Morning Rituals

As part of my "Year of Healing" (yes, I guess I am calling it that), I've started to add some rituals into my mornings. To be honest, Jason and I are night owls. We just are. Unless I have an exact place to be early, we stay up late. I don't know how it happens but it does. I could have the best intentions of going to bed before midnight, and the next thing I know...it's 2am. AGAIN. That's just the way it is. One of our plans for the year is going to bed earlier, and rising earlier.  Instead of dragging myself out of bed, pouring a cup of strong coffee (coffee is still part of my ritual, lets be real) and sitting back down to get sucked into damn Instagram; I've begun adding the following to my mornings. I can't always do all of them but I try...I try.

1. Oil Pulling- The very first thing I do in the morning. Even before I put in my contacts, I put a spoon of coconut oil into my mouth and swish for 20 minutes. While I'm swishing I heat up hot water for my lemon-cayenne drink and make a french press of coffee, clean up the house, etc. Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic practice that is supposed to detoxify teeth and gums. It increases oral heath, whitens teeth, and freshens breath. Some claim it increase energy, clears skin, and helps with hangovers but I just like the way it makes my mouth feel after.

2. Warm lemon-cayenne water- After I've oil pulled, brushed my teeth and drank a large glass of water...I have a cup of warm lemon and cayenne water. Another detoxifier, this mix stimulates the liver, gets your digestive system and metabolism going and alkalines the body.

3. Break a sweat- Instead of jumping on the computer and checking emails right away, I try to workout at least for 30 minutes. If I have enough time I will get a really good hour/hour and a half workout in but if I'm rushed I try to run for 30 minutes. I really like to get a run in if I have a shoot or casting, not only does it wake me up but it's get the blood going and I feel like my complexion looks so much better. I look alive! Add some stretching or a few yoga moves after and I'm good to go.

4. Meditation- I mentioned this in my 'New year, New rules' post. I don't know why it's so hard for me to sit and be still for 10 minutes in the morning but it is. Probably because I have so many things on my mind, so sometimes I wait to meditate later in the day. But if I do manage to do it it first thing, I feel like it really clears my head and gets me centered and prepared for the rest of the day.

5. Green juice- Before I eat breakfast I make a green juice with cucumber, celery, parsley, apple, kale or spinach and lemon. I like knowing that I'm giving my body and healthy dose of vitamins and a few servings of vegetables. Plus, it also helps gets my pH back on the alkaline side.

6. Dry Brushing- Right before I jump into the shower I dry brush. Dry brushing increases circulation, stimulates the lymphatic system, and exfoliates the skin...and it's supposed to help diminish the appearance of cellulite. Good enough reason for me. You simply use a body brush and make strokes up the body (always toward the heart) starting at your feet. It probably takes me 2 minutes max. Then I jump in the shower and am ready to face the day.

And that's what I've been doing. Ideally, I'd like my rituals to take an hour, but if I have extra time in the morning it's nice to stretch everything out and really enjoy preparing myself for the rest of the day.

New Year, New Rules

Ahhhh, the glitter and confetti have settled and now it's time to get back to "reality.". I love the holiday season and all the lovely traditions Jason and my family have, but afters weeks of celebrating (AKA partying) my body and brain were starting to get pretty exhausted. Last week I was thinking 'God, let's just get through New Year's so I can get back on a normal schedule.' I kinda felt like I was in limbo, ya know? Anyways, it's the beginning of January and hopefully everyone is feeling fresh and excited about the year ahead. For some reason I am feeling it more than usual this year. Last year was good and all but there were a few moments where I realized I need to make some improvements in my life. Maybe I'm growing up. Shocker.

So, instead of resolutions I am thinking of this year as a year of healing. Not healing from anything exactly, but doing whatever I need to do to help myself be whole, and feel the best I can possibly feel. My body, my mind, my budget. Ha. Anything and everything. I think it's gonna be pretty enjoyable. Here are a few things I'm gonna work on, very basic (not that kind of basic) but it's a start. One for the body, one for the mind, and one for the budget.

1. Working it out- This has got to be the most popular resolution. I am very into working out, it makes me feel sooo much better...I'm always happier and feel much more balanced when I am on a workout schedule. Not to mention my clothes fit better and my skin glows. So my goal this year is to make sure that schedule sticks...because, yes, there were weeks where I was just "too busy" to take time to do it (I probably wasn't too busy). Next thing I knew my skin had a grey tone to it and getting through a 30 minute run was torture...not happening anymore. There are so many benefits of breaking a sweat, read this. I'll be working on the Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide. I started last summer, and I gotta say I was feeling damn good. So now I'm on a mission to finish the three months. I kinda curious to see how strong I can possibly get. Plus yoga. I am definitely starting yoga.

