.

As for educated middle class white people with cars, jobs and regular holiday trips…I don’t know. I don’t know how to reach them.

Where do I want to go with this? I really have no fucking clue how to avoid something like this in Germany.

Right now I just can keep on believing that all of us share common sense and humanity in an extent that we are able to give. In our families, in our professions, wherever we see an opportunity.
