S*langelo is not good rep and I’ll tell you why

It was obvious that after nico coming out rick wanted to get him into a relationship as soon as possible (because why would you have a queer character who’s not a in a relationship that’s like the whole point right?? 🙄 /j) so instead of developing Nico’s character and going into how he felt being a queer man in a time he was not familiar with after being forcibly outed in front of someone he had yet to fully trust, Rick decided to force him in a relationship with someone he barely knows.

Another problem with s*langelo is that it gets more credit than what’s due. It is one of the most popular ships in the fandom with only a few chapters of canon interactions. The fetishization of nico and will in the fandom is horrible. They are constantly being either sexualized or infantilized by the fandom and if you go back far enough to see the treatment of nicos character pre house of hades release and after….it’s jarring he went from the badass mysterious character that was never gonna be as a popular as Percy to an uwu smol boy being fetishized by straight girls in the fandom

Nicos coming out scene was disgusting in every way shape and form a force outing is definitely not the right way to go for your first ever queer character rick sorry but it’s not especially not a VIOLENT forced outing in front of other people

And will was definitely a character who even though we’d seen him before kinda just felt shoehorned into the story simply to be a love interest because let’s be honest as much as people love to say “wills not just a love interest!!” He kinda is… before being with nico he only had a few pages of canon scenes. He could’ve died in tlo and at that point no one would’ve cared and I hate to say it but he could’ve died at the end of boo and few people would’ve cared.

Idk this post was long and probably doesn’t make much sense I just feel like the only thing solangelo has going for them is fetishized fanon content

And the problem is that Rick can and HAS written much better lgbt rep (fierrochase) he just decided his first ever queer character gets the shitty relationship and storyline

Toph’s lips are moving, her mouth forming the words, but Sokka doesn’t hear the sound. Or rather he doesn’t want to.

“I’m sorry,” she says, which is a rare occurrence from her, but he knows she doesn’t mean it.

“No, you’re not,” he mutters. His thumbs twirl in a meaningless circle on the desk, and he rubs them harder together. Maybe he’ll get a splinter. Physical pain would be better than this.

“How many times, Snoozles? There is absolutely no way you’re coming with me, it’s too dangerous for the girls!”

“So we leave them here, for Spirit’s sakes! They can stay with your parents!”

Toph shoots him a look. He knows he’s playing with fire, but there’s no way he’s staying behind while she’s off in Ba Sing Se fighting criminals with who knows how much power. Not even for their daughters. She has to know that.

“They have to stay with you,” she says through gritted teeth. Her hands are on the desk too - they’re barely a foot away from each other - but this suggestion, this idea of splitting up, has separated them far more than space ever could.

“No, they don’t. They’re old enough to understand our jobs, T, which means they’re old enough to understand that there is no way in hell I am leaving you.”

“My God, it’s for three days!” she yells, smacking her hands down into the wood hard enough to to get a splinter herself. Her eyes flash, her cheeks slightly tinged, and he knows he’s struck home. She can play this game all she wants but he’s won.

He crosses his arms and stares her down. “We either go together or not at all.”

“I go. Alone,” she says, crossing her arms back at him. Her voice isn’t as firm as it was. The air is charged with tension.

“Together.”

“Alone.”

“Together!”

“Alone! I say al-“

He cuts her off with his lips, pressing them against hers and silencing her words. The kiss is tight, pushing so many things out of him and into her. His eyes open for a fraction of a second and he sees that hers are closed, her forehead free of the worry lines that usually crease her skin. She is soft and calm and gentle when she kisses. When she kisses him.

He breaks away first, his hand paused in the moment of tucking her hair behind her chin. Her lips are swollen and pursed, like she can’t believe he had the nerve to persuade her like that and she can’t believe it actually worked.

“Together?” he whispers.

She laughs into his mouth and tugs on his neck to kiss him again. “Together,” she says in between breaths. “But I can’t promise there won’t be consequences for your actions here today, Councilman.”

“I can live with that. So long as you do.”
