Why are we in a graveyard?

"——I told you not to follow me."          [ She doesn’t even turn to face Maria——she simply stares ahead, eyes trained on the tombstone in front of her. ]

"This is——this is where they buried him.                            My, uh———my partner, I mean.                                          I——I killed him when I was with HYDRA.”

[ Her voice cracks on the last syllable, and she looks from Marcus’ name on the granite to the flowers in her hands, kneeling down to place them over the stone. ]

So the first one went dreadfully and I tagged the people mentioned in this post many times and I apologize for that. I just want  you all to know that I love all of you even if you aren’t mentioned on this. I’m still surprised how many of you are here and still sticking around and for that I appreciate it. I love you all.

Part 3

Bold is those dear to me.

[ She nods. Where she hadn’t been offended at Maria’s words about Mike’s feelings towards her, she was offended at her comment on her ability to catch the surveillance.                     If that didn’t say something about her as an agent, she wasn’t sure what would. ]

“I wouldn’t have expected anything less.                                        Understood.

[ There's no satisfaction on her cold features, but yet a calmness that echoes in her movements. She is swift, but graceful, as she twirls the knife in her hand and moves to the door. Again, there's only one more warning uttered before the barrier is closed between them. ]

"Watch yourself, Gray, and put some space between you and Wallace. That's an order."

[ She knows, in her gut, that those words should sting. That they should piss her off, or make her cry. Instead, however, she laughs——a short, soft peal of genuine laughter. It fleetingly occurs to her that she’s officially lost it. ]

"——Isn’t that the question of the century?”

[ She shakes her head, laughing once more before the smile slowly fades from her features. ]

"If I knew, I’d tell you."

"Even I don't understand it."

[ That's rare. Maria assumes it's the knight in shining armor syndrome. Mike waltzes in, sees the damsel in distress over her own past catching up to her, and puts himself in peril to save her. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. ]

"Gray, from now on you are on constant surveillance. Don't look for it, you're not good enough to catch it. One wrong move, and it won't be Wallace coming to fetch your ass out of the fire. Understood?"

SHIELD was not always the great and powerful agency that they claimed; powerful, yes- but great was an adjective that depended on perspective. Maria Hill had learned the trade not long ago, and improvised when necessary. Now was that time, when a hired mercenary was meeting the director in a park. A piece of paper was given by a gloved hand, with nothing but an address, a name, and a small picture.

"You do realize that if you fail, we take no responsibility..."

It wasn’t that Felix did’t trust Maria. He did. She was one of the few people he knew that he could absolutely trust. Maria, Phil, Melinda. The list was extremely short. And while he himself didn’t necessarily trust everyone on Phil’s team, he knew that Phil did and that was good enough for Felix at the moment. As far as other agents went, his closes friends had died or been traitors. Phil and Melinda were really all that were left. There were a handful of lower level agents that had proved themselves but apart from that there was nothing that Felix was sure of.

Felix started washing vegetables in the sink and he shook his head slightly. “Honestly I don’t know, Maria. I could give you some names but I wouldn’t be sure. I don’t really trust myself right now…” He sighed. “Sterling…Hammond…” He’d been so wrong about so many things it was going to take a while before he could trust himself with people again. He at least had a little more time, more time to heal up and pull things together. And then what? Go back? Was there anything to go back to? Felix dried off the veggies and started to chop them up.

"Give them anyway. Stark and I can check them out." Privatizing world peace she would begrudgingly would admit he did well. Maria got along with Pepper alright- with the rest of the world, however, getting along wasn't her top priority. That was a job for a team of several top notch lawyers. "I'm sure of a few. Mike Wallace is clean, Ward is definitely not. Coulson should have spotted that one, but---." They should have spotted a lot. "I've caught up with a few agents on the side. Juliette Gray is on my watch list, but she's being vouched for. I'll check on Sterling, and send Wallace to check on Hammond. Agent 13 moved to the CIA. I'm thinking of sending some others there as well."
