Here is a link to the US Restrict Act (commonly known as the TikTok ban) as it is currently written.

Please read the actual bill and share even if you do not live in the United States. The precedents this piece of legislation would set would have far reaching impacts on how the internet is used for everyone in the future.

We've got a problem here. I know most people here probably hate tiktok, and for some good reasons, but believe it or not there's actually a good amount of good on tiktok too.

But this isn't about banning tiktok. That's just a cover for this, given power thanks to Meta (Facebook) lobbyists pretty much paying the United States Government.

For the tldr: This act, while saying it's to insure American's personal information will be safe from foreign powers, it goes much deeper than that.

  • It will give the United States Government the power to remove and ban ANY online service they deem "a security risk" while making it so they do not need just cause and do not need to clarify or release a public statement.
  • It allows them the power to gather American's data without our knowledge or consent and even force us to submit documentation for anything they wish.
  • It protects the government from scrutiny on this, and if you try to speak about it and inform people on what it ACTUALLY allows, they can claim it to be false information and charge you.
  • It prevents you from using a VPN as it's seen as a breach of information security, thus they can charge you.
  • Failure to abide by these "guidelines" can lead to a fine up to ONE MILLION DOLLARS and/or 20 YEARS in prison.
  • And above all it does NOTHING to prevent AMERICAN companies from collecting and selling your data.

And that's not even everything it does. This isn't about banning tiktok. It's about control, taking away our freedom of speech, censorship, and selfish monetary gain. This doesn't just affect tiktok users. This affects ALL Americans, small businesses, communities, and even those that use American online products, like Tumblr.

The US is turning into a fascist regime, where they are slowly but surely stripping away our rights and freedoms even more than they already have. And it terrifies me.

If you're not an American, please share this. We already have a hard enough time knowing what goes on with those in other countries. This could make it all the more difficult.

And if you are an American, share this, then contact your state representative and your state senators. Email, phone, even mailing a physical letter for crying out loud. You can search "who is my representative and senators?" on Google, bing, duck-duck-go, or whatever, and it'll take you to where you can find that out and even how to contact them.

Calmly and professionally tell them that not only do you NOT support the TikTok ban(since that is the cover they are using), but you DO NOT support the Restrict Act.

And let them know that if this bill is to pass, you will be spending all your time and energy supporting their opponents in the PRIMARIES. They do not expect Americans to contact them about this, so not only will they see us going out of our way to contact them, but by saying you'll be supporting their OPPONENTS, they'll have to either listen or have to spend thousands of not millions of dollars in campaigning so they don't lose their nice day paychecks, and to them this is all about money so it'll hit them where it hurts.

It doesn't matter what political party you're on, because BOTH parties in office want this. This is not about sides. This is about the ENTIRE government stripping our rights away so they can keep lining their own pockets.

so was no one was gonna tell me that the painting saturn devouring his son was found painted directly onto the walls of the artist’s home after he died and that it may not even be depicting the greek legend, that’s just the most common interpretation??????

hello????

Not only was it painted on the wall of his house, it was painted on the wall of his dinning room.

Like imagine you go over to your boy's house for dinner and that's across from you while you eat. Like would you say something or just

This is the painting is question by Francisco Goya. Not only was this painting found, but a series of 13 other disturbing pieces of art called his “Black Paintings”. At this point in Goya’s life he had lost his hearing (well most of it) and had moved into a villa where he became a recluse. This was directly after the Napoleonic wars. These paintings were never meant to be found. They were never commissioned and he solely made these for himself.

This is where they think each of those paintings was placed in the house.

Goya really is an interestin figure. For those of you who don’t know, he became extremely famous durin his time for paintins like:

Bright colors, lively faces, high royalty, pink cheeks, an silly poses.

So how did someone who painted such pretty an plain works move on to:

Was it the war? Deafness? Mental illness? Degenerative brain disease? A mix? How did such a man who was so famous, so adored, become a recluse who drew horror/gore on his walls?

Actually, I'd like to clear some things up.

1. Francisco Goya came from a middle class background and the whole reason those early paintings are like that are because he was a court painter. That was basically the only way to gain any form of notoriety when you weren't coming from money, especially when you weren't classically trained. That wasn't necessarily the subject matter he PREFERRED to do originally, it was dictated to him by the royal court.

2. While we can't speak on the intents and meanings behind his private murals found posthumously, as Goya was a very guarded and solitary person, it's very obvious in his public works that he was DEEPLY affected by his time in the Napoleonic wars. His darker, gorier, and frightening works were specifically produced to evoke pathos about the horrors of war. There's a series of prints of his called The Disasters of War and he was well known for paintings of massacres. It's not a stretch to argue that he was motivated to produce political commentary and gain sympathy from his audience for the injustices of the world.

He asked me when I fell in love with him and I knew it sounded dramatic to say the moment I saw him, so I told him this story of my grandma who had Alzheimer's- she forgot her name and the words for fruit and food, she forgot her address and how to use the washroom, all her life lost to the disease. The only thing she remembered was her son's name and when that began to fade, the one thing she always remembered was that she loved him, even in illness, even in insanity. She saw this 6 foot 2 man with a scrubby beard and she didn't know him but she said she trusted him, she asked him to hold her hand when she died. When does memory end and love begin? All I know is- she loved him before she remembered him.

You know how canaries were historically brought into coal mines, because if the mine was full of carbon monoxide the canary would die first and the miners would be able to escape before they died too?

I just found the greatest thing.

This is a canary resuscitator.

When the miners notice the canary getting sick with carbon monoxide poisoning, they can close that circular hatch so no more gas gets into the canary cage, and open the valve on that oxygen tank to keep the canary breathing. In other words, they made a spacesuit for birds.

By immediately giving the canary access to clean air, the miners can save it from the poison. The bird lives. To be clear, this is not for economic purposes, this was specifically created because the miners felt bad and wanted to save the bird.

Isn’t that just the perfect demonstration of what humans are like? We started sacrificing small creatures to save ourselves, and then felt bad and spent our valuable resources on saving the critters too. Because yeah the canary was the only way to test for CO, but it’s a living creature too, dammit!

I learnt something today that I think is just beautiful. My grandmother was a very sick woman and pretty much housebound for the last of her life.  She derived great pleasure from watching her neighbour’s backyard chickens.  She adored these chickens.  Every time I called, she had new chicken drama to tell me—think Linda Belcher and the raccoons.   It turns out that at some point, their neighbour was no longer able to have chickens because due to a disability he could no longer afford to keep them.  My grandfather, upon learning this, immediately used his spending money to keep the neighbour in both chickens and chicken feed so that my grandmother would have chickens to watch since my grandfather didn’t have time to keep chickens at their home. He did this for ten years, guys.  TEN YEARS he secretly funded his neighbour’s backyard chickens so that my grandmother would have chickens to watch every day until the day she died.   That’s true love.
