“the body keeps the score” or my personal favorite, “the body is a fleshy calendar clock and worst/best keeper of time, alerting me early at the start of a month, ‘pssstt, hey you know those memories randomly creeping in? yeah, it’s because we’ve got trauma anniversaries forecasted for the next two weeks. just thought you should know. kgoodluckxoxo<3’”
finished Maggie Smith’s You Could Make This Place Beautiful and cannot stop thinking about its tenderness. as someone who is divorced, I expected her process through that to be the most hard-hitting (and it was incredibly impactful) but I think I was most touched by how deeply she cares about her kids, and I haven’t seen that personal side of mothering, or parenting at all, really. she doesn’t just love her kids, she so very much loves the people they are. she loves hearing their thoughts, watching their creations, being able to witness them exist and grow in the world.
in one particular section, she mentions her ex-husband didn’t ask for any of the kids’ things, like macaroni art on the fridge or drawings of the family, “things I would have run into a burning building for,” she says, which really got me. that love. that “I see you in everything you make” love. that “I want to protect and celebrate everything you are” love. that “this came from you, so I love it” love.

I don’t often comment on the *gestures to clusterfuck of chaotic world events* but never in my wildest childhood imagination would I have pictured that I would be in a position in adulthood to try to teach older family members and elders in the community that there are, in fact, not humanoid satanic lizard beings trying to invade the government and Hollywood.
