the funny thing is that i don't think younger people - and i mean those under the age of 40 - really have a grasp on how many of today's issues can be tied back to a disastrous reagan policy:

  1. war on drugs: reagan's aggressive escalation of the war on drugs was a catastrophic policy, primarily targeting minority communities and fueling mass incarceration. the crusade against drugs was more about controlling the Black, Latino and Native communities than addressing the actual problems of drug abuse, leading to a legacy of broken families and systemic racism within the criminal justice system.
  2. deregulation and economic policies: reaganomics was an absolute disaster for the working class. reagan's policies of aggressive tax cuts for the rich, deregulation, and slashing social programs were nothing less than class warfare, deepening income inequality and entrenching corporate greed. these types of policies were a clear message that reagan's america was only for the wealthy elite and a loud "fuck you" to working americans.
  3. environmental policies: despite his reputation being whitewashed thanks to the recovery of the ozone layer, reagan's environmental record was an unmitigated disaster. his administration gutted critical environmental protections and institutions like the EPA, turning a blind eye to pollution and corporate exploitation of natural resources. this blatant disregard for the planet was a clear sign of prioritizing short-term corporate profits over the future of the environment.
  4. AIDS crisis: reagan's gross neglect of the aids crisis was nothing short of criminal and this doesn't even begin to touch on his wife's involvement. his administration's indifference to the plight of the lgbtq+ community during this devastating epidemic revealed a deep-seated bigotry and a complete failure of moral leadership.
  5. mental health: reagan's dismantling of mental health institutions under the guise of 'reform' led directly to a surge in homelessness and a lack of support for those with mental health issues. his policies were cruel and inhumane and showed a personality-defining callous disregard for the most vulnerable in society.
  6. labor and unions: reagan's attack on labor unions, exemplified by his handling of the patco strike, was a blatant assault on workers' rights. his actions emboldened corporations to suppress union activities, leading to a significant erosion of workers' power and rights in the workplace. he was colloquially known as "Ronnie the Union Buster Reagan"
  7. foreign policy and military interventions: reagan's foreign policy, particularly in latin america, was imperialist and ruthless. his administration's support for dictatorships and right-wing death squads under the guise of fighting "communism" showed a complete disregard for human rights and self-determination of other nations.
  8. public health: yes, reagan's agricultural policies actually facilitated the rise of high fructose corn syrup, once again prioritizing corporate profits over public health. this shift in the food industry has had lasting negative impacts on health, contributing to the obesity epidemic and other health issues.
  9. privatization: reagan's push for privatization was a systematic dismantling of public services, transferring wealth and power to private corporations and further eroding the public's access to essential services.
  10. education policies: his approach to education was more of an attack on public education than anything else, gutting funding and promoting policies that undermined equal access to quality education. this was, again, part of a broader agenda to maintain a status quo where the privileged remain in power.

this is just what i could come up with in a relatively short time and i did not even live under this man's presidency. the level at which ronald reagan has broken the united states truly can't be overstated.

He’s right.

Hey, so I put a comment on this, but comments sometimes get lost, so yeah. This is me! This was my post! Some people seem skeptical or confused by this interaction, so I just wanna clarify a few things. First of all, I didn’t just magically know the kid was autistic. His mom told me. We were talking (I’m one of those “inappropriately outgoing” autistics, at least some of the time), and I don’t remember super well, but I think the kid was stimming or something, so his mom was like “Oh yeah, he’s autistic.” I mentioned that I’m autistic too because I think it’s cool for both autistic kids and their parents to see autistic people out and about living our lives, you know? And anyway, it’s a connection, and I think making connections with people is important.

Also, yes, the kid was absolutely right. The kitten, whose name is Robobots (or Bobo for short), was really doing all the work there. I know the socially “normal” thing to do would’ve been to thank me, but thanking Bobo made more sense, because she was the one who let him pet her and nuzzled his hand.

Hope that clears things up! And of course, here’s a picture of Bobo (as she looks now, I don’t have a kitten picture on hand).

Everyone thank Bobo

Thank you Bobo

What is this about the tumblr staff wanting to sell art data to midjourney?

An ex-colleague of mine mentioned yesterday that there may be contacts between Automattic and midjourney in that direction, but nothing is public yet and I don't have any more info. They probably won't have anything specific to share either, since they left the company weeks ago too. That being said:

  • I have no reason to doubt my ex-coworker word, they are a trustworthy person.
  • Tumblr's CEO has been absurdly enthusiastic (comically, even) about AI, and is a big fan of LLMs and 'AI' companies.
  • A deal with midjourney could solve tumblr financial issues (not the same company, but openAi is paying up to 5 million/year to news companies to use their content as training data... tumblr generates several orders of magnitude more content than any newspaper or any media company and it only would need a 20 to 30 million per year deal to be profitable)

So I don't have any extra info yet, but I'm keeping my ears open.

And I just got confirmation from a second ex-colleague that a deal with midjourney has been brewing since months ago. Not any extra details, just that's a real thing.

Shit, I don't see any way for this to happen that doesn't make it an apocalyptic event the size of the porn ban. Fuck.

Shit. This may be pure chance and coincidence, and it's not he is in a position to be able to talk about anything, but seeing prominent staff members announcing they are moving their original photography out of tumblr just two weeks ago seems a pretty significant cue of shit to be about to hit the fan.

Just tested. It’s possible to swap out pictures on already-published posts. So in that case, a solution:

Even if you don’t post your own art anymore, go back to your old stuff and watermark it.

Do it ASAP, before the deal goes through and the scraping begins.

This will not only protect your art, but has the opportunity to fuck over this deal on a pretty large scale. The more of these posts that are glazed or poisoned, the less valuable this deal becomes for tumblr and midjourney.

Share this with everyone. And i do mean everyone.

