I rarely criticize my wife, but when I do, it’s spoken directly to her, in private, and with love.

I don’t speak negatively about my wife to other people. Not because she’s perfect (which is an impossible and unfair standard) but because she deserves a husband she can trust. To say anything about my wife that I wouldn’t say to her face, would be a betrayal of that trust.

I never want her to spend a single moment worrying about the way I talk about her when she’s not around.

I DON’T SPEAK NEGATIVELY ABOUT MY WIFE TO OTHER PEOPLE. NOT BECAUSE SHE’S PERFECT (WHICH IS AN IMPOSSIBLE AND UNFAIR STANDARD) BUT BECAUSE SHE DESERVES A HUSBAND SHE CAN TRUST. TO SAY ANYTHING ABOUT MY WIFE THAT I WOULDN’T SAY TO HER FACE, WOULD BE A BETRAYAL OF THAT TRUST. 

I NEVER WANT HER TO SPEND A SINGLE MOMENT WORRYING ABOUT THE WAY I TALK ABOUT HER WHEN SHE’S NOT AROUND.

Because I’ve realised that absolutely nobody is looking out for your happiness apart from you. Nobody else will wholeheartedly support you no matter what. They all have an agenda. Even the ones you love. Be careful of it.

I remember riding down the highway from the storm in traffic with water covering half the tires a terrified 7 year old 😓

New Orleans is the city of my heart – the only home I love as much as New York. People ask me, sometimes, why in my writing I depict post-Katrina NOLA as missing some fundamental part of itself. That’s because these photos were only the beginning. Not only did they NOT help while people were suffering, and vilify the survivors for… surviving, but after the waters receded these motherfuckers used Katrina as an opportunity to rid the city of many of its poor black residents – the very people who made New Orleans the hustling, creative, delicious, powerful place it was. Oh, some made it back… but not enough. I pray NOLA will get its soul back, someday. But more than that, I pray that one day there will be a reckoning.

Beautiful #Ramadan tradition in the old city of #jerusalem. The callers who go from house to house in the early hours of the morning waking up each family by name for Qiyam and s7oor. They do so in a poetic form. Imagine being woken up daily in this beautiful way. This tradition has continued from generation to generation. Bless them #palestine
