We are GLSEN Tennessee’s Shine Team, a group of queer and trans teenagers, and we need your help. To honor this year’s day of silence we are creating a zine (a DIY magazine) to give a space for youth to speak out against homophobia, transphobia, and racism. Our theme is “50 Years From Stonewall.” Stonewall was the first riot led primarily by trans women of color protesting the violence they had been facing, and still continue to face, from police officers. Stonewall was also the cornerstone for the LGBT+ movement gaining nationwide attention for the first time. We are looking for works of art such as poems, paintings, drawings, collages, song lyrics, photographs, interviews, nail art, gardening, illusions, riddles, carpentry, fashion, plays, opinion pieces, manifestos, screenshots, and stories. Anything works! The zine will be presented at a break the silence event in April (more details will be provided closer to date). Anyone is welcome to submit although submissions from trans people, people of color, those with disabilities, and other marginalized groups are highly encouraged. Keep in mind the age range is roughly 10-25 year olds so submissions are encouraged to be kept PG and include content warnings if necessary. We do not intend on censoring the conversation, we are simply making sure it is appropriate. Please add any information you would like to be included in the final production (name, age, pronouns, location, etc) The deadline for submissions is February 16. Submissions should be sent to glsenshineteamtennessee@gmail.com. Questions or concerns can be sent to this glsenshineteamtennessee@gmail.com.
