Warning: SPOILERS AHEAD FOR OITNB SEASON 4

I usually dont do this, but after going through the hashtags to talk about season 4, I had to say something.

Annnnd of course the Tumblr community turns the finale into a shit show and are trying to protest it…oitnb isn’t “racist” for what they did man wtf. It’s a damn show. A damn good show. A show that has a more vested interest in trying to represent a lot of the things tumblrites stand for than Ive seen any other show do. And they do it well.

I’ll stan for black lives, lgbtq+ lives, and the lives of marginalized people until the cows come home but God damn people. If you’re upset about the finale, guess what, they did their jobs. You angry? Great, you’re a human being with a soul and an awareness of the social injustices that pervade our world. Jesus H Christ….this was the one website where I thought people would be able to come together and have an intelligent discourse while we all collectively mourn the loss of one of televisions must compelling, complex, and loveable characters who, might I add, was a lot of people’s first look into the complexities/intersections of race and sexuality in the lives of black women. ESPECIALLY black women in the LGBTQ community. Turns out I was wrong.

Stop being such self righteous assholes for one second please. Please. Out of respect for every victim of corruption/police brutality/systematic racism, stop being a keyboard activist and think for just a second about what the writers were trying to do here. Acting like it was an easy choice for Poussey to die. If you’re saying “not like this” and “she deserved better” then think about the real life victims families of the Trayvon Martins, the Eric Garners, and the Tamir Rices who are saying the EXACT. SAME. THING. Stop insinuating that they used her as a prop to make some point. Stop saying they’re trying to get us to sympathize with the police/the system. Stop being pretentious pricks who are trying to get one of the only shows that actually gives a fuck about what goes on in the many diverse communities we belong to shut down because shit didn’t happen the way you wanted it to. Because it reflected an ugly truth about society. Because Jenji Kohan reminded us in a very personal, almost invasive way in our own living rooms that this ain’t a fucking game. It’s not another hashtag. It’s not another reblog. It’s not another online trend.

Poussey is a character in a show (a damn great character), but the circumstances of her death are the reality of the families of these real life victims. That was the point man. This season wasnt supposed to make you feel good. This season wasnt supposed to make you happy. It was supposed to feel like you lost a family member. In a lot of ways, we all did. Now, you can identify with maybe even the slightest fragment of the pain the families of our brothers and sisters go through when society is working against them. Next time, because we all know there will be a next time, we can remember this feeling when one of our own gets gunned down in the streets by a cop and the whole world is trying to say they deserve it. This finale broke up the numbness that Ive seen settle in when these murders continue to happen. The numbness that takes over and turns into complaceny when you feel like there is nothing you can do. The numbness when you stare at a tv, sigh, and continue on about your day because hey, it wasn’t you right? The numbness you feel when you’ve seen so many hashtags on social media that it almost doesn’t seem real anymore. This show broke up that numbness for me, as I’m sure it did for many of you. So stop trying to add marks to your social justice warrior online street cred and reflect. Mourn. Think. God damn. Phew. Ok. Rant over.

In conclusion, Poussey, you will be fiercely missed. Thank you and Fuck you to the writers/director of OITNB for an amazing fourth season. I’m gonna go cry and eat some ice cream and think about how fucked the privatized prison system is.
