you know you're an og x-files fic fan:

If any of the following applied to you in the 1990s:

  • You waited breathlessly for a new Gossamer update.
  • You remember the shippers vs. noromos flamewars on alt.tv.xfiles.creative.
  • The following inital salad means something to you: MSR VRA.
  • You wrote your Mulder/Krycek slash under another pen name because oh, the shame.
  • You lived for the satellite wild feed spoilers posted on Sunday mornings.
  • You remember when Amy was the owner of the Haven and that it used to host fic recs.
  • Your personal sign of “making it” was having Shari and Kris interview you for Chronicle X.
  • You belonged to at least four fic-related mailing lists, like Scullyfic, XAPEN, XF Romantics, RatTales or XFC.
  • You belonged to a “secret” mailing list of your friends to bitch about everyone else.
  • You took the Spooky Awards SUPER SERIOUSLY.
  • You remember when men, at least six of them, wrote fanfic.
  • You knew the big secret of the identity of Anubis.
  • You stayed up all night to read the latest book of Iolokus.
  • You measured the length of your fanfic in byte size, not word count.
  • You remember the giant, sprawling wank about the Wicked Witches and Yes Virginia.
  • You called in sick at work/skipped school to finish your WIP.
  • You emailed feedback to writers.
  • You thought that 70 character limit text files were the only way to read fanfic.
  • You hung out in the AOL fanfic junkies folder because all your favorite authors were there.
  • You read everything Erin Blair ever wrote because hilarious.
  • You had AOL, period.
  • You wrote fanfic using your real name.
  • You used at least three beta readers per fic.
  • You were either are “Scullyist” or a “Mulderist.” Accordingly, you belonged to OBSSE or the Fox Mulder Estrogen Brigade.
  • You loved trying to figure out the blind gossip items in CiCi Lean’s newsletter.
  • You took everything, especially yourself, too seriously.

Have anything to add to the list?

I can’t believe this post was from 2015 and nearly a decade later here I am back reading X-Files fanfic and rewatching the damn show. Again.

when someone is a christian they are not constantly asked their position on the holocaust the transatlantic slave trade the extermination of native americans or any of the thousands of atrocities committed by christians so why do muslims get asked about terrorism and jewish people about israel and are grouped in with specific bad people while christians are not required to explain themselves??

goyim and non muslims can and should reblog

[christians and all sectors of christianity that means you]

Episode 172: Safe Spaces

Episode 172, “Safe Spaces,” is split into two parts: first, Flourish and Elizabeth read and respond to a series of listener letters about their recent “Fandom-Tinted Glasses” conversation; then, they discuss another listener letter on younger fans’ struggles to avoid or escape “anti” or “purity culture” dynamics. In increasingly fractured—and increasingly hostile—digital spaces, is it possible to create fandom environments that allow us to truly protect ourselves?

Are you the Flourish of the old Fictionalley days?

Yes, I sure am. (Sorry it took awhile to respond to this! I'm mostly over on Twitter now.)

Anonymous asked:

How would you say fandom culture has changed over the years? What are some differences you notice between older and younger fandom folks?

I’ve been thinking for a while about how to answer this, and I’m not sure I have a really good answer, but I’m going to try.

This is SO accurate to me. We had different experiences in Ye Olde Fandom, obviously, and I haven't been in it quite as long, but in essence it is extremely correct.

Bones getting frustrated about the paucity of Vulcan medical information being made available to him and assuming it’s because Vulcans are super insular and secretive about their medical information, when it turns out that your average Vulcan just has no idea how many body parts they even have

Does anybody else h/c that this isn’t necessarily a Vulcan thing but a Sarek thing? Like poor child Spock got the absolute minimum info from his dad about how his Vulcan anatomy works and just kinda had to read about it in textbooks and smutty Vulcan dime store novels?

I think Voyager more or less confirms this in that Vorik is 110% better-adjusted about pon farr than Spock is. Also, Sarek is canonically Mr. Bad at Being a Dad, so h/c accepted

HELLO here is the Tumblr article I’ve been talking about for the past month! It’s done it’s here and it’s FOR YOU, yes YOU still hanging out on this beautiful terrible horrible wonderful website!

Featuring quotes from  @tragedycamp and @benepla, anecdotal data from the informal polls I conducted on here a while back, and lots of speculating on Why Is This Site Different Than All Other Sites?

More than anything else, Tumblr in 2020 is a self-sustaining ecosystem. It’s a semi-sealed and increasingly fertile terrarium, a nigh-impossible perpetual-motion machine of a platform going productively psychotic in its isolation.

Allegra is a WONDERFUL writer and was also WONDERFUL to edit!! <3 (And here’s to continuing to spend time on this WONDERFUL hellsite that I love.)

seconded (although by “seconded” I mean “here’s to maybe coming back to tumblr, which I never loved as much as elizabeth, but hey, I keep remembering the good parts of it lately”)