2. Meditation- I've started the Headspace app this week. With all the amazing benefits of meditation, how could I not start? (Wait, I have. Every time Deepak and Oprah come out with a new challenge that I eventually end up failing!!! Oh those two). But really, the next time I'm over at my voice lesson in Mt. Washington I am going to take 20 minutes or so over at the Self-Realization Fellowship and just be.

3. Budgeting- Jason and I have got plans for this this year so we are in the process of really saving up our money. We realized the we spend too much money on food and entertainment. It's easy to go out and spend way to much on drinks, and it also easy to run out to Whole Foods and spend wayyyy too much money on snacks (you know what I mean). So this year we are cutting back...which means a lot more cooking at home (new to me) and finding fun, low cost nights out on the town...which I may or may not be sharing once a month on here. Stay tuned. And the Happiest New Year to YOU!

For Love and Lemons- Sleeping In With

For Love and Lemons asked Jason and I to be a part of their "Sleeping In With" series...featuring their super hot Skivvies and cozy Knitz while lounging around the house on a lazy weekend. We shot it all around our house in Laurel Canyon...drinking coffee, laying around listening to music and tending to the plants on the deck. Check out the photos below, and click on the link to read our interview as well.

ladyBOY

I've always been influenced by what the boys wear. Yes, I may be somewhat of a girly girl when you actually talk to me (or so I've been told) and I do love a beautiful dress, some hot heels or a little miniskirt, but boys can dress so cool.. so easily. When I was around 16 I went through phase where I wore baggy pants and shorts, skate shoes and a t-shirt all the time. It didn't last that long, but since then I've always incorporated menswear pieces into my style. An oversized motorcycle jacket, rad trousers, some bad ass boots or creepers. And I am ALWAYS stealing from Jason. There are so many of his holey t-shirts and denim jackets that will never see the side of his closet again. So when my friend Tara Nichols asked to style and shoot me for her blog The LadyBOY Project,of course I was in. Tara headed over to my place last Sunday and styled me in suits by Jenni Kayne (hello pink suit) and some amazing hats by Gladys Tamez Millinery. Tara has always been a pro at mixing prints, and this time was no exception. Check out the photos and video taken around my porch of me somewhat being a boy (a sassy boy for sure) below. diggin' it

Hurt my eye this weekend so I'm stuck inside for a few days trying to watch movies, reading self-help books (ha, but really), planning my Halloween costume and drinking lots of tea. Also spending some time on Pinterest (which all the photos are from) so here's a little of what I'm digging this month...

1. Pastel fur

2. Midi skirt- ideally a metallic midi skirt and paired with a crop

3. Over the knee boots- Usually go for ankle boots but I'm loving this over the knee-cut-off combo.

4. French braid pigtails- Ugh, if only my hair was longer!

5. Little black collared dresses. This one is from L'Ecole Des Femmes

6. Mod. Anything but ideally a little plaid mini paired with knee socks and a riding cap.

On the Way Out x The Well

Recently I ventured over to downtown to visit the cool kids at The Well. They treated me to a conditioning treatment and blowout at their salon which left my hair looking the healthiest it's looked in awhile. I got to pick out some of my favorite pieces that they currently have in-store and put together a few looks to shoot in their studio. Such a fun day, definitely have to get back over there the next time they have one of their epic nighttime events. Below is my style profile interview and the photos and video.

STYLE PROFILE: Jenny Parry, On the Way Out

We had the pleasure of hosting Jenny Parry of On The Way Out in our space the other day.  She is our definition of a Southern California Bombshell: Fun, Beautiful, AND Stylish.

If you haven’t yet, check out her blog: www.onthe-wayout.com .

The Well: Can you tell us a little about yourself and your story?

Jenny Parry: I am a model/actress/fashion blogger born and raised in Southern California. I currently live in Laurel Canyon with my photographer husband and sheltie named Leon. I studied fashion in college but once I graduated I moved to LA and started modeling. I started On the Way Out about a year and a half ago and used it as a creative outlet, and as a way to share my love of fashion.

TW: What is the inspiration behind your blog?

JP: I’ve always enjoyed putting looks together so starting my style blog was bound to eventually happen. My blog is basically what I am into at the moment…whether it’s what I’m wearing, what beauty product I’m using or what I’m doing in my day to day life. It’s just whatever makes me, me.

