why you need to watch next to normal

next to normal is a rock musical about a woman with bipolar disorder and how it and her attempts to heal affect her and her family. other themes in this musical include: learning how to grieve and cope with a loss, suicide, drug abuse, undiagnosed mental illness, doubting reality, and the ethics in modern psychiatry

and here’s why next to normal is so special, without giving away any spoilers:

  • it treats mental illnesses with respect and it doesn’t dance around anything. she is bipolar and that’s what the show is about
  • her family members all also have their own issues and each of them learn how to start healing and ask for/accept help and not cut themselves off from each other and that admitting you have a mental illness is not by any means a sign of weakness
  • her psychiatrist is not a villain. he’s just a doctor trying his best to help her with the methods available. an actual quote the psychiatrist says about the main character’s bipolar disorder: “you have a chronic illness. like diabetes or hypertension, if you leave it untreated, it could be catastrophic.”
  • it won the pulitzer prize for drama and is only eighth musical to ever do so (winners average out to one musical per decade; the last winner was rent back in 1996. was next to normal the best musical of the 2000’s? who’s to say)
  • this show is brutal and intense and deals with a lot of dark stuff and if you can’t handle the themes mentioned up above please do not watch it (but it’s also very funny and just. real. if you have a mental illness or disorder there’ll be a lot of moments where you’re like “same”)

On some real shit, I do not fuck with people who ride those boat things at the carnival. People who get on those do not give a fuck about life, they don’t care about you, ya mama or your kids. They literally have nothing to lose. You don’t care about life so there’s no need for me to fight you because you’re not going to give a damn about my face.

BITCHHHHHHH. I got on this shit when I was 12. Wasn’t no bar, no protection, nothing in that shit. I didn’t realize until it was too late. You couldn’t pay me to ever get on this shit ever again in my life. We were in Landover, this shit almost smooth flipped my ass to Baltimore. No. Never again. 

12? I got on this bitch when I was 21 and had my head in my ex’s shoulder the ENTIRE time. Screaming like a bih too. Nope. Never again. I was praying to the gravity gods the entire time.

?????? All it does is swing back and forth???? I don’t understand the concern??????

Gentrification creates a stifling homogeneity in urban areas that makes it less suited for the everyday lives of the lower class and more suited towards the leisure and tourism of those with expendable income.

An old, decrepit laundromat gets replaced by an upscale bakery? And people are mad? It’s not that the poor hate organic vegan cupcakes, it’s that most of us don’t have a way to do laundry in our own home.

Run-down corner stores replaced by hand-made designer clothing boutiques? We don’t hate your eco-fabric shawl, but I can’t eat that for dinner after work like I could have a can of beans I grabbed from that corner store when I don’t have time to take the bus to the real grocery store after work.

What gentrification brings in and of itself is not typically bad, it’s that gentrification brings institutions of leisure and pleasure and makes it so that the poor have to go farther out of their way for basic necessities. It turns low-income living spaces into local tourist attractions. It can even create food deserts by putting restaurants, grocery stores, etc. in that the majority of the lower class cannot afford.

Imagine if someone totally renovated your house and turned it into a mini theme park - they took away your sleeping space, where you prepare food, where you clean yourself and get ready for your day, and replaced it with things that will please people who are visiting, who have their own homes they can go back to, who are here not for their entire life but just as a distraction from their otherwise mundane existence. It’s not that you hate theme parks, it’s not like you’ve never been to a theme park and vow to never visit one again. It’s just that you need to live! To survive! And the leisure of those who have more than you should not invalidate your existence.
