So this is something that some people have noticed, and I’ve noticed it too in Episode 12 of Free! This has to deal with Nitori and the small details I’ve noticed about when Rin was yelling at him. First off, like a few people have pointed out, Nitori actually throws his arms up in defense when Rin is yelling at him. The thing that gets me about this is that Nitori throws his arms up when he (and even I) thought Rin was going to actually hit him. When Rin stood up quickly on the bus, when he punched the window, and when he kicked over the trashcan, Nitori went straight to defending himself.

The really really sketchy frame up there of Rin when he’s about to punch the window (I seriously couldn’t get a good enough frame because of how fast it moves) You can see Nitori’s arms moving to go up in defense, because from this point of view, if I hadn’t seen this episode, I’d think Rin was aiming to back hand Nitori. On the bus Rin gets up quickly as if he’s going to go at Nitori and hurt him, even though he just walks away Nitori is braced to get hit, and when he punts that trashcan down the hall, depending on what angle you look at in the different frames, Rin could be attacking Nitori. And also, the whole time Rin was yelling at him, Nitori looked really scared in some parts, like, super scared.

Something that also gets me about this is what Rin does. Rin just about got into a fist fight with Rei in episode 11, and he actually threw a punch at Haru in 12, not to mention they wrestled on the ground for a good amount of time. Rin had no problem with grabbing Rei by the collar and attacking Haru, but with Nitori, you can clearly see him showing restraint. He hits stuff around him instead of going at Nitori. He avoids hitting him at pretty much all costs.

And another thing about Rin, after his confrontation with Rei, and after he attacked Haru, we don’t see him make any move to apologize to them at all. Nothing. But later when Rin is talking to Seijuro, he apologizes to Nitori for just /yelling/ at him. And Rin looks genuinely upset with himself that he yelled at Nitori. I think for the few people that think about it being Rin that hits Nitori, I beg to differ because of how ashamed Rin looks in that scene. I think that Rin would never ever lay a hand on Nitori if he’s that upset just over yelling at him.

And also, if at this point you’re thinking that pretty much anyone would defend themselves like that, I have something else to say. In my family, my parents and I frequently fight to play with each other, which means we playfully hit each other a lot and we NEVER intend to hurt one another. The thing about this is, whenever someone makes a move towards me, even if they don’t aim at me, I seriously flinch. I sometimes put a hand up in defense because I genuinely think someone is going to swat at me or hit me as play, which I don’t mind because I’ll do it right back. If I was in the same position, I’d flinch, anyone would, but Nitori braced himself to get hurt. It means he has reason to brace himself when Rin makes any moves. So when I see Nitori putting his arms up and shielding his face, it means he /SERIOUSLY/ expects that Rin might hit him.

While this stuff might never actually be true, I consider it a serious possibility because of everything that happens in that episode. And if Nitori gets a story in the second season, and something like this actually ends up being a part of his backstory, I will seriously cry, because Nitori is just too sweet for me to handle something bad like that happening to him.

*EDIT*

Whoa hey so I totally got some new evidence for this due to our lovely new season. Episode 7 set off the Nitori Abuse Radar, strap in guys I got even more arguments here. Okay here we go friends.

As I explained in my previous writings, Nitori has a habit of throwing his arms up when he suspects violence is about to occur wether he’s going for self defense or to calm someone else down. Rin only snapped at Sousuke, so why did Nitori think they were going to get into a fight? (Granted they did later but Nitori probably doesn’t know that) The mere /thought/ that Rin was going to get into a fight was enough to set Nitori off as seen here:

Little Nitori straight up like asks Rin not to fight. I guess yeah there’s school rules against fighting and shit like that but like, no one else is in that area as far as the screen allows us to see, so why would it matter? Because Nitori is set off by yelling and doesn’t like confrontations. I’m guessing parents who yell at each other and Nitori a lot, or maybe an abuser from school or somewhere else. Clearly snapping/yelling=fight in his mindset which is why he asks Rin to stop. But then there’s Rin’s response:

He knows? What does Rin know? I find it kind of hard to believe that he would say “I know” about school rules. Everyone knows, there’s no need to state it. And Nitori didn’t say “Don’t fight here” he said don’t fight. “Don’t fight in front of me”, is probably what he meant and Rin by this point probably knows that Nitori can’t handle things like this. Rin knows that Nitori has been abused and because Rin is protective as fuck over his friends he probably put an end to his abuser or if it was parents, it just stopped for other reasons, OR Nitori continues to be abused when he goes home so he chooses to not go home often, who knows? I’m just here to prove the point, not get into details. But Rin knows that Nitori is uncomfortable during fights, therefore:

Rin tells Sousuke to go with him someplace else. They didn’t take Nitori with them, so they either left him in the gym or took him back to his room before going outside. Why didn’t they take Nitori? If they were just leaving the building because of the school rules, Nitori probably could have just tagged along anyways, but maybe Rin knew his problems with abuse, and decided he didn’t need to be there? Or he knew Nitori’s problem and decided to keep him as far away from this as possible.

However, the most likely thing is that Rin as a captain probably knew this was going to be personal so clearly no one else needed to tag along. That’s the easy answer, but they did relocate after Nitori’s outburst with absolutely no mention of the school or any rules about fighting.

Nitori said stop so Rin took it somewhere else. Interesting? Anyone?
