Quick Sleep Tips

Sleep is so so so important. You have to be awake in your classes in order to take the best notes and retain the most information. I’m not really one to talk seeing as I get about 5 hours of sleep a night but these are the tips I’ve found useful when I take the time to use them:

1) Sleep Cycle App

This app tracks your movement while you sleep to wake you up at your lightest sleep stage so that you wake up more refreshed and energized than if you were woken from a deep sleep. It can be found for Android and iPhone.

2) This Amazing Website

This website basically tells you when to go to bed and wake up based on 90 minute sleep cycles. I use it all the time and even if you only get like 4 hours of sleep, if you follow the sleep patterns, you actually feel well rested.

3) Don’t Eat Before Bed

Try not to eat or drink anything besides water or maybe chamomile tea within an hour of when you plan to go to bed. If you have a late night snack, your body will have a harder time falling asleep because it will be trying to digest your food.

4) Focus your Thoughts

Okay this is going to sound weird but when I need to fall asleep, I pretend that I’m dreaming already. This helps me to calm my mind and avoid thinking about everything from the day. This may not work for everyone but it works for me when I really can’t sleep.

5) Another App

Okay a lot of people will tell you that you need to unplug and stay off your phone an hour before bed, but that’s really unrealistic for most people. So this app (sorry I don’t know about the iOS version) tints your screen to eliminate the blue light which is what keeps you up and awake. It’s amazing and you can set it how you like. This prevents your phone from being too bright when you really need to use it at night.

6) Read with Low Light

Turn on a soft lamp or cover a lamp with a t-shirt or scarf to mute the light a little bit and then read a calm book (ie. nothing thats action packed that will stress you out or elevate your heart rate) and just read until your eyes get tired. I, being such a huge bibliophile, still have all of my first grade chapter books like Junie B Jones and Amber Brown and things like that which I’ll go through quickly to help me fall asleep. They’re familiar and comforting.

That’s all, I hope someone finds this helpful. I’ll make more posts like these when I get wifi at my house again since you can’t link things on mobile. What do you all do to fall asleep?