Today's hearing is beginning. Namibia is starting off

Namibian representative has a kufiya draped over her shoulder

Mentioned Germany committing the first genocide of the 20th century in Namibia, and is now talking about the similarities between Namibia and Palestine

Pointing out that an ICJ ruling helped Namibia's liberation. Other nations had also mentioned this in their presentations

Addressing the Palestinians directly with a message of hope, now passing it over to their second speaker

Namibia is focusing heavily on apartheid

Namibia is asking the court to set a strict time limit for the unconditional end of the Israeli occupation. Also acknowledging Israel's history of defying the UN and the ICJ

Norway is next. I don't know their stance

Talking about severe use of force in Gaza, illegal settlements, displacement and destruction of homes and so on

Talking about Hamas violating international law and needing to be held accountable, but that this does not justify measures taken against the civilian population

Discussing the possibility of this being a de facto annexation as it's been allowed to continue indefinitely

Norway's representative has been mentioning several previous ICJ rulings that are comparable to the current hearing

Quoted Netanyahu to prove that Israel's goal is annexation

second speaker for Noway is up and talking about Norway's full support for a two state solution

Discussing at length the process of Israel joining the UN and their responsibilities as a member state

Mentioning that the Israeli occupation has already been defined as illegal, quoting a Security Council resolution from 1980

Oman's delegation is up next

Accusing the international community of failing Palestinians in achieving their dream of having a free state, and mentioning the severity of the genocide happening in Gaza

Calling for an immediate and unconditional end to all actions, policies, and laws that prevent the Palestinian's right to self-determination

"There is no legal justification for continuing the occupation and denying the right of self-determination"

10 minute break, Pakistan will be first after the court resumes

Pakistan is now presenting

Discussing Pakistan's history of supporting Palestine, and stating that these hearings offer hope to the Palestinian people

Stating bluntly that this is not, if it ever was, a military occupation. It is annexation

Talking about how France previously withdrew over 1 million settlers from Algeria, and that this outnumbers the number of Israeli settlers in the OPT

Talking about the unique status of Jerusalem and how it is holy to all 3 Abrahamic religions, but Christians and Muslims have not had full religious freedom in the city

Discussing support and the necessity for the two state solution

Pakistan just called out the US for voting in favour of ending South Africa's occupation of Namibia in the past, but not doing so for Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories

Drawing parallels between the Namibia case and Palestine

Just stated that if the ICJ refrains from issuing a ruling they will be signaling to other powers that they too could possibly get away with illegal occupation

Indonesian representative is up now. She is wearing a kufiya

Quoting Natanyahu when he stated that no one, not even the Hague, could stop Israel

Did air quotes while mentioning the "rule-based international order"

Stating that the argument that an ICJ ruling would undermine the peace process is null because "there is no peace process to undermine"

"Negotiation with someone holding a gun to your head is not a negotiation"

"Never again means never again"

Indonesia is finished, and I hope I can find a recording of that presentation later.

Qatar is presenting now

"For 75 years the lives of the Palestinian people has been treated as an exception to the rules of humanitarian law"

"Recent events did not occur in a vacuum"

"the so-called peace process is dead"

Talking about how the war in Gaza is being used as a cover for an increase in illegal settlement activity

"Before October 7th Gaza had already been described by the UN secretary general as 'hell on earth' today it is indescribable"

Just spoke about Israel murdering journalists and members of human rights organizations. I don't think I've heard any other delegation mention that

Qatar has finished their presentation by telling the ICJ that the whole world is looking at them, and they hope they take this historic opportunity to end the injustices against the Palestinian people.

Throughout Qatar's presentation the representative followed several comments about Israeli crimes, and other points, by mentioning that more information is included in the folders that Qatar provided the court. I don't know how large the folders are, but it sounds like at the very least Qatar provided more information for every breach of international law they observed, and they also included arguments from other states where the same conclusions were drawn. They came very prepared.

That's the morning hearing finished, afternoon hearing is in 2 hours with presentations from the UK, Slovenia, Sudan, Switzerland, Syria, and Tunisia

Found you.

When I was a kid, I used to look out into the distance and imagine colossal creatures towering over the mountains, too big to possibly notice a tiny human like me.

One day, my grandpa saw me staring out and took me aside.

"Never do that again." he said. "They might look back."

Why do we do the opposite of what our elders tell us? Why is it that we always must learn the hard way? Is that just the way the universe is?

These thoughts ran through my mind as fast as I could process them as I hid behind a massive tree deep in the woods. It was deathly quiet aside for the monstrous crash every few seconds as the thing looked for me. 'Stupid, stupid, stupid!' I shouted at myself in my head. Sure I thought it was just something grandad would say, like an old wives tale. Never did I actually think that this would happen.

Glancing around the side of the tree, I saw a massive grey foot attached to an equally massive leg that rose into the trees. Judging by it's facing it was facing away from me and I took the chance to dash into the denser part of the woods where hopefully the thing wouldn't be able to follow. At least not easily.

The loud crashing that followed was proof enough that it had seen me again as I bobbed between the thick trees. There was a steady incline, so I was likely coming to another part of the mountainside. This was going to be difficult but it was the only thing I could do at this point. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a cave and desperately changed course. If I could make it there then maybe I could find a tighter space to hide in where I couldn't be reached. Just as I was about to get to the cave a rock moved under my boot and I fell on my face as pain shot up my leg. Likely a sprain. The thought actually made me laugh for a second, since my otherwise terrified brain had a moment outside of fear.

Rolling onto my back I looked up through the trees and was greeted with the sight of the moon. Wait... Why would I be able to see the moon? It's was practically mid day... That's when it hit me that it wasn't the moon that I was seeing. It was the thing...

"Found you" was the last thing I was able to comprehend as I blacked out.
