YOU'RE WEIRD. I LIKE YOU. I fangirl over people I've never met and care more about fictional characters than most real people. I also write stories. Find me at Joshifer4Everlark on FF&AO3.

Don’t Add Fanfiction To Your Goodreads Shelf

Hi folks, I know some of you like to use Goodreads to track all your reading and don’t want to distinguish between books and fanfiction.

I am, however, begging you not to do this. It is extremely jarring and disconcerting to be a fic author and find your works somewhere in the wild where you did not personally put them. Fics are not books, are not published in the same way as books, and exist in a precarious legal space.

Please don’t attempt to elide the separation that exists between fandom and the world of official publishing.

update to add: for those folks learning about this for the first time and freaking out, I did a reblog of this with guidelines about how to get your fic taken down!

I totally understand and respect this. I had not done it before anway, but definitely never will now…

However, does anyone know if there is a similar site LIKE goodreads (that obviously isn’t goodreads) where you can track hours/total word counts that you’ve read/how many works you’ve finished?

Is it just something you’d have to keep track of on your own in like, an excel? Cuz I’m bad at computers.

Also. If so, how do you do it and can it be private?

For… reasons 😉

Pitch Perfect Fandom Stats

A visualization of how fics are tagged in the Pitch Perfect fandom on ao3.

Data from ao3 as at December 25, 2023 (Note 3).

Pitch Perfect Stats

Percentages are of the total number of fics in the Pitch Perfect fandom tag.

Total number of fics: 7,745

Specific Relationship Comparisons

Chloe/Beca: 5,153 fics

Stacie/Aubrey: 881 fics

Emily/Beca: 297 fics

The gray bar for Pitch Perfect is what that tag percentage is in the fandom as a whole.

Notes and Disclaimers

*Note 1: (Warnings) Graphic Depictions of Violence, Major Character Death, Underage, and Rape/ Non-Con were combined for visibility.

**Note 2: (Categories) F/F excluded for visibility. F/F percentage of the Pitch Perfect fandom tag was 92.8%.

Note 3: I don't use any programs to gather stats (I input data manually). So, some fics may have been deleted or created and backdated since. To minimize discrepancies, I tried to collect all the data in one sitting.

Note 4: I know tag wrangling is a thing however, I don't know much about it. That being said, I'm pretty sure that this data doesn't really take that into consideration.

Note 5: I am obviously an amateur (I failed my first year stats exam lol), so take that as you will.

Note 6: If you use this data for anything, please let me know and tag me in it. If you want the original excel file, just ask and I'll send it to you.

Wow. This is insane. I love seeing stats like this.

I feel like I should start a good reads type of log but for all the fanfictions I read.

**I KNOW NOT TO PUT FANFICS ON GOODREADS BUT ALSO LIKE… I’M NOT STUPID. I DO NOT WANT EVERYONE KNOWING WHAT KIND OF THINGS I READ ANYWAY. 🙃

Time to feed unprofessional managers what they’ve been dishing out for far too long.

Couple things here, for when you do this to people:

1. if you get the “answer my call” text, NEVER ANSWER THE CALL

They are calling you because they want to have the conversation verbally, and be able to lie later about what they said or didn’t say. Force them to continue via text or email- force them to continue the conversation in writing or not at all.

2. “Lack of 2 weeks notice is unprofessional!” or the other version, “Not providing notice is illegal!”

No it isn’t. Neither is true.

And in the US, all states except Montana are “at will” employment (though you may hear an employer refer to it as “right to work” to make it sound better, it’s the same thing). Sure, at-will employment means they can fire you without cause, BUT! It also means that you are not legally required to give a reason for quitting, or to give notice of any kind.

Is it polite to give notice when you can? Sure. Do bosses expect it? Absolutely. But that does not make you legally required to provide it.

3. The only thing I would change in the worker’s interaction here was their response when initially asked to come in.

Employee: “Hey Mark. Sorry I’m unable to cover the shift tonight because I’m studying for my exam tomorrow.”

Don’t give a reason for your lack of availability. It may be tempting to. You may feel rude if you don’t.

DON’T DO IT.

You do not owe your boss any information about what you do off the clock, and any reason you give will only ever be used against you.

Boss: “Hey I need you to cover Jasper’s shift tonight.”
Employee: “Sorry, I’m not available.”

And leave it at that.

Do not elaborate.

Do not offer additional information.

When you boss asks you to elaborate, because they will, be polite but firm. “With respect, that’s personal. I’m sorry, but I’m unavailable to cover this shift/work late/come in early/etc.”

Be a broken record- you’re unavailable. That’s the only information they need to know, and it’s the only information they have a LEGAL RIGHT to know.

