Prayer Request

Please pray for my sister. She came home from the Convent in autumn to stay, and she has been in utter turmoil since. She is very depressed, having a lot of anxiety, and is not acting like herself. I think she feels angry at God because she spent half her life working towards becoming a Sister and now she has no direction; she’s lost. Please PLEASE pray for her. Sometimes I feel like I don’t recognize her anymore.

prison slave labor is so fucked up

especially when you see people’s reactions

“they’re technically getting paid so it’s not slavery”

“if they didn’t want to be there they shouldn’t be a criminal”

like what fragile fucking bubble do these people live in and where did their humanity go

“slavery is perfectly legal as punishment for a crime under the constitution, idiots”

oh my gooooood

Hi Father, I have kind of an odd question, I'm not sure if you'll have an answer. My husband mentioned "upgrading" the diamond in my engagement ring as an anniversary gift and also the possibility of exchanging his band for a more comfortable one. However, at our wedding the engagement ring and wedding bands were all in the ring box and blessed. I told him we might not be able to do any exchanges but didn't know. Since they have been blessed, what does that mean for his idea to upgrade?

Hello,

First, many blessings and heartfelt prayers for you and your husband on the occasion of your wedding anniversary!

Oh yes, you may certainly alter the rings, do an upgrade, and in other ways modify what you wear as far as a wedding band.

Simply take the upgraded or modified ring, or even new wedding bands if they were purchased new, and ask your priest to bless them.

We priests get this request all the time from couples, especially when the old wedding rings no longer fit and the couple wishes to purchase completely new rings. God bless and take care, Fr. Angel

Hi Father, thanks for your response and your congratulations! I had one more question about this... (sorry!) In order to upgrade, we have to trade in our original ring/diamond. So we won't have possession of it anymore and I guess that's where my main worry comes from. Since we would be giving the original blessed object back to the business, would that pose a problem?

You: I sit by my crush during Mass so we can hold hands during the Our Father.

Me, an intellectual: The lay faithful are not to use the orans posture during the Mass.

why is this? i’ve grown up holding hands/raising your hands during the Our Father. my mother, who is an incredibly devout cradle Catholic does it still to this day. at least half the people i see at mass do this. i’ve never heard anything saying that you shouldn’t until now, and no one explains why you shouldn’t.

I think it had to do with it being a gesture only the priest is permitted to make, but I can’t remember exactly. I do know that @fatherangel made a post on it a long while ago, though. Maybe search his blog?

I personally do not have a problem with people raising their hands during the Our Father, assuming the “orans” position. However, I do not care for people reaching out to their neighbor to  hold hands during the Our Father.

The Our Father is the beginning of the Communion Rite, and it is a time for prayer at Mass to become more “vertical.”

As I see it, the Communion Rite is a time for personal, singular adoration of God, and preparing to receive the Blessed Sacrament with an intimate and God-centered focus. The Communion Rite is definitely the time to give people “their space” and let them close their eyes if need be to imagine Jesus at the Last Supper inviting them to partake of His Sacrament.

Also, in our germ-phobic society, many are traumatized at the idea of holding hands and spreading the colds and viruses that come along during the Fall and Winter. There are also plenty of people with social anxieties who feel forced into holding hands at the Our Father.

People should feel free to avoid hand holding, especially if they wish to assume the orans position of lifting their hands to the Father. But let me say clearly that it is also not wrong or sinful to hold hands. It’s just not the best gesture for that part of the liturgy. God bless, Fr. Angel

Good morning, Father. Do you have a good prayer for those who struggle with lust?

Avatar

I can’t think of a prayer offhand, so I composed one for you. Here it is:

“Loving Creator, in Jesus’ holy Name I praise you and bless you for all your works, especially for forming us from the dust of the earth and breathing life into our bodies.

I exalt you also because when our race fell away from your grace, your Son Jesus took on our mortal flesh and was like us in all things but sin. Through His precious Blood and saving atonement, He has raised up what was fallen and merited for us the grace to be your adopted sons and daughters.

Thank you also for the gifts of our human nature, so that with mind and heart, with spirit and strength, we might adore you, the one True God, and love our neighbor as ourselves. Thank you also for the gifts of sight, of hearing, and for the ability to embrace and to love others. Your Holy Spirit enters our bodies and transforms them into your Temple, so that you might dwell deep within us and perfect the gifts of our human nature.

Turn to me, now, and come to my aid. I struggle under the weight of temptation, and the wounds of original sin in my flesh. Like your Apostle Paul, I often do, not the good things which I wish to do, but the wrong which I know I must turn away from in order to serve you better.

My spirit is willing, but my flesh is weak. And so in trust and joy, I come to you, Father most holy, and through the intercession of Mary and Joseph, ask you to graciously receive my repentant heart. Help me to give you glory in the body, this body which you have given to me.

And if through pride or blindness, I fall before my passions, I call upon your grace to keep me from despair or brooding. With firm purpose of amendment, keep me hopeful, and keep me trusting.

May I never doubt your love and your power to work through my weakness, for through my weakness, your power reaches perfection. Through the same Christ, our Lord. Amen.”

God bless and take care, Fr. Angel

“A woman emailed me last week to complain that her priest has given three homilies — three, in a row, Sunday after Sunday — on “inclusivity.” Yes, the brave warrior for Christ stood before his church and fearlessly waged war against the great spiritual danger of non-inclusiveness. This is the real problem we face, you see. There’s not enough including going on. It’s not that our families and marriages are falling apart. It’s not that millions of babies are being killed. It’s not that America is full of porn addicts. It’s not that our children are being sucked into a heathen culture of decadence and moral degradation. It’s the lack of inclusiveness. The road to Hell is paved with people who weren’t appropriately inclusive. That’s what this priest thinks, anyway. A priest who became a priest for reasons that are as unclear to me as they likely are to him.

Christianity in America is so hollow because our fearless leaders have decided that it’s better to keep people in church by putting them to sleep than to draw them deeper into their faith with the full force of unvarnished truth. So, they drone on about friendship and tolerance and recycling, while Satan prowls about devouring souls. And Satan has never had such an easy time finding souls to eat — it’s a veritable soul buffet down in Hell — because most Christians never hear about Satan or Hell in the first place.

People need to be woken up. They need to be offended. Offend us, pastor. Make us uncomfortable. Make me look at my reflection and see the things I’d rather not see. Pull me out of my comfort zone. Make me angry at myself, or at you for making me angry at myself. Can you stand to have people angry at you? If not, I believe you have chosen the wrong profession — and the wrong religion.

…whoever wants a comfortable Christianity, does not want Christianity at all.”
