Pacific Coralroot, Corallorhiza mertensiana (Orchidaceae). 🌸 A new orchid species for me! These were so PINK compared to other coralroots I’ve seen. This species used to be considered a subspecies of C. maculata. The species name is after German botanist Franz Carl Mertens. #corallorhizamertensiana #pacificcoralroot #mertenscoralroot #orchidaceae #plants #botany #plantid #plantidentification #saprophyte (at Asahel Curtis Nature Trail) https://www.instagram.com/p/Byvc3lxgYfE/?igshid=1ike2cst1zxu7

Enchanter’s-Nightshade, Circaea alpina (Onagraceae). 🌸🍀 Circaea is named after the Greek Goddess Circe, an enchantress. Interestingly, though the specific epithet is “alpina”, this species is most commonly found in cool, damp forests. #circaeaalpina #enchantersnightshade #onagraceae #plants #flowers #wildflowers #botany #plantid #plantidentification (at Tiger Mountain) https://www.instagram.com/p/Byq-kPpgtDU/?igshid=9tjcczwnipsu

Twinflower, Linnaea borealis (Linnaeaceae). 🌸🌸 These cuties are named in honor of Swedish Botanist Carl Linnaeus, the “father of modern taxonomy”. He invented binomial nomenclature, the method we use to classify organisms with a genus and species. #twinflower #linnaeaborealis #linnaeaceae #plants #botany #plantid #plantidentification #pnw #plantsofinstagram (at Tiger Mountain) https://www.instagram.com/p/BydRwi0guf8/?igshid=ybcppyo2vy66

Pacific Ninebark, Physocarpus capitatus (Rosaceae) 🌸🌳 The genus name comes from the Greek Physa (bladder) and carpos (fruit), describing the inflated follicle fruits. The flowers are in a capitate inflorescence. It was believed that this tree had nine layers of bark. 🌿 #physocarpuscapitatus #physocarpus #pacificninebark #rosaceae #plants #botany #plantid #plantidentification #plantphotography (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx-zZl1Azzv/?igshid=1a4d4nm6xi9d4

Wild Ginger, Asarum caudatum (Aristolochiaceae). ... Though called a ginger, this plant is not related to culinary ginger (Zingiber officinale, Zingiberaceae). Though some have used this plant as a ginger substitute, all plants in this family contain Aristolochic acid, which is classified as a carcinogen. ... Interestingly, this plant lacks petals. It is the maroon tepals which have long tails (caudate means “having a tail”). ... #asarumcaudatum #wildginger #aristolochiaceae #plants #botany #plantid #plantidentification #plantsofinstagram #plantphotography (at Leavenworth, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx2dbFZlh3W/?igshid=koor3adgnc6k