Please stop giving your bosses information they don’t need to know and don’t get to have, because they’re only going to try and use it to fuck you over later.

My job is HR. The above is completely accurate.

Ok but why do I wanna murder her ex boyfriend for doing this to her?!!!

Anna Kendrick dug deep for her heart-wrenching performance in Alice, Darling, which world premieres Sunday at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In the moving drama, directed by Mary Nighy and written by Alanna Francis, the Oscar nominee, 37, plays Alice, a woman stuck in an emotionally abusive relationship to her successful boyfriend, Simon (Charlie Carrick). To her friends, played by Kaniehtiio Horn and Wunmi Mosaku, Alice seems distressingly distant during a birthday trip. As Alice slowly unravels as a result of the mind games Simon has played on her, her friends try to intervene and help.

As Kendrick tells PEOPLE, Alice's story "resonated" with her for a specific reason.

"I was coming out of a personal experience with emotional abuse and psychological abuse," she shares, recalling the time she first came across the screenplay. "I think my rep sent it to me, because he knew what I'd been dealing with and sent it along. Because he was like, 'This sort of speaks to everything that you've been talking to me about.' "

"It felt really distinct in that I had, frankly, seen a lot of movies about abusive or toxic relationships, and it didn't really look like what was happening to me," she adds. "It kind of helped me normalize and minimize what was happening to me, because I thought, 'Well, if I was in an abusive relationship, it would look like that.' "

Describing her former relationship, Kendrick shares, "I was in a situation where I loved and trusted this person more than I trusted myself. So when that person is telling you that you have a distorted sense of reality and that you are impossible and that all the stuff that you think is going on is not going on, your life gets really confusing really quickly. And I was in a situation where, at the end, I had the unique experience of finding out that everything I thought was going on was in fact going on. So I had this kind of springboard for feeling and recovery that a lot of people don't get."

Kendrick describes later parsing out "what really happened" in her relationship" as "the hardest task of my adult life." (The actress declined to name her former boyfriend.)

"My body still believes that it was my fault," she says. "So even with this concrete jumping off point for me, to walk out of that relationship knowing that I wasn't crazy, it's incredible the way that recovery has been so challenging."

For Kendrick, Alice, Darling marks the first time she's taken on a project so relevant to her.

"Usually, it's just I read a good script and I like the people involved, and I make the movie," she says. "And it was really surprising timing that we found this script at that moment in my life. And in fact, I remember my first Zoom meeting with Mary Nighy, the director, disclosing to her what I was going through. And I even said to her, 'This all happened very recently. In fact, it happened so recently that if the movie was shooting in a month, I probably shouldn't do it.' But it was many, many months away. So I wasn't in danger of re-traumatizing myself. But yeah, it's certainly a unique experience."

Kendrick acknowledges that given her personal ties to the themes of Alice, Darling, the making of the film "felt incredibly cathartic."

"But like so many things in life," she adds, "I think the piece that was most therapeutic was actually building relationships with these collaborators and sharing our personal histories with each other, and then creating this thing together.”

i see the younglings post things like "are you still on tumblr at 30?" and "go take care of your kids instead of reading fics"

and i just feel sad

because you have a bunch of young people who are terrified of getting older.

they think age is going to change them, into something boring, something different, something grey.

and i just want to tell them, reassure them:

you will still be the same person.

isn't it wonderful?

you will love the things you love for so many years. you will find joy in the same things, decade after decade. you will feel the same inside, through all this time.

yes, the body will change. yes there's more responsibilities, less time, even less energy.

but there's no magical age where you stop enjoying that specific story, that specific game, that specific hobby.

but you know what also comes with age?

you have less fucks to give.

Your prompt, should you choose to accept it, is a meet cute (possibly a bit of clueless flirting that leads to a date and/or kiss?) where Chloe is a librarian and Beca is a grumpy archeology grad student who only likes people if they've been dead for at least 800 years.

Ooooh. Okay. I will have to do some research but this could be fun!

Thinking of starting back up writing some pitch perfect fan fiction again. But also. Like. One of the old stories I wrote I don’t wanna/still can’t continue right now cuz I can’t figure out how to end it and at the time that lead to a HUGE spiral and ultimately a long period away from writing. But I wanna get back in to it. So I guess. Like. How?! Send me prompts or tag me in shit so I do it.

I did it. I posted it before I chickened out so it’s probably full of mistakes and also probably sucks cuz I haven’t written in over 2 years, but it’s out there.

Could someone please make my anxiety go away and read it and let me know I didn’t just ruin my life and need to move to Canada?

Thank god none of my IRL friends know I write lesbian FanFiction or I’d REALLY have to move.