The Well: Why did you name it On the Way Out?

JP: When I started the blog, we were going to shoot my look each day as I am on my way out the door…that’s why I named it On the Way Out. But lets be honest, it was kind of impossible when I’m running late and rushing out the door. But On the Way Out stuck…so I could be ‘on the way out’ of anywhere now.

TW: What is a typical day like for you?

JP: Everyday is so different for me…but it always involves strong coffee first thing in the morning. I usually work out, go to castings or meetings, work on the blog online and answer emails, and shoot new looks with my husband, but not necessarily in that order. Then dinner with my man, and then maybe go out and if we aren’t feeling it then a movie.

TW: Do you have any go-to beauty tips?

JP: I feel like if you are taking care of yourself on the inside, it shows on the outside. So I try to drink lots of water, have a green juice everyday and eat lots of vegetables. I moisturize like crazy and love the Aztec Secret Healing Clay mask. Mix that with apple cider vinegar once a week and my skin looks years younger.

TW: Who are your current favorite music artists?

JP: I’ve been listening to Temples, Blood Orange, and The War on Drugs

Featuring pieces by Again and Henrik Vibskov available at The Well

So it's SUPPOSED to be the end of summer...here in LA it's been 100 degrees for the past couple of days so it doesn't seem like it's ending anytime soon and my hair and skin have definitely been feeling it. After all the sun and salt water drying it out I've turned to a few beauty products to get me back into shape and ready for fall...

Hair

Olaplex- My colorist Colette at Proper Hair in Costa Mesa used this bond multiplier the last time I saw her to bleach my hair. It prevents breakage which is awesome since I am (still) attempting to grow my hair out.

Oribe Gold Lust line-To intensely hydrate and strengthen, get my hair looking shiny not dull and fried out...ugh, the problems of a bleach blonde

Vida Glow-This goes under skin as well, it's a 100% natural marine collagen supplement in powder form. Helps replenish collagen levels to aid in anti-aging meaning less wrinkles and longer and thicker hair. Just started adding it to my diet so we shall see.

Coconut Oil-Same with this one too for skin...I soak my hair in coconut oil (I just usually use an organic one from Trader Joe's) for about an hour or two and then wash and condition as usual. I also use it as a body lotion after I shower... helps super hydrate the hair and gives skin a glow.

Skin

b.right! Radiant Skincare by Benefit- I bought the starter kit last month when I flew to New York and my skin loves this collection! Especially love the Total Moisture Facial Cream and It's Potent! Eye Cream. Good stuff.

Aztec Indian Healing Clay-This mask is amazing...I use it about once a week mixed with apple cider vinegar and I swear it makes your skin look a couple years younger. I get mine at Whole Food's or any natural food store.

Body

Frank Coffee Scrub-This stuff is great for making your skin as soft as soft can be...it also helps with cellulite and stretch marks which rules. Follow with coconut oil and your skin with be looking flawless.

Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of walking the runway for Sahara Ray Swim at Warwick LA. Such a fun night hanging out with such awesome girls. And the suits! So very hot...between the off the shoulder tops, teeny tiny bikinis, and the low-cut/high-cut one-pieces I'm not sure which is my fave. Wanted to share some pics backstage before the show and a couple after when we let loose.

Jumpsuit- Flynn Skye, Shoes- Converse, Denim Jacket- Vintage via Reissued

Been spending the last two weeks enjoying the end of August down in Newport Beach working on my tan and running along the beach everyday. I love the last bits of summer...and getting ready to get back into gear for September. Hoping to get a camping trip/road trip/Palm Springs trip in the next couple of weeks...ideally all three.

Dress- DAWN, Sneakers- Converse, Sunglasses- dblanc

Jason has been in New York working for the past couple of weeks so I jumped on a plane and week and a half ago to celebrate his birthday (and my cousin's whose birthday is two days later, and who is out there assisting Jason). I know it's hot, I know it's humid but I love New York in the summer so I had to come out there. We stayed with our friend in his rad little spot in Williamsburg, and spent the weekend checking out museums, riding bikes through Central Park and, of course, grabbing drinks at all the amazing places you can grab a drink at. Unfortunately, I had to come back to LA, or else I'd still be there.

As for my lovely dress, every DAWN piece is made from deadstock fabric, and in limited quantities, which I love. Check out more of their gorgeous. vintage-inspired pieces at www.shopdawn.com
