Haters gonna hate

@ohnoghostbabies

I'm 26 and I live in the Midwest. I'm an Ottoman studies graduate student, and I spend most of my free time reading or playing vidya. I love getting tattoos, and I love seeing the work that other people have had done. I have fairly eclectic tastes in film, music, literature, games, etc., etc...

1979-1990 Anime Primer Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)

In the distant future, an apocalyptic war known as the Seven Days of Fire has laid waste to the Earth. The remains of humanity are forced to live in the shadow of the Sea of Decay, an encroaching toxic forest inhabited by mutated insects. Nausicaä, the kind and heroic princess of the peaceful Valley of the Wind, has an unusual affinity for these insects, particularly the giant Ohmu. When her home is caught between two warring nations, Nausicaä’s ability to convene with nature may be the only thing that can put a stop to the bloodshed.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is the second feature film to be directed by Hayao Miyazaki and the first to be based entirely on his own original work. Nausicaä sent shock waves throughout the anime industry upon its release in 1984 and set the stage for the formation of the world famous Studio Ghibli not long afterwards. In Nausicaä, Miyazaki would work not only with musician Joe Hisaishi (who would become a lifetime collaborator) but Gainax’s Hideaki Anno, who was given the task of depicting the gruesome Giant Warrior who appears in the movie’s latter half. More than any historical significance, however, the most enduring aspect of the film is its titular heroine, who set the gold standard for Ghibli heroines for decades to come.
