Ive noticed recently that my generation has... no concept of what the various economic classes actually are anymore. I talk to my friends and they genuinely say things like "at least i can afford a middle class lifestyle with this job because i dont need a roommate for my one bedroom apartment" and its like... oughh

You guys, middle class doesnt mean "a stable enough rented roof over your head," it means "a house you bought, a nice car or two, the ability to support a family, and take days off and vacations every year with income to spare for retirement savings and rainy days." If all you have is a rented apartment without a roommate and a used car, you're lower class. That's lower class.

And i cant help but wonder if this is why you get kids on tumblr lumping in doctors and actors into their "eat the rich" rhetoric: economic amnesia has blinded you to what the class divides actually are. The real middle class lifestyle has become so unattainable within a system that relies upon its existence that theyve convinced you that those who can still reach it are the elites while your extreme couponing to afford your groceries is the new normal.

Middle class is being able to live 3 months comfortably without a paying job.

  • listen if you don't have an income that means
  • your shelter cost including utilities is 30% or less (I realize that I have eliminated so many of you just with this one thing)
  • you never EVER have to put off going to the dentist for your routine cleaning
  • you've been watching your savings grow every month and you haven't had to dip into it for more than a year now
  • you have a car, and it's either fairly new or a car you cherish and so you have held onto it because ohana means family and it's in good shape and it suddenly not starting is annoying but not a reason to start a go fund me
  • and you go on vacations every year (maybe not overseas, but you can get away) -- listen to me. you've been boiled like frogs. you are lower class. i'm not even finished the list. people are out there thinking restaurant workers getting $25 an hour is extravagance, but that's $3750 a month before taxes and average rent for a one bedroom apartment here is $1866 a month and internet is $125 and cell phone is $75 and electricity is $250 and we haven't even discussed what Loblaws is charging for a single avocado ($1.99, on special this week) and gas is $1.37 a liter so maybe we should put that avocado back, huh? because we've spent $3500-odd dollars and haven't even put gas in the car yet and i didn't deduct taxes, EI, and CPP

Do you live in the USA? Do you need assistance with utilities, finding legal help, or a help with your pet bills in your area? Don't know where to start?

I'd like to introduce you to my Aunt Bertha, and your Aunt Bertha, too!

Aunt Bertha, also known as findhelp.org, is a human sourced website that compiles all community assistance programs. They organize things from who qualifies (ex: elderly, LGBTQA+, etc.)

And guess what? Aunt Bertha can even sort by low cost and no cost resources! She's got so many selection options and almost everything you can think of, and she even tells you when places are open, how to contact them, etc.

If you are struggling or need help and don't know where to turn in your community for help, ask Aunt Bertha and she'll tell you what she knows.

She'll even send you emails from herself, Aunt Bertha, in case you are in a dangerous situation and asking for help.

i love how garnet and pearl are just continuing to use the name of their infamous guerilla military organization while their current jobs are fighting lv4 rpg monsters and giving each other basket weaving seminars. and steven has no context for this and just thinks of "The Crystal Gems" as basically the name for his mom's side of the family. so he walks up to lapis and says "you should hang out with me and my treehouse friends, the Viet Cong!"

just so it shows up in the notes: this is an extremely good thing, which is why you will see the internet/cell companies revolt against it-- it will prevent them from selling your data to spamcall companies and selectively throttling their competitor's sites, among other things.

also remember that the internet has basically replaced phone service entirely now, with most phones now simply operating via VOIP. legislating the internet the same way as landlines were is really a no-brainer, it's the same service in a slightly different form.

OK Tumblr Geriatric Ward, let’s talk about your posture-

there are things you should be doing now to prevent yourself from starting to look like 🥀

Why does it matter? Future you would like to avoid the pain, limited motion, and fall risk that goes along with worsening posture.

What’s the focus?

