What they mean: Jonathan Larson died before Rent’s official opening night and died the night of the first preview. Just hours before his death he was so excited and was being interviewed at the stage door. Also his parents were supposed to watch the second preview and they still came even though he died the night before. And he never got to see how big Rent became
