How I donate to incarcerated individuals for the holidays:

  • I browse the website writeaprisoner.com to search through profiles of people who are currently incarcerated throughout the country. You can filter your search by location, race, age, sex, etc. I utilize this feature because I typically donate to individuals who are marginalized by race, gender, sexuality, etc.
  • You can also view each person’s charges if you have preferences against donating to folks incarcerated for specific offenses like sexual predation.
  • I check their profile for their institutional e-mail which should be called “JPay.” Click the JPay hyperlink on their profile to be directed to this page which will instruct you on how to write letters and send money through the service.
  • Unfortunately, not every detention center on this site provides access to this service, but most of them do. I do not have experience with other institutional e-mails, but I’m sure most of them work in the same way as JPay.
  • From there, simply create a JPay account or login if you already have one. They pretty much walk you through how to send money and e-mails to a person of your choosing using their Inmate ID# which is listed on their profile under the “Contact” → “By Mail”” section.

There are several other ways to put money on someone’s books, this is just a method that has been proven to work for me personally. Please let me know if you are confused about anything or run into any problems.

in college a teacher explained that criticizing gentrification wasn’t about shaming or blaming the white people that were most likely living in the only apartments they could afford - it was about asking why their living there was inherently valuable. it’s not really about who - it’s about why. why white lives are literally valued more. why is the presence of white people a gentrifying force? what is it about whiteness that elicits immediate value?

And if you look up the stages of gentrification, it usually goes like "artists and teachers and etc move into this neighborhood because its what they can afford" and THEN "developers notice these people and try to capitalize on them."

HOW TO DONATE TO BLM WHEN YOU HAVE NO MONEY

a black woman named zoe amira posted a video on youtube. this video is an hour long and filled with art and music from black creators. it has a ton of ads, and in result will rack up a ton of revenue. 100% of the ad revenue from the video will be dispersed between various blm organizations, including bail-out funds for protesters. it will be split between the following, dependent on necessity

  1. brooklyn bail fund
  2. minnesota freedom fund
  3. atlanta action network
  4. columbus freedom fund
  5. louisville community bail fund
  6. chicago bond
  7. black visions collective
  8. richmond community bail fund
  9. the bail project inc
  10. nw com bail fund
  11. philadelphia bail fund
  12. the korchhinski-parquet family gofundme
  13. george floyd’s family gofundme
  14. blacklivesmatter.com
  15. reclaim the block
  16. aclu
turn off your adblocker and put the video on repeat. do not skip ads. let it play on loop whether you’re listening or not. mute the tab if you need to focus elsewhere. but let. it. play.
youtube will donate to blm for you.

please, please reblog. for people who don’t have money to spare, this is incredibly important information to have.

Today my heart aches at having the knowledge of another black life that was taken away by the police. Tony McDade, a black transgender man, was murdered on the morning of May 27th, 2020 by Tallahassee police in broad daylight. The details are still developing as there is very little media coverage of his death and unfortunately some of the coverage he is receiving is being done by folks misgendering him and invalidating his gender. What is clear though, is that this is another case of police violence against black people (specifically black trans people) that will be purposefully misrepresented and tried to be swept under the rug. We cannot let this happen.

When we say Black Lives Matter, we also need to recognize that EVERY TYPE of Black life matters. This means that Black Trans Lives Matter. We have value and are worthy of living. SAY HIS NAME. REMEMBER HIM. HONOR HIM AND BRING HIM JUSTICE.

Please sign and share this petition to raise awareness and to help bring justice to Tony.

(I am aware there is a video of a bystander’s account of what took place, but I’m not going to link the video because 1. The interviewer did not blur out the face of the man talking about what happened (if you don’t know why people who speak out against police need to have their identities protected, look to all the Ferguson activists who have been targeted over the years) and 2. Both the interviewer and bystander misgender Tony multiple times.)

Just a quick update for anyone who wants to do some further reading, the National Black Justice Coalition released a statement on what happened. You can read it here.

Hey, y’all the Human Rights Campaign also put out a statement if you’d like to read it, click here. As the HRC statement says, on June 3rd there will be a livestream by Equality Florida on both facebook and youtube addressing Tony’s death and steps that we can take to honor him and bring him justice.

Hi everyone, another update here. There is currently a GoFundMe for Tony McDade’s family set up and if you’d like to donate please do so here. The GoFundMe was made on behalf of his family and the expenses will cover funeral costs and grief counseling for his family. I am also attaching two ways you can demand a further investigation into Tony’s death by the Tallahassee Police Department. The first is a number that after texting, will take you to a petition to demand the TPD release important information pertaining to Tony’s death.

[Image description: The top image has a picture of Tony McDade, a light skinned black transgender man wearing a red flannel. His picture is in a golden picture frame overlaying a red tinted map. The text below his picture says “Text ‘Tony McDade’ to 484848 The Tallahassee community is demanding the release of the body camera footage and the arrests of officers involved with Tony’s death. Join the fight.”.

The bottom image has a black background with white text that reads “Call the Tallahassee police department at 850-891-0000 to register concern and to demand a complete investigation and public accounting for what happened to Tony McDade.”. End of image description.]