1. Keep the flexibility in your spine

2. Stretch the muscles in the front

3. Strengthen the muscle in the back

Here are some simple things you can do daily while sitting and when you get up to go into the bathroom or the kitchen

Keep the flexibility by doing these repeated movements: 10 repetitions several times a day

The goal is to give yourself a double or triple chin. Keep your nose pointing forward, don’t let it tip up or down

Thoracic extension- use a chair with a seat back that comes up to the level of your shoulder blades. Try to bend back over the top of the chair without arching away from the seat back and without extending your neck. If the pressure from the top of the chair is uncomfortable you can place a towel there

Stretch the muscles in the front by using a door frame. This one will feel good afterwards

If this isn’t enough of a stretch you can do one side at a time. If you have the right arm up step forward with the right foot and turn slightly to the left. Then do it on the other side.

Strengthen the muscles in the back by squeezing your shoulder blades together for a count of 10 and then repeating 10 times. You can do this several times a day Hint: Don’t lift your shoulder blades up

There are lots more exercises for strengthening your back muscles but this is a good starting point and easy to do. I like doing it while driving

Tips:
  • Do the best you can
  • If it hurts stop
  • Envision future you saying thank you each time you do one of the exercises

NOTE: I can do most of these with the cerebral palsy. In fact, a lot of these little exercises are automatically part of my physical therapy. My problem is I already have hyperlordosis, spine arthritis, and cervicogenic headache. These have helped me at least try to have a posture.

I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW GOOD THIS ADVICE IS

Which ones of these arbitrary trauma-induced rules do you follow?

  1. No spending money, ever. what if you need it later and your life depends on it.
  2. Assume that all strangers are 3 seconds close to becoming hostile. fawn to keep them friendly.
  3. No delegating tasks. no telling other people to do things you could potentially do yourself. what if they mess up.
  4. Assume that everyone will consider you a burden if you do 1 single mistake that inconveniences them. do all that is possible to not make that mistake.
  5. Do not admit when things are going wrong. wait until theres no other option but to ask for help, and even then consider not doing that.
  6. Always act like you're okay. not doing so might make you seem 'not normal' and 'accused of being crazy and unstable'.
  7. Do anything for friends, even if it sounds weird, dodgy, illegal. you want to prove that you're fun and easy going and helpful and useful and extremely cool with anything.
  8. Never let it show if you're suspicious of someone. never say out loud that you think their intentions are bad. that might set them off.
  9. If hurt, hide and isolate. Do not let anyone see you hurt.
  10. Do not ask help for problems you feel are your own responsibility to solve. Even if you don't see yourself solving them successfully. If you can't do it, assume nobody can help you.
  11. Help others to try and build positive relationships. Don't accept help so you don't end up relying on them for anything.
  12. Do not start things that involve help or participation from other people. People are not reliable.
  13. Assume that institutions, government, police, social services, and any kind of groups of people are all considering you a nuisance, and would attack you on sight, in every single situation. Never rely on them or assume they would do anything else.
  14. No arguing, confronting, or standing up for yourself unless the situation is absolutely unsurvivable otherwise. Lay low until doing otherwise is seriously damaging your mental health and ability to live.
  15. Give up on hopeful social encounters before they disappoint you. If you have to interact with people, assume the worst is about to happen.
  16. No allowing yourself to idealize, or dream of positive future with people. It's a trap and your expectations need to be either extremely realistic or low.
  17. Assume that fancy and expensive things don't exist for you. Despise them and get away from them.
  18. No comparing yourself and your life to how other people live. It causes depression and despair. Other people's lives and standards of living are none of your business.
  19. Do not showcase any skill or brag about any achievement. Jealous people can destroy you for satisfaction.
  20. Assume people think the worst of you and don't consider changing their mind. Just try to keep out of their way.
  21. Do not display anger. You don't want to be called insane or get arrested. You don't know what people could potentially blame you for if you're openly angry. But other angry people are dangerous and you need to get away from them.

If you follow more than half of these, you have a trauma-induced problem. These are not normal or healthy. These are not developed in a healthy environment. These are extremely self-protective, isolating, ruled by terror of the world and the people living in it. If you follow these, something bad has been done to you.
