A little work in progress (AND bonus adorbs!) of our good and gracious Lady to combat my perfectionism. It didn’t like that we had to recover from a cold and still can not draw as much or as quickly. And I hereby lovingly tell it to take SEVERAL seats. 😌

For all those who could use a few words of comfort: Your feelings are valid. Your struggle is valid. Finding things hard is not a sign of weakness. We all need a lot of courage every day. Being creative takes courage. Trying and trying again takes courage. Just being a human being in this world takes courage. We all are giving it our best shot- and that is always enough! Take care, breathe deep and lots of love! 💕

We all know I love the concept of knight!Alcina so much that I made it a key backstory point in Novitiate, but I don't think I have mentioned before the sheer abundance of serotonin the idea of a 18th-century Pirate Captain Lady Dimitrescu x Mermaid Maiden AU brings me.

I mean, there is all the fun of an all-female crew of pirates sailing the seven seas and completely ravaging the lands blind of their riches - the glorious decadence of the gold, the wine, the marauding, the women. Perhaps even a fantasy element of the likes of a curse that causes those loyal to the feared Captain to become ravenous for blood in their own right, which Alcina suffered as a trade-off for a Crow Goddess' protection and miraculous cure of her illness. Besides, the fashion! Leather hats with feathers, elaborate stays worn over fine chemises, bloodied blades and pistols to tie it all together!

And, of course, one cannot forget the horrific romance of passing through treacherous waters after an ambush goes awry and, in her exhaustion, falling for a mermaid's song, only for the tables to flip when Alcina realizes she would much rather keep this pretty maiden baring her fangs and pulling her underwster as her wife prisoner, instead.

So we get an enemy-to-lovers, at-each-others'-throats variation of their relationship where Alcina gets to indulge her villainous side for a bit while Maria is feral, pissed, and very conflicted over being captured by a woman both so arrogant yet so attractive - meaning they act like bickering lovers from the moment they meet and there is a lot of sexual tension building up as they make the long trip back to Europe, until they inevitably cave into their affections on accident one night and end up married by Alcina's quartermaster the week after. Then there are the tender scenes like Alcina building saltwater pools and countless baths in her ancestral castle so Maria doesn't miss the sea too badly when they spend the season on land, or our maiden keeping the Captain company all throughout the night when they sail through mercurial weather and Alcina's expertise on handling her ship is needed for hours on end, and even the infamously perverse Countess targetting a specific trade route because she knows it carries all her wife's favorite lotions for not drying out in the summer sun.

Pirate queen and her consort mermaid proceed to commit highly illegal acts while adopting three equally-reprehensible young ladies they meet in their journeys: a merchant's daughter who was to hang for murdering an unwanted suitor, an aspiring buccaneer hoping the climb the ranks, and even a stowaway duchess who grew tired of noble ideas on womanhood.

okay after doing a little reading, alcina was probably in love with miranda in a very toxic, mostly unrequited way. she named her daughters alphabetically B thru D (her being a) and EVA was meant to be the last child. it explains the crib in her private chambers - that wasn’t for rose, she only ever had a portion of her anyway. it explains why she is so intense abt miranda and resents the title of ‘siblings’ with miranda’s children. SHE doesn’t want to be seen in that same sense, which we also see from her journal. on top of this, miranda and she oversaw the creation of her daughters not in a dungeon but in a bedroom which denotes a certain affection toward what the subjects would become. she keeps one of miranda’s feathers by her notes on the girls’ birth. they were co-moms, and alcina believed when eva came back into a vessel that they would co-mother and live together.  like. alcina is canonically midway through a painting of mother miranda with three cherubim who are bela, cass, and dani. she’s sewing them all into a little family in her head.

Alcina’s relationship to Miranda is very intriguing when looked at from this angle, and it explains her loyalty to the end.

Sure! They’re very weird.

  1. My dad regularly sings to my mom about how much he loves her while standing exactly in the way of whatever she’s trying to do
  2. My parents didn’t marry until I was 4 and they regularly forget that they’re spouses. They generally refer to themselves as partners
  3. My mom proposed to my dad by yelling at him from a room away that her taxes were fucked and they had to get married to which my father replied “this is how I always dreamed you’d ask me!” and pretending to swoon
  4. My dad appears as an actor in the movie Swoon, supposedly an important piece of queer cinema 
  5. My parents were both punks in their youth
  6. When I came home for thanksgiving with a mohawk, unannounced, my mom started crying because I looked “so handsome” and “just like your dad” and kept petting my head 
  7. My dad only says “that’s my boy” to me when I say something gay about men
  8. My mom and dad have the same taste in women but opposite taste in men
  9. One time we were watching a movie set in Chicago and my mom turned to my dad, and in the most sentimental mom voice, said “Chicago honey! We haven’t been there since the anarchist convention!”
